Vet Notes

  • Roosevelt (Race 1) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be 3/5 lame in its near foreleg. Mr Cummings was advised he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance before it’s next race.
  • Destiny’s Kiss (Race 6) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained a laceration of its off-fore heel.
  • Alward  ( Race 6) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed grade 1/5 lame in the offforeleg. Trainer representative Mr C Duckworth advised Stewards that Alward had pleased the stable leading into today’s race and had displayed no lameness issues. Mr C Duckworth was asked to provide a veterinary clearance before Alward would be permitted to start again.
  • Lucky Fish (Race 8) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be displaying the thumps.

Penalties & Fines

  • A Chau, rider of Green pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding AR137(a) in that he permitted his mount to shift in inside the 200m when not clear of Cyclonite resulting in Cyclonite losing its running and having to be steadied. A Chau’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Tuesday 15 May 2018 to expire on Wednesday 23 May 2018, on which day he can ride.
  • J Collett, rider of Gem Song pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 300m, he permitted his mount to shift out to the outside of Roosevelt where there was not sufficient room to do so, resulting in Gem Song making heavy contact with Knockout Girl which was taken from its rightful running and became unbalanced. J Collett’s license to ride was suspended for a period of to commence on Sunday 13 May and to expire Thursday 24 May, on which day he may ride.
  • R Hutchings was overweight and was fined $500 under AR120(b).
  • App B McDougall, rider of Maurus was fined $300 for using the whip on nine occasions prior to the 100m (four more than permitted) AR137A(5)(ii).

Summary of Races

RACE 1 – TAB Rewards Handicap 1100m

  • Gem Song – Shifted back in its across runners from its wide barrier after the start. In the early stages of the straight, hung in and proved difficult to shift to the outside of runners to secure clear running.
  • Roosevelt – Was bumped heavily on jumping by Brilliant Mind which began awkwardly and shifted out. Roosevelt then shifted out and made heavy contact with Impulsive Maneuver. T Angland) reported that the colt travelled keen in the run however was able to obtain cover behind the early leaders. He added that when he felt something was amiss with Roosevelt shortly after straightening, he did not continue to ride his mount out fully to the finish of the race. Trainer J Cummings stated that Roosevelt had pleased the stable following its two barrier trials. He added the colt has at times displayed a restricted natural gait however has not received any specific treatment in respect of this apart from an ongoing management regime and there were no issues that concerned him prior to running today. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be 3/5 lame in its near foreleg. Mr Cummings was advised he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance before it’s next race.
  • Cyclonite – Began awkwardly and then was bumped on jumping by Knockout Girl. As a result of this, Cyclonite was then taken towards the heels of Miss Invincible and was steadied. Raced keenly in the early stages. Leaving the 800m when racing in restricted room to the inside of Gem Song became unbalanced and lost ground. A Chau (Green) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding AR137(a) in that he permitted his mount to shift in inside the 200m when not clear of Cyclonite resulting in Cyclonite losing its running and having to be steadied. A Chau’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Tuesday 15 May 2018 to expire on Wednesday 23 May 2018, on which day he can ride.
  • River Bird – Began awkwardly. Near the 250m was steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of Knockout Girl.
  • Green – Raced wide and without cover throughout.
  • Knockout Girl – Raced keenly in the middle stages and for some distance near the 800m was restrained from the heels of Roosevelt. J Collett (Gem Song) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 300m, he permitted his mount to shift out to the outside of Roosevelt where there was not sufficient room to do so, resulting in Gem Song making heavy contact with Knockout Girl which was taken from its rightful running and became unbalanced. J Collett’s license to ride was suspended for a period of to commence on Sunday 13 May and to expire Thursday 24 May, on which day he may ride.

RACE 2 – #Theraces Handicap 1200m

  • Intuition – T Angland stated that with the gelding racing first up today it was unsuited by the fast early tempo. He said this resulted in him having to make an early run on the gelding to start to make ground on the leader prior to the home turn. He added that this resulted in the gelding’s condition giving out inside the 100m, and under all the circumstances he wasn’t too disappointed in the performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Regimen – Near the 800m shifted in, brushed the running rail and became unbalanced. Over the concluding stages when inclined to hang in under pressure had to be steadied from the heels of Sedition (A Hyeronimus) which shifted out when being corrected its rider. A Hyeronimus was advised to exercise more care. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Star Sensation – Rider K Jennings advised his intention was to take up a position behind the leaders, however, his mount jumped awkwardly which resulted in it losing ground. He said soon after the start Fox Swift, which began awkwardly, shifted in resulting in his mount being further hampered, and consequently, Star Sensation settled at the rear of the field.
  • Goldfinch – Throughout the early and middle stages raced keenly when its rider D Panya attempted to restrain her mount which resulted in Goldfinch establishing a sizable lead.
  • Sedition – In the early stages of the straight was inclined to lay in and prove difficult to ride.

RACE 3 – TAB.com.au Handicap 1800m

  • Joyfilly Ours – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Merovee – Raced in restricted room shortly after the start between Destiny’s Hero and Delfuego which shifted out. Raced wide and without cover until nearing the 1300m.
  • Primitivo – Slow to begin and was hampered shortly after the start when Augustus shifted in. In the straight laid in under pressure and inclined to shift ground in.
  • Augustus – As R Hutchings was overweight, permission was granted for A Hyeronimus to be substituted. R Hutchings was fined $500 under AR120(b). Was steadied and shifted back in and across runners from its wide barrier after the start. A Hyeronimus could offer no excuse for the horse’s failure to finish its race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainers Representative (Mr C Duckworth) expressed disappointment in the performance of Augustus and undertook to report on the progress and future plans for the horse in the days subsequent.
  • Destiny’s Hero – Was steadied and shifted back in and across runners after the start. In the early stages was inclined to race keenly.
  • Animalia – Approaching the 600m improved to the inside of Almightly Crown when there was a narrow run. A short distance later Animalia then had to be steadied when disappointed between Almighty Crown and Primitivo which shifted out slightly.
  • Highway – Near the 300m rider D Payna accidentally dropped her whip.

RACE 4 – Flexi 6 Membership Sprint 1100m

  • Magic Alibi – After beginning only fairly was steadied and shifted back into across runners after the start. In the early part of the straight was held up for clear running between Zonk and Bonita.
  • O’Rachael – Began awkwardly.
  • Miss Ballantine – Bumped on its hindquarter by Magic Alibi shortly after the start. Near the 350m was bumped by Epidemic when that runner shifted out to improve. Near the 200m was inconvenienced when steadied to the heels of Epidemic and shifted in.
  • Rebel Miss – Shifted back in across runners from its wide barrier after the start.
  • Epidemic – Shifted back in across runners from its wide barrier after the start. Raced keenly in the middle stages.

RACE 5 – TAB Highway Plate 1500m

  • Lawan – Raced wide and without cover throughout. Over-raced in the early stages.
  • Vega De Lago – Was steadied and shifted back in across runners from its wide barrier after the start.
  • Volpe - Approaching the 1200m had to be steadied when crowded by Mia’s Got Class, (J Innes Jr) shifted in when not clear. J Innes Jr was reprimanded and advised to make sure he was sufficiently clear when shifting ground.
  • Central Witness – Slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Subtle Winner – Approaching the 1400m blundered. J Ford explained that from as far out as the 800m the mare was under pressure and as a consequence, he did not fully test it in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr W Wilkes advised that the mare had travelled down from Taree yesterday but had not settled in well when it arrived. He said Subtle Winner was fractious and sweated up prior to the race, and this he believed was the reason for his disappointing performance. Mr W Wilkes advised he would return to the mare to country grade at its next race start. Stewards informed Mr W Wilkes he will be required to provide a veterinary clearance for the mare prior to its next race start.
  • Biodynamic – Slow to begin.
  • Valree – Slow to begin and lost ground (2L).
  •  Sugar Dance - Rider (T Wolfgram) advised that the gelding travelled comfortably outside the leader in the early stages, however, when he placed his mount under pressure in the straight, it was one-paced and was unable to quicken from that point. He added in his view, Sugar Dance would be best suited being stepped up in distance for its race start. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

RACE 6 – Lord Mayors Cup 2000m

  • Destiny’s Kiss – Slow to begin (2L). A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained a laceration of its off-fore heel.
  • Maurus – Was ridden along in the early stages, however, did not muster speed. App B McDougall was fined $300 for using the whip on nine occasions prior to the 100m (four more than permitted) AR137A(5)(ii).
  • Alward – Stewards acceded to a request from the Waller Stable to have (T Angland) ride the horse half a kilogram overweight when there was no other suitable rider available to ride the horse added its allotted weight. T Angland advised he was asked to position his horse in a slightly more forward position today and for this reason in the early stages was obliged to settle outside the early leader Ecuador. He added from the 1300m, his mount obtained cover behind Our Century where it travelled satisfactory from that point. He further added that after improving making the home turn Alward was somewhat disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed grade 1/5 lame in the offforeleg. Trainer representative Mr C Duckworth advised Stewards that Alward had pleased the stable leading into today’s race and had displayed no lameness issues. Mr C Duckworth was asked to provide a veterinary clearance before Alward would be permitted to start again.
  • Our Century – Raced wide and without cover until nearing the 1100m.
  • Nettoyer – Raced keenly in the early stages.
  • Sofin – Making the home turn and early part of the straights laid in. Near the 200m was steadied away from the heels of Maurus (App B McDougall) which shifted in when not clear. B McDougall was advised that he must straighten when his mount shifts ground.
  • Prince Coureuse – Raced wide and without cover from the 1100m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Stable representative Mr D Wilkes was interviewed relative to the number starts of Prince Coureuse had competed in (five race starts in the last 25 days). Stewards advised Mr D Wilkes that the gelding would not be permitted to start in a race for a 14-day period. Pre-race and post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

RACE 7 – Rygate Racecourse Design Handicap 1350m

  • Tougherthantherest – Ove the final 200m laid out under pressure and the concluding stages shifted out a number of horses resulting in its rider (L Magorrian) having to stop riding with the whip inside the 50m.
  • Sir Bacchus – Began awkwardly and shifted back in across runners after the start. Over-raced in the early and middle stages. J Ford stated that rather than taking a run to the inside of Harper’s Choice which was available to him, he elected to shift out with a view to following the favourite Serene Miss. He said that he was able to secure clear running at all stages in the straight and Sir Bacchus finished the race off reasonably well.
  • Bolero King – In the straight laid in under pressure and near the 150m shifted in towards the heels of Special Missile and was momentarily inconvenienced and steadied to avoid that runner’s heels which also shifted out marginally.
  • Veladero – Rider R Hutchings advised Stewards that Valedro was one-paced when he placed his mount under pressure in the straight, and in his opinion would benefit from a step up in distance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Harpers Choice - Slow to begin. Was crowded for room between Tougherthantherest and Veladero both which shifted ground. In the incident Tougherthantherest and Veladero made contact.

RACE 8 – Schweppes Handicap 1500m

  • Arancini – Slow to begin. Raced wide and without cover throughout.
  • Lucky Fish – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be displaying the thumps.
  • Kool Vinnie – Shifted back in across runners from its wide barrier after the start. When questioned regarding his riding in the straight, A Hyeronimus advised that after improving to the outside of Awoke on straightening, he identified a run develop between Lucky Fish and Arancini which he commenced to take. As he attempted to take this position, both runners shifted, which resulted in Kool Vinnie being disappointing for clear running and not being able to be tested over the final 300m. He further added that he was unable to shift to the outside of Arancini as he was positioned to the inside of the heels of that runner and consequently Kool Vinnie went to the line without being fully tested.
  • Taikomochi – Slow to begin.
  • Bastia – Slow to begin.
  • Awoke – Slow to begin and then shifted back in across runners after the startRider B Avdullo stated that after enjoying a comfortable run in the event the mare was disappointing in his failure to finish the race off. He said that in the straight the mare appeared reluctant to proceed to the outside of All Too Huiying when that runner shifted out. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer representative Mr C Duckworth undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of Awoke in the days subsequent.
  • Revolver – Began awkwardly. Shifted in at the start resulting in Solo Mission being steadied when crowded for room.
  • Fuel – When questioned regarding the gelding settling back in the field J Ford advised his instruction were to endeavour to take up a forward position but his mount was a little slow to begin. He added he initially remained racing wide outside Lucky Fish but when that runner did not shift across, he elected then to restrain his mount and come back so as to avoid being caught wide. He further added that he was oblliged to take up a position at the rear of the field as this was the only position he was able to obtain closer to the rail.

 RACE 9 – Ascot Restaurant Sprint 1200m

  • Bon Amis – Began awkwardly.
  • Mana – Shifted back in across runners from its wide barrier after the start.
  • Virgilio – Shifted back in across runners from its wide barrier after the start.
  • Pelorus Jack – After being slow to begin was crowded and was steadied away from the heels of Crafty Cop when Bon Amis was taken in by Medaille which made contact with that horse.
  • I Am Serious - Rider J Ford advised in his view that Crafty Cop established a sizable lead in the early and middle stages. I Am Serious was disadvantaged and under pressure as far out as the 700m. He added that in the straight, I Am Serious was one-paced and finished the race off only fairly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer representative Mr C Duckworth was asked to report back on the progress of I Am Serious subsequent to the race.
