Horse of the Week: Sebring Sun

Published: 11 Aug 2015

Flashy sprinter - Sebring Sun is this week's Horse of the Week

Warwick Farm based trainer Gary Portelli has always been excited about the prospects of SEBRING SUN, a young colt described as a "ready made sprinter" in his early two-year-old season.

But his performances on the track suggested he was far from the finished product in his first preparation. A three-length 3rd at 7/4 and five-length 7th at 11/4 in a four start campaign tested the patience of supporters.

The 'penny has dropped' as a three-year-old though, faithful supporters repaid with two strong wins this season. His latest victory, a dominant performance at Listed level in The Rosebud last Saturday, is worthy of this week's Horse of the Week.

Quick Facts

  • Purchased at the 2014 MM Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $100,000.00
  • He is the 14th stakes winner for Sebring, sire of Queen Elizabeth winner Criterion
  • His Maiden win was over Montauk, a talented young Waller galloper that was very well backed to win the race on debut
  • He has the early speed to race near the pace, but Portelli prefers his dazzling sprint to be saved for the finish
  • His target race is the Group One Golden Rose, questions remain over whether 1,400 metres will prove to be too far

Pure power - Sebring Sun has plenty of speed, but can he stay 1,400 metres?
