Vet Notes

  • Ocean Walzer (GER) (Race 3) - A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the left foreleg. Trainer Darren Weir was notified he must be in receipt of a veterinary certificate of soundness prior to racing again.
  • Romanesque (IRE)  (Race 3) – A post-race endoscopy of Romanesque (IRE) detected a degree of internal exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage that may have affected the horses racing performance. Trainer Jarrod McLean was notified that prior to racing again he must be in receipt of a veterinary certificate of soundness.
  • Enbihaar (Race 5)  - A post race veterinary examination revealed minor soreness to the fillys off foreleg.
  • Woulda Thought So (Race 6) -  A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the near hindleg. Co-trainers David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig were notified that prior to racing again they must be in receipt of a veterinary certificate of soundness.
  • Lord Fandango (GER) (Race 8) -  A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the near fore fetlock. Trainer Archie Alexander was notified that he must be in receipt of a veterinary certificate of soundness prior to racing again.
  • Lucky For All (NZ) (Race 8 - A post race veterinary examination revealed a small laceration on its near foreleg.

Penalties & Fines

  • Apprentice Ethan Brown (Freehearted) Pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a), the carelessness being that passing the 50m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Tardis (James Winks) which had to be restrained. Ethan Browns permit to ride races was suspended for a period to commence at midnight 28 November 2018 and to expire at midnight 5 December 2018. (8 meetings, 2 metropolitan, 6 provincial). In assessing penalty Stewards deemed the incident to be in the low range and took into account his guilty plea and record.
  • Apprentice rider Fred Kersley (Khartoum) Pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a), the careless riding being that near the 300m he shifted outwards to obtain a position where there was insufficient room to do so, thereby taking Bling Dynasty outwards when making contact with that gelding resulting in Bling Dynasty having to be checked off the heels of Ocean Walzer (GER). Stewards conceded there was a minor shift by Ocean Walzer (GER) in the latter stages of the incident which may have contributed to a minor degree. Fred Kersleys permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence at midnight 28 November 2018 and to expire at midnight 6 December 2018. (9 meetings, 2 metropolitan, 7 provincial). In assessing penalty Stewards deemed the incident to be in the mid range and took into account his guilty plea, excellent record and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
  • Jarrod Lorensini rider Andrea Mantegna (USA)  was fined $400 for using his whip three times more than permitted prior to the 100m.
  • Apprentice rider Tahlia Hope (Proud Wolf)  was fined $200 under the provisions of AR137A(5)(a)(i) for using her whip in consecutive strides prior to the 100m. Tahlia Hope was further fined the sum of $300 under the provisions of AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using her whip three times more than permitted prior to the 100m.

Race 1 HERTZ BALLARAT MARES BM78 - 1200 metres:

  • Egyptian Bullet Hampered at the start by Doves Cry which began awkwardly and shifted out.
  • Freehearted Slow to begin.
  • So Far Sokool (NZ) Got its head up and raced keenly through the early and middle stages.
  • Tardis Inclined to lay inwards in the straight. Passing the 50m had to be restrained to avoid the heels of Freehearted (Ethan Brown) which shifted in when not fully clear.
  • Smart Coupe Disappointing. Rider apprentice Stephanie Thornton stated in her opinion the mare had come to the end of its current preparation. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Co-trainers Matthew Ellerton and Simon Zahra will be contacted in the coming days to check if any matter has arisen which may have affected the performance.
  • Doves Cry Commenced awkwardly. Weakened from the 200m. Rider Beau Mertens stated that in his opinion the mare felt amiss in its action. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Henry Dwyer will be contacted in the coming days to check if any matter has arisen which may have affected the performance.

Race 2 GLOBAL TURF BM70 HANDICAP - 1100 metres:

  • I Am Queen Change of tactics. Connections advised it was intended for the mare to be ridden further forward if circumstances permit. Settled behind the leading horses.
  • Vellastar Commenced awkwardly. Raced greenly in the home straight.
  • Via Balciano Began awkwardly and made heavy contact with the starting stalls. Rider Joe Bowditch could offer no explanation for the performance. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • French Rock Overraced through the middle stages.
  • Rox The Castle (NZ) Began awkwardly. On straightening approaching the 300m was bumped by I AM Queen (Dwayne Dunn) which shifted out to improve. Dwayne Dunn was reprimanded and notified to exercise far more care in similar circumstances.
  • OLonhro Bay Raced wide without cover.

Race 3 CHAMPIONS ESTATE BM78 HANDICAP - 2300 metres:

  • Finn McCool (IRE) Began awkwardly. After being wide in the early stages was allowed to stride forward and settle outside the leader near the 1300m.
  • Docker Pav Raced keenly in the early stages. Raced wide without cover. Hung in from the 250m.
  • Bling Dynasty Raced wide in the early stages until striding forward to a position outside the leader near the 1600m. Passing the 300m had to be checked when tightened for room between Ocean Walzer (GER) and Khartoum (Fred Kersley).
  • The Dominator (NZ) Had difficulty obtaining clear running from approaching the 400m until near the 200m.
  • Ocean Walzer (GER) Poor performance. Rider apprentice Ethan Brown stated that in his opinion the gelding felt uncomfortable in its action. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the left foreleg. Trainer Darren Weir was notified he must be in receipt of a veterinary certificate of soundness prior to racing again.
  • Romanesque (IRE) Poor performance. Rider Dean Yendall stated that his mount felt amiss from a long way out and as a result was eased down in the straight. Post-race endoscopy of Romanesque (IRE) detected a degree of internal exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage that may have affected the horses racing performance. Trainer Jarrod McLean was notified that prior to racing again he must be in receipt of a veterinary certificate of soundness.
  • Pedro Ximenez Poor performance. Rider Rhys McLeod stated his mount failed to handle the track conditions. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Race 4 MAGIC MILLIONS 2YO CLOCKWISE CLASSIC - 1000 metres:

  • Not A Royal Doubt Severely tightened for room at the start between Faith And Love and Ancestry which shifted out abruptly. Performed below market expectations. Rider Stephen Baster reported after receiving interference at the start the filly settled back in the field and raced greenly throughout. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. A post race swab sample was taken.
  • Faith And Love Hampered at the start when bumped on the hindquarters by Not A Royal Doubt which had been taken out by Ancestry. Raced wide rounding the home turn.
  • Ancestry Began awkwardly, shifting out abruptly. Raced three wide without cover and hung out on straightening before then being eased down over the concluding stages. Rider Luke Nolen stated that the colt hung out and further did not appreciate the track conditions. The stable was advised that a warning would be placed on the colt for its racing manners and performance. The stable indicated that the colt will now be sent for a spell.
  • Absolute Flirt Slow to begin.
  • Testino Hung out on straightening.

Race 5 POLYTRACK VOBIS GOLD EUREKA STOCKADE - 1400 metres:

  • Vunivalu Began awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with Enbihaar.
  • Enbihaar Bumped at the start by Vunivalu. Performed below market expectations. Rider Mark Zahra stated he was of the opinion the filly may not run out a strong 1400m and further felt that it may have not appreciated todays track conditions. A post race veterinary examination revealed minor soreness to the fillys off foreleg.
  • Bricktop When racing keenly near the 1200m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Winning Partner, and when doing so shifted out abruptly hampering No Emotion.
  • No Emotion Hampered passing the 1200m.
  • Winning Partner Raced keenly in the middle stages.
  • Dalswinton Performed below market expectations. Rider Luke Nolen was of the opinion that the gelding may have come to the end of its current preparation. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Big Night Out Rider Dwayne Dunn reported in his opinion the colt may have not appreciated todays track conditions and further may have come to the end of its current preparation.

Race 6 SUEZ MCKELLAR MILE - 1600 metres:

  • Penthouse Poet Slow to begin.
  • Ripper Rio Slow to begin.
  • Into Rio (NZ) Tightened shortly after the start by Diplomac Jack which shifted in.
  • Kentucky Breeze Raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.
  • Elite Tiger When questioned regarding his tactics in the back straight rider John Allen reported after jumping from the extreme outside barrier he remained in a wide position in the back straight as in his opinion he felt that the track was firmer out wide.
  • Woulda Thought So Rider Dwayne Dunn reported the gelding felt amiss in its action. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the near hindleg. Co-trainers David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig were notified that prior to racing again they must be in receipt of a veterinary certificate of soundness.
  • Silent Command Performed poorly. Rider Linda Meech reported her mount was not suited by the quick early tempo of the event. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Race 7 THE HAYMARKET BALLARAT BM84 HANDICAP - 1400 metres:

  • Mr Gustavo (NZ) Late scratching at 10.55am due to track downgrade.
  • Cant Refuse Late scratching at 8.39am. Trainer Kelvin Bourke was fined $200 for failing to scratch the gelding by the prescribed time.
  • Shintaro Became fractious in the barriers. Examined by the RV Veterinary Surgeon who deemed the gelding unfit to race. Late scratching at 4.02pm. All monies bet for a win and/or place and concession betting on the late scratching to be refunded.

All successful bets on horses prior to time of withdrawal are subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of the ticket:

Place Bets (For Winner) Haunted - 3 cents

Place Bets (For 2nd) - Chippenham 4 cents

*All monies bet after the Stewards declaration of withdrawal to be paid at face value of ticket. Trainer Pat McKenna was notified that prior to racing again the gelding must perform to the satisfaction of Stewards in a trial.

  • Redefine Became fractious in its barrier. Examined by the RV Veterinary Surgeon who deemed the gelding unfit to race. Late scratching at 4.04pm. All monies bet for a win and/or place and concession betting on the late scratching to be refunded.

All successful bets on horses between 4.02pm and the withdrawal are subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of the ticket:

*All monies bet after the Stewards declaration of withdrawal to be paid at face value of ticket. Trainer Rachael Frost was notified that prior to racing again the gelding must perform to the satisfaction of Stewards in a trial.

Subsequent to the race apprentice rider Fred Kersley (Shintaro) was examined by RV Medical Staff who deemed him fit to fulfil his remaining engagement. Apprentice rider Jess Eaton (Redefine (NZ)) was examined by RV Medical Staff and deemed unfit to fulfil future engagements until she provides a medical certificate.

  • Chippenham Vetted pre-race when a runner in an adjacent stall became cast and was passed fit to race. Knuckled on jumping away.
  • Haunted - Vetted pre-race when a runner in an adjacent stall became cast and was passed fit to race.
  • Guizot (IRE) Rider Jack Martin stated that he was disappointed in the performance and a post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Race 8 SPORTSBET BALLARAT CUP - 2200 metres:

  • He Ekscels (NZ) Late scratching at 9.56am on veterinary advice.
  • Lycurgus Late scratching at 1.23pm due to track downgrade.
  • Lord Fandango (GER) Change of tactics. Connections advised it was intended for the horse to be ridden more forward if circumstances permit. Settled outside the leader in the early stages before then travelling three wide without cover from the 1600m. Performed below market expectations. Rider Jordan Childs reported that his mount travelled well however when placed under pressure passing the 800m failed to respond and in his opinion may have not appreciated todays track conditions. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the near fore fetlock. Trainer Archie Alexander was notified that he must be in receipt of a veterinary certificate of soundness prior to racing again.
  • Kiwia Tightened for room at the 450m when obtaining a narrow run on the inside of Tradesman which lay in slightly before being straightened.
  • Pilote Dessai (GB) Lay outwards under pressure in the straight.
  • Mask Of Time (IRE) Performed below market expectations. Rider Mark Zahra reported in his opinion the gelding is better suited when ridden more forward and therefore was not best suited by todays circumstances ridden midfield and unable to gain cover. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Lucky For All (NZ) Raced keenly through the early and middle stages. Performed below market expectations. Rider Jye McNeil reported that the gelding raced too keenly in the early stages with the addition of blinkers. A post race veterinary examination revealed a small laceration on its near foreleg.
  • Luvaluva (NZ) Performed below market expectations. Rider Luke Currie stated in his opinion the mare did not appreciate todays track conditions. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Andrea Mantegna (USA) Rider Jarrod Lorensini was fined $400 for using his whip three times more than permitted prior to the 100m.

Race 9 MAGIC MILLIONS 3&4YO CLASSIC - 1100 metres:

  • Starvirgo Began awkwardly.
  • Columbia Began awkwardly. Steadied passing the 300m when disappointed for a run to the inside of Sonic Deed. Then held up for clear running until approaching the 200m.
  • Chalcidian Slow to begin. Raced keenly through the early and middle stages.
  • Bel Sonic Brushed by Platinum Angel passing the 100m due to Platinum Angel shifting out. Was again brushed passing the 50m due to Platinum Angel shifting out slightly.
  • As It Lies Performed below market expectations. Rider Luke Currie reported in his opinion the mare had to work hard in the early stages and although it has performed well on soft tracks previously, did not appear to handle todays track conditions. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Race 10 NO FUSS EVENT HIRE TONKS PLATE - 1200 metres:

  • Tried And Tired Late scratching at 12.35pm on Veterinary Advice.
  • Man From Uncle Difficult to load into its barrier. Trainer Darren Weir was notified that prior to racing again the gelding must perform to the satisfaction of Stewards in a trial.
  • Keen Array Began awkwardly.
  • Rock N Gold Lay outwards rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight.
  • Stellar Collision Performed below market expectations. Rider apprentice Ethan Brown stated that his mount finished off fairly and he was not too disappointed with the performance. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Bassett (NZ) Performed below market expectations. Rider apprentice Zac Spain reported in his opinion the gelding did not appreciated todays track conditions. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Jungle Edge Rider apprentice Michael Poy was spoken to advisably regarding undoing his chin strap prior to dismounting.
  • Proud Wolf Rider apprentice Tahlia Hope was fined $200 under the provisions of AR137A(5)(a)(i) for using her whip in consecutive strides prior to the 100m. Tahlia Hope was further fined the sum of $300 under the provisions of AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using her whip three times more than permitted prior to the 100m.
