Race-by-Race Summary

RACE 1: Cohort Global Handicap 2400m

  • Cabalistic – App. W Costin dropped, but quickly regathered, her nearside rein near the 150m.

RACE 2: ladbrokes.com.au Handicap 1500m

  • Elusive Catch – trainer Mr L Birchley was fined $50 under AR59A for failing to produce the Thoroughbred Identity Card for the filly. On the point of the home turn became unbalanced when the filly got close to the running rail.
  • Fifty Eight Facets – slow to begin. S Clipperton was cautioned by the Stewards for being close to breaching AR145 in respect to the weight he weighed in.
  • Steamin' – slow to begin.
  • Francesco – when questioned concerning the disappointing performance of the gelding, B Shinn stated that his mount did not handle the heavy going. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery and mild respiratory distress. B Shinn was cautioned by the Stewards for being close to breaching AR145 in respect to the weight he weighed in. Stable representative Mr M Newnham stated up in class and distance today, together with being second up after a long spell, were factors in the disappointing effort.
  • Alegria – lost its off-fore plate during the running of the event.

RACE 3: Bob Ingham Handicap 1100m

  • Honey Cara – jumped awkwardly, was inclined to lay out and near the 200m had to be directed away from the heels of Carriages, which commenced to give ground quickly
  • Voilier – crowded early when Japonisme (App. R Hutchings) shifted in. App. Hutchings was reprimanded and told to exercise more care. At the top of the straight was briefly hampered when Zoutenant shifted out to improve to the outside of the heels of Carriages. Lost its nearfore plate during the running of the event.
  • Tatoosh – crowded early when Japonisme was taken in.
  • Our First Lady – buffeted shortly after the start when Zoutenant was taken in by Carriages (P King). P King was reprimanded and told to ensure he is fully clear before shifting ground.
  • King's Troop – approaching the first turn, as King's Troop endeavoured to shift out and hold a position away from the rails, it came into contact with Japonisme, which was taken out onto Zoutenant, resulting in those three horses becoming briefly unbalanced. King's Troop then relieved the tightening by shifting back to occupy a rails position.

RACE 4: Alpha Flight Services Handicap 1350m

  • Berry Delicious – The start was delayed when the winner, Berry Delicious, had to be resaddled after being presented without a lead bag, which weighed 1.6 kilograms. It was established that the lead bag had inadvertently been left on the side of its tie-up stall. Trainer Mr J Coyle was fined $700 under AR140A(2) for having failed to properly saddle that runner. In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account that this was Mr Coyle's first offence.
  • Amazon – tightened for room on jumping away between Berry Delicious, which shifted out after being bumped by Commanding Wit and Breakfast In Bed, which shifted in. Inclined to lay in for some distance rounding the home turn.
  • Transfers – rider J McDonald was unable to offer any explanation for the performance of the mare, other than that it was inclined to race a little keenly in the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 5: Primo Smallgoods Handicap 1200m

  • Fireball – rider P King was spoken to concerning the use of the whip on a horse that was not responding.
  • Mount Nebo – rider G Schofield was unable to offer any explanation for the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery and the thumps. Trainer Mr A Denham indicated Mount Nebo would now be spelled.

RACE 6: Hungry Jacks Handicap 1350m

  • Radical Impact – prior to the declaration of correct weight, T Huet. rider, and Mr N Mitchell, trainer of 3rd placegetter, Radical Impact viewed the Stewards' footage of the final stages of the race. A protest was subsequently lodged by T Huet against 1st placegetter, Forget (B Shinn) for interference over the final stages of the race. After commencing the hearing, it became obvious that the protest could not succeed, as the grounds of interference outlined by T Huet alleged a shift in by the winner, Forget, over the final stages, which cost him 2nd place, but not first placing. The protest was withdrawn with the consent of the Stewards. The Stewards again re-affirmed with T Huet the principles that apply to Australian racing protest decisions and he was advised he may be penalised if he was to again lodge a protest of this nature. B Shinn, rider of Forget, was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in over the final 20m, crowding Radical Impact in onto Dragon Flyer, resulting in T Huet not being able to fully ride his mount out to the finish line (Radical Impact was beaten a short half head by Dragon Flyer into 3rd place). Whilst the Stewards acknowledge that the interference was not of a serious nature, B Shinn was told that he must make more effort to keep his mounts straight, as on this occasion his actions may well have cost Radical Impact 2 nd place.
  • Scratch Me Lucky – stood flat-footed when the start was effected and lost ground (4L). A warning was placed on the gelding. Stable foreman Mr S Perry was fined $100 under AR140A for failing to apply blinkers to Scratch Me Lucky.
  • Dance Of Heroes – when questioned concerning the performance of the gelding, H Bowman stated his mount raced a little keenly early but, after receiving cover, travelled well, however, failed to finish the race off. He added Dance Of Heroes was racing first up today over 1350m, having only trialled on one occasion and, in addition, Dance Of Heroes failed to handle today's heavy track. Trainer C Waller stated Dance Of Heroes did not handle today's ground. He indicated he would look to gradually step the gelding up in distance and may apply ear muffs, as it has shown a propensity to race too keenly.

RACE 7: Sydney Markets Limited Winter Stakes (Listed) 1400m

  • Spurtonic – rounding the home turn, Wouldnt It Be Nice (T Huet) improved up onto the heels of You'll Never, shifted out, hampering Spurtonic, See The World, Canny Ballard and Noela's Choice. Whilst the Stewards accepted that Wouldnt It Be Nice improved quickly towards the heels of You'll Never, T Huet was told in similar circumstances he would be expected to take more care. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • See The World – hampered rounding the home turn.
  • Canny Ballard – hampered rounding the home turn.
  • Noela's Choice – hampered rounding the home turn.
  • Haussmann – when questioned concerning the performance of the gelding, J McDonald stated that his mount did not seem to handle the heavy track today. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr D Beadman said that Haussmann was up in weight and distance and when successful at Rosehill on 4 July 2015 was advantaged by racing on the better part of the track. He added that Haussmann did not appear to handle today's track, which was, in his view, heavier than when the gelding was successful at this track on 4 July 2015.

RACE 8: Forum Group Handicap 1500m

  • Punch Your Weight – jumped awkwardly.
  • Golden Aro – rider stated that the gelding did not travel comfortably throughout the run on the heavy track and he had some concerns with its action. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr M Newnham undertook to furnish a veterinary report from the stable veterinarian.
