A "sit and steer" job - Headwater was much too good in the Silver Slipper
Money talks. Any punter that backed Paceman or Ottoman ahead of yesterday's Silver Slipper was fretting when the horses hit the yard. The big bets poured in for the Hawkes trained colt Headwater, bringing him into a firm favourite at jump time.
The result? The big son of Exceed And Excel put the other two favourites in a world of hurt before kicking away with ease.
But it wasn't all happy endings for the Hawkes boys. Their boom sprinter Deep Field was taught a lesson by Lankan Rupee in the Lightning Stakes at Flemington after getting backed into favourite too.
With 'Lankan' rated within a length of the best sprinters in the world, the money for Deep Field was a very aggressive move.
Crowning the King
James Cummings knows he has a good horse, you can tell every time he talks about Hallowed Crown. His three-year-old colt is regally bred with the spirit of a street fighter. A potent mix.
He showed his heart in the Hobartville, picking himself up after a bumping duel with Panzer Division on the turn.
A cold Autumn for Snowden?
The Snowden team are training winners, but they would have loved a couple of their stables stars to do better in recent weeks.
Two-year-old Paceman joined Diamond Valores and Veloce Forte as classy horses that have misfired in recent days.
Shooting to Win was a close up fourth in the Hobartville. They just don't to be relying on one horse come carnival time.
Vandyke goes bush
At least the Snowden stables horse look good in the yard. David Vandyke's ponies are usually nervous wrecks pre-race and their on-track performances are way off course.
David had been getting his wins on the Country and Provincial circuit recently, until Anyaas got a victory at Canterbury last Friday night.
Lets hope he can get back on track to score that elusive Saturday win again soon.
Adopting the Cat
Wouldn't you just love one.
Catkins fits the definition of a "bonny mare" perfectly. Plucky Belle was home for all money and the tough grey just wouldn't lie down.
