- Orcein – From its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind barriers shortly after the start. Raced keenly in the middle stages.

He said when his mount commenced well he initially endeavoured to obtain cover but when the tempo was only moderate in the early stages his mount commenced to race keenly. He further added when it was apparent he was not going to be able to obtain cover he elected to allow Royal Celebration to take up a position outside the leader Mickey Blue Eyes near the 800m.

Rider B Ryan advised his instructions were to take up a forward position if his mount commenced well today. He said that Whiteley was slow to begin, failed to muster early pace despite his efforts to ride it along and settled at the rear of the field. He said that when the tempo appeared to steady leaving the 700m he elected to allow Whiteley to improve into the event from the 600m whereby his mount commenced to improve into the event strongly.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to have lost its off-hind plate and was slow to recover. He said for this reason he elected to shift one off to follow the favourite Vontaine as he was concerned I Am Kalani would commence to give ground soon after straightening. He further stated that near the 600m he was then obliged to shift three wide when Northern Lights improved to his outside to ensure he was able to secure clear running.

Trainer Mr B Cavanough confirmed the instructions issued.
