Vet Notes

Royal Celebration (Race 1) – a post-race veterinary examination of the colt, which was galloped on to the off-hind leg, revealed a minor abrasion.
All Too Huiying (Race 5) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to have lost its off-fore plate in running.
Seabrook (Race 7) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying the thumps. Trainer Mr M Price undertook to report back to the Stewards on the post-race condition of the filly in the days subsequent.

Summary of Races

RACE 1: Cabra-Vale Diggers Club Handicap 1300m

Gem Song – slow to begin. Near the 1000m was steadied to avoid the heels of Nuke (J Innes Jr), which shifted in when not clear. J Innes Jr was reprimanded. When questioned regarding his riding in the straight J Collett stated that after entering the straight his mount was travelling well and he elected to improve up behind Skidman. He said that when he did not observe a run available approaching the 300m he elected to shift out to search for clear running and as he did so Skidman then shifted out, which presented a run to that colt's inside. He added that, as he was committed to shifting out, he continued to ride his mount along to search for clear running, which resulted in Gem Song becoming very awkwardly placed on the heels of Royal Celebration for some distance. He said that soon after Royal Celebration then shifted out slightly, which presented a run to its inside which he was then able to obtain at the 120m. In acknowledging that Gem Song had gone on to win the race, Stewards advised J Collett that he must ride with more care to ensure that his mounts are not awkwardly positioned close to the heels of other runners and, furthermore, such riding may affect the finishing position of his mounts.
Cristobal – slow to begin.
Quackerjack – hampered on jumping by Nuke, which shifted out. Rider B Avdulla stated that with the moderate early tempo the colt was inclined to race keenly. He said near the 700m his mount made contact with Silent Explorer and failed to run on from that point. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr M Newnham advised that in his opinion Quackerjack was unsuited by the moderate early tempo and it is now his intention to remove the blinkers from the colt and step it up in distance. Mr Newnham undertook to report back if there is anything amiss with the colt subsequent to the race.
Silent Explorer – near the 1000m, when inclined to race keenly, hung out and was steadied away from the heels of Royal Celebration (A Adkins), which shifted in slightly. While Stewards accepted the racing manners of Silent Explorer were the principal reason for this incident, A Adkins was advised to ensure that he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground. Hung out throughout the event. When questioned regarding the gelding racing further back than expected today, rider K Latham advised that he was under instructions not to ride his mount along in the early stages as it has a tendency to race keenly and hang out. He said for this reason he did not pressure his mount in the early stages, which resulted in it not showing sufficient speed to cross runners to his inside.
Royal Celebration – raced wide and without cover throughout the event. A post-race veterinary examination of the colt, which was galloped on to the off-hind leg, revealed a minor abrasion.
Skidman – rider C Brown stated that the colt travelled well in the lead, but when placed under pressure in the straight was inclined to shift ground and did not respond to his riding. He said in his view Skidman may not have appreciated racing in a clockwise direction for the first time. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 2: TAB Highway Handicap 1500m

Lily's Little Girl – slow to begin. Held up for clear running in the early part of the straight. Over the final 200m had some difficulty obtaining clear running.
Justice Honor – slow to begin.
My Blue Jeans – hampered on jumping by Lethal Dream, which shifted out.
Burrangong – began awkwardly and made contact with My Blue Jeans. Raced wide and without cover throughout the event. Hung in in the straight.
So It Is – from its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners.
Electric Shadow – from its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners.
Vertex – held up on the home turn. When questioned regarding her riding from the 800m, K O'Hara stated that, whilst a position was available for the mare to improve into the race, her mount was reluctant to proceed to the inside of Lucciola Belle despite her efforts and for this reason lost ground near the 650m. She said that on the home turn and in the early part of the straight Vertex was held up on the heels of Justice Honor and, after securing clear running at the 250m, ran home strongly. K O'Hara advised that in her view the mare would be better suited with the addition of blinkers and being stepped up in distance.
Seeblume – held up making the home turn and in the early part of the straight.
Ethanicity – disappointed for a run to the inside of Risk And Reward near the 350m. A postrace veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Lucciola Belle – rider C Brown stated that the mare blundered near the 1400m and then was inclined to race keenly in the event. He said in the straight Lucciola Belle did not respond to his riding and in his view may not have handled the step up in grade.
Think Like A Fox – rider App. S Weatherley stated that from a wide barrier he was obliged to make some use of the mare in the early stages to hold a midfield position. He said Think Like A Fox raced greenly in the run, was inclined to race keen and near the 700m he became awkward on the heels of Lucciola Belle and was obliged to shift out to a four wide position, where he was left racing without cover from that point. App. Weatherley said that in the straight Think Like A Fox raced greenly and, after he dropped his nearside rein near the 250m, was one-paced to the finish of the race. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 3: 360MG Gloaming Stakes (Group 3) 1800m

Tarka – hampered and carried inwards on jumping by Tavirun.
Tavirun – began awkwardly and shifted in. Rider H Bowman stated his intention was to lead today, however when Thinkin' Big held the lead in the early stages he then elected to take a position to that runner's outside. He said when Irukandji improved to his outside in the early stages Tavirun commenced to race keenly and for this reason he elected to take a position behind Irukandji near the 1500m. He said in the early stages Tavirun settled in a trailing position and from the 700m he shifted out to commence a run, but Tavirun did not respond, raced on the wrong lead leg and did not improve. He added in the straight when his mount had not responded to his riding he elected to desist from pushing it out over the final 200m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mr T Busuttin advised that Tavirun had travelled up well from his Melbourne stable and could only concur with the explanations offered by H Bowman. He said he would have Tavirun subjected to a veterinary examination, including an endoscopy, the results of which he would report back to the Stewards. He said Tavirun would now return to his Melbourne stables and he undertook to report back if there is anything amiss with the gelding.
Panzerfaust – shortly after the start was steadied when Tavirun shifted out.
Irukandji – overraced in the early stages.

RACE 4: JRA Trophy (Group 3) 2400m

Goathland – Stewards permitted T Berry to ride the gelding 0.5 kilogram over its declared weight of 53 kilograms. Near the 1800m was allowed to stride forward by its rider when it would not settle in the early stages.
Harper's Choice – began awkwardly.
Miss Admiration – hampered shortly after the start by Harper's Choice, which shifted out.
Sin To Win – from its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages.
Shalmaneser – when the tempo steadied near the 2100m commenced to race keenly and was checked off the heels of Dark Eyes. Harper's Choice, which was following, also commenced to race keenly and shifted out, resulting in Goathland being hampered.
Etah James – passing the winning post on the first occasion, when being crossed by Cismontane (J Innes Jr), shifted out, resulting in Destiny's Kiss being taken wider. In this incident Goathland, which was racing keenly, improved to the inside of Etah James, resulting in Etah James then being caught wide and without cover throughout the early stages. J Innes Jr was asked to exercise more care and to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground.
Cismontane – raced keenly in the middle stages and near the 1600m was checked away from the heels of Etah James (C Brown), which shifted in when not clear. C Brown was reprimanded and told to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground. In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account the racing manners of Cismontane had contributed to the interference suffered by that runner. Raced wide and without cover throughout the middle stages.
Dark Eyes – soon after straightening was hampered and bumped by Shalmaneser (A Adkins), which shifted out. A Adkins was advised to exercise more care. In this incident Harper's Choice and Cismontane were also hampered.

RACE 5: Schweppes Shannon Stakes (Group 2) 1500m

All Too Huiying – Stewards permitted C Reith to ride the horse 1 kilogram over its declared weight of 53 kilograms. Began awkwardly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to have lost its off-fore plate in running.
Noire – began awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with All Too Huiying. Noire was then shifted in behind runners in the early stages.
Tally – began only fairly. Over the concluding stages, when positioned close to the heels of Noire, was inclined to lay in and could not be tested to the finish of the race.
Youngstar – near the 200m, when endeavouring to improve into a tight run between Kinsguard and All Too Huiying, made contact with All Too Huiying, which shifted out, and as a result became unbalanced. In this incident Youngstar was accidentally struck by the whip of C Reith, rider of All Too Huiying. Youngstar then raced in restricted room for some distance near the 100m to the inside of Kingsguard and was not able to be fully tested until near the 50m.

RACE 6: JHB Syndications Golden Pendant (Group 2) 1400m

Daysee Doom – began awkwardly. Rider A Adkins advised that the mare was able to secure a position with cover behind the leaders where it travelled well in the run and then, once he elected to shift off three wide near the 500m to improve, Daysee Doom did not quicken as he had expected and gave ground under pressure in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr R Quinton advised that Daysee Doom had pleased the stable leading into today's event. He said in his opinion the disappointing performance was attributable to the fact that the mare had an extended preparation, whereby it had travelled to race during the Queensland winter carnival after racing during the autumn and in his view Daysee Doom raced like a mare in need of a spell. Mr Quinton stated he would now consult with the owner of Daysee Doom and report back to the Stewards on a decision in respect to the mare's racing future. The matter was adjourned pending the advice from Mr Quinton in respect to Daysee Doom's racing future.
Magic Alibi – began awkwardly. From its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages.
Shumookh – began only fairly.
Invincibella – from its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages. When questioned regarding his riding from the 600m and the reason he did not shift to the outside of Eckstein soon after straightening, H Bowman stated that after following Eckstein that runner shifted off to improve near the 500m. He said when he formed the view that Eckstein was not travelling well and he observed both Prompt Response and Daysee Doom, two fancied runners, he elected to improve to the inside of Eckstein with a view to saving ground and improving between runners. He added, after making good ground on the turn and in the early part of the straight, both Prompt Response and Daysee Doom did not quicken as he had anticipated and this resulted in Invincibella being badly held up on the heels of Prompt Response for some distance. H Bowman further stated that he then elected to endeavour to secure clear running to the inside of Prompt Response, but was disappointed between Prompt Response and Princess Posh and did not secure clear running until inside the 100m, whereby Invincibella commenced to improve. He said over the final 50m he again could not test his mount when held up on the heels of Champagne Cuddles. Whilst the Stewards advised H Bowman that in their opinion his best option was to follow Eckstein and shift to that runner's outside on straightening, they found his decision to seek runs through field was not unreasonable in the circumstances, given he was electing to follow two fancied runners into the race and that Eckstein at that point was under pressure.
Dixie Blossoms – from its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Insensata – near the 50m was inclined to lay in and was corrected by its rider J Collett

RACE 7: De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose Stakes (Group 1) 1400m

Seabrook – began only fairly. Rider D Oliver could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance and agreed that the filly had performed below expectations. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying the thumps. Trainer Mr M Price undertook to report back to the Stewards on the post-race condition of the filly in the days subsequent.
Santos – began awkwardly and shifted in, making contact with the hindquarter of Sandbar.
Sandbar – bumped on the hindquarter on jumping by Santos.
Lean Mean Machine – for some distance in the early stages raced tight to the inside of Seabrook (D Oliver). Near the 1000m Lean Mean Machine was steadied as its rider T Angland restrained to obtain cover behind Graff when positioned tight to the inside of Seabrook. D Oliver was advised he should exercise more care in similar circumstances. Rider T Angland stated that the colt raced keenly in the early stages and, after being steadied away from the heels of Graff at the 1000m, was able to find a trailing position where it travelled reasonably well. He said in the straight Lean Mean Machine changed legs on a number of occasions before finishing the race off fairly. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 8: Gow-Gates Handicap 1400m

The Avenger – slow to begin. Near 300m was hampered when crowded between Got Unders and Astoria (J McDonald), which shifted to the inside of Lofty's Menu. J McDonald was advised to exercise more care. A short distance later Got Unders was hampered when momentarily crowded by Tip Top (T Clark), which shifted out. T Clark was advised to exercise more care. Fierce Impact – from its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages. Laid out over the final 100m.
Savacool – from the outside barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages. When commencing to make ground near the 100m was inconvenienced when Fierce Impact shifted out slightly, which resulted in J Ford, rider of Savacool, having to stop riding and straighten his mount for a number of strides.
Lofty's Menu – raced wide and without cover throughout the event.
Astoria – when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider J McDonald stated, after travelling well into the straight, he elected to shift to the inside of Lofty's Menu to improve and in doing so made contact with The Avenger. He said after this incident Astoria took some time to balance up, but nonetheless was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Mr D Beadman, representing trainer Mr J Cummings, undertook to report back on the progress of the mare in the days subsequent.

RACE 9: Fugen Handicap 2000m

Tamarack – Stewards permitted B Avdulla to ride the gelding 1 kilogram over its declared weight of 53 kilograms.
Jake's Hill – after being slow to begin was hampered shortly afterwards by Goodfella, which shifted out, Opposition - from its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages. After being held up on the heels of Tamarack for a short distance near the 200m, became awkward on the heels of that runner when Tamarack shifted out slightly.
Abdon – from its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages. Rider H Bowman stated that his mount got a long way back in the event and then in the straight was reluctant to shift to the outside of runners to improve, which resulted in Abdon being held up. He said Abdon continued to lay in for the remainder of the event. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth undertook to report back on the progress of the gelding in the days subsequent.
Quick Defence – from its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages. Rider T Berry stated that his mount was unsuited in having to race towards the rear of the field from his wide barrier and as a consequence the gelding found it difficult to make up ground in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth undertook to report back on the progress of gelding in the days subsequent.
Naval Warfare – laid in in the early stages.
Raqeeq – in the early part of the straight was held up when unable to secure clear running between Goodfella and The Lord Mayor. After briefly securing clear running near the 150m Raqeeq then raced in restricted room between The Lord Mayor and Goodfella over the final 100m of the event and could not be fully tested.
Romanesque – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
