Race-by-Race Summary

RACE 1: TAB Place Multi Plate 1200m

  • Libidosun – rider J Collett was dislodged in the parade ring prior to the horses going onto the track. Libidosun was inspected by the Club's Veterinary Officer and passed fit to start. J Collett was examined by the Club's Medical Officer and passed fit to fulfil his riding engagements.
  • Sargent Doakes – jumped awkwardly and then hampered shortly after by Backstab, which shifted out. Rider C Reith reported the gelding failed to handle the heavy track conditions and attributed this to its disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Dark Steel – near the 800m was steadied when crowded between Sargent Doakes and Precocious, which shifted out when being steadied from the heels of Backstab.
  • Stalwart – when questioned regarding his riding, S Clipperton stated he had been instructed to ride the colt with cover and, from his wide barrier, elected to take up a trailing position at the rear of the field. When questioned as to his riding in the early part of the straight and the reason he remained racing on the back of Dark Steel for some distance, S Clipperton stated, having walked the track before the first, he had formed the view the going was better towards the outside and, although there was a tight run developing between Dark Steel and Precocious, he was reluctant to proceed into that run until it had fully developed so as to ensure his mount's momentum was not halted once he placed it under pressure. He added for this reason he remained racing on the back of Dark Steel and, after initially contemplating coming to the inside of that runner, he shifted to its outside when Dark Steel rolled in slightly. S Clipperton further added that, after obtaining clear running between Dark Steel and Precocious, his mount ran on strongly, however, its run peaked just inside the 100m. S Clipperton was advised that, whilst the Stewards believed there was some indecision in his riding at the top of the straight, it did not have a material effect on his finishing position.

RACE 2: All Too Hard @ Vinery Handicap 1400m

  • God's In Him – laid in under pressure over the final 150m.
  • Lunar Rise – rider J Collett was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using the whip in a forehand manner on six occasions prior to the 100m (one more than permitted).

RACE 3: tab.com.au Handicap 2600m

  • Shubawi – near the 1700m was crowded when Soviet Courage laid in away from Planet Purple.
  • Planet Purple – when questioned regarding the disappointing performance of the gelding, App. K Jennings stated, when caught wide in the early stages, he was required to make some use of his mount to take up a position outside the leader, Mister Impatience, however, his mount failed to travel at any stage of the race. He added that near the 900m, when Soviet Courage improved to his inside, he was unable to hold that horse from shifting off and, consequently was forced three deep from that point and then began to weaken noticeably. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have speedy cuts to the off-hind pastern and coronet. Trainer Mr K Parker stated that he had been pleased with the gelding since its last start in the Stayers Cup on 6 June 2015, however, in retrospect, the gelding may have raced flatly today, given it had overraced last start. Mr Parker advised that Planet Purple would now be spelled and undertook to report back if anything was amiss with the gelding subsequent to the race.
  • Mister Impatience – App. B Loy stated he was under no specific instructions, other than to take up a forward position on the gelding and, if the tempo was not strong, to assume the lead. He added that he was able to obtain slow early sectionals in the lead but, in retrospect, given the gelding was coming back from 3000m last start, he should have placed his mount under pressure sooner than he did on this occasion. However, Mister Impatience was still somewhat disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr R Hewitson expressed dissatisfaction with the ride of App. B Loy in that he was of the opinion App. Loy should have placed his mount under pressure sooner than he did, bearing in mind the gelding is a one-paced stayer. Mr Hewitson undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of Mister Impatience subsequent to the race.

RACE 4: McGrath Estate Agents Handicap 1300m

  • Sense And Reason – hampered on jumping by Mardi, which shifted in.
  • Caprossa - overraced in the early stages.
  • My Sabeel – App. K Jennings stated that the mare was a little fractious in the gates, but then failed to travel satisfactorily throughout the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed an abrasion over the near-side eye. Trainer Mr K Moses stated that My Sabeel had come to the end of its preparation and would most likely now leave his stable. Mr Moses undertook to report back on the future plans for the mare.

RACE 5: ATC Heritage Society 5th Anniversary Handicap 1400m

  • Tree Of Jesse – rider D Beasley stated that, when caught wide in the early stages, he was obliged to ride forward to take up a position outside the lead, however, his mount was under pressure from the 400m, where it failed to respond to his riding. He added over the final 200m Tree Of Jesse shortened its stride, particularly when it was a beaten horse on the Heavy (10) going. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mr J Cummings reported Tree Of Jesse had pleased in its work since returning from Queensland and indicated it had come to the end of its preparation and would now be spelled. He undertook to report back on the progress of the filly subsequent to the race.
  • Scratch Me Lucky – near the 1000m, when inclined to race keenly, was checked to avoid the heels of Disgraceful (C Reith). C Reith pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a). C Reith's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Thursday, 25 June 2015 and to expire on Friday, 3 July 2015, on which day he may ride. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Disgraceful – A post-race veterinary examination revealed an abrasion to the off-hind gaskin.

RACE 6: Winter Dash 1200m

  • See The World – lost its off-front plate during its preliminary and was replated behind the barriers.
  • Speedy Squib – after being crossed by Zaratone in the early stages, then commenced to overrace for some distance and refused to settle. Near the 600m, when inclined to lay out, shifted out towards Alias and blundered.
  • Zaratone – blundered near the 150m.
  • Wouldnt It Be Nice – rider T Huet stated that the gelding travelled comfortably in behind the leaders, but when it improved to the outside shortly after entering the straight disappointed in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer's representative Mr S Perry stated that, in his view, with the moderate tempo, the gelding raced too close and is better suited when able to be ridden quieter and saved up for one finishing effort. He added Wouldnt It Be Nice had pleased the stable since its last start win in the June Stakes and undertook to report back on the progress of the gelding subsequent to the race.

RACE 7: TAB Rewards Handicap 1000m

  • Miss Alibi - hampered shortly after the start when Aroused shifted out. Became unbalanced passing the 250m.
  • Kokomo – got its head up shortly after the start and ran out across Cosmic Cameo and lost ground.
  • One Direction - near the 250m, after being initially bumped on the hindquarter by Bonete, which shifted out marginally, One Direction reacted badly when it was turned inwards and then again made heavy contact with Bonete. The incident was exacerbated when Holder Sunset (J Collett) shifted in, which resulted in One Direction being badly buffeted between Bonete and Holder Sunset. In these incidents Bonete was crowded and taken in onto the hindquarter of Miss Alibi, which became unbalanced. J Collett was reprimanded and advised in similar circumstances he must stop riding and straighten his mount sooner than he did on this occasion.
  • Bonete - crowded at the 250m.

RACE 8: Ranvet Handicap 1600m

  • Ghost Protocol – crowded at the start by Pajaro, which was taken out by Vergara.
  • Pajaro – crowded at the start.
  • Georgey Aeroplane – for some distance near the 600m raced tight to the inside of Hollywood Bound.
  • Keep Cool – raced in restricted room between Laurie's Love and Magic Hurricane making the home turn. Hampered at the 300m when bumped by Casino Dancer, which shifted to the outside of Laurie's Love to continue into clear running.
  • Role Model – rider D Beasley stated, whilst his mount travelled well in the run, it was most disappointing in its failure to finish the race off and may have come to the end of its preparation.
  • Magic Hurricane – when questioned regarding his riding, App. B Loy stated his instructions were to allow the gelding to settle where comfortable and from the 800m to shift his mount off in an endeavour to then work into the race. He added that, leaving the 800m, he elected to shift to the outside of Pajaro in accordance with his instructions, but then agreed with the Stewards that he had erred in continuing to ride forward and shift to the outside of Keep Cool, which resulted in his mount being forced extremely wide making the home turn when Keep Cool shifted out. App. Loy was advised that, in the view of the Stewards, he should have remained racing on the back of Keep Cool, which would have allowed that runner to take him into the race. Trainer Mr J O'Shea confirmed the instructions and acknowledged that App. Loy had made his run too early by not remaining on the back of Keep Cool.
  • Vergara – rider C Reith stated that, in his view, the mare did not handle the heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
