Race-by-Race Summary

RACE 1: Fairfield RSL Club Handicap 1200m

  • Decision Time – overraced for some distance approaching the first turn.
  • Kristy Lee – inclined to lay in approaching the first turn and got its head up rounding the first turn. Laid in under pressure in the straight.

RACE 2: Dooleys Handicap 1500m

  • Grande Punto – at the 1100m had to be steadied off the heels of Careless, then pulled hard throughout. Trainer Mr A Denham reported that the gelding would be spelled.
  • Berrimilla – when questioned concerning her riding in the straight, App. S Clenton stated she was under instructions that, if her mount did not begin cleanly and got back in the field, to ride it for luck and not to make its run wide out. App. Clenton explained, upon straightening, she elected to shift back inside the heels of Mr One Eleven, but that Berrimilla, which was inclined to lay out, was then held up for some distance on the back of Careless and did not obtain clear running until inside the 50m, when Marenostro and Dylan's Rojo shifted out under pressure. App. Clenton was told, in the opinion of the Stewards, she had erred in that there was an opportunity to improve around Mr One Eleven and she did not direct her mount out shortly after entering the straight. Whilst the Stewards recognised she may have believed that was contrary to her instructions, nevertheless she was advised that she must show initiative to give the horses she is riding full opportunity to win.
  • Astronomos – when questioned regarding the performance, J Collett stated he was obliged to make a prolonged run and the horse's run peaked prior to the 100m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr D Vandyke stated that he was not entirely disappointed with the performance of the horse, as it was five weeks between runs and was dropping back in distance today. He added that Astronomos had to make a long run and, in his opinion, performed reasonably well to finish within 3.5 lengths of the winner.

RACE 3: Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club Spring Preview 1400m

  • Magic Hurricane – jumped away awkwardly.
  • Centre Pivot – when questioned concerning the improved performance of the winner, as compared with its 7th placing first up over 1300m at Rosehill on 1 August 2015, trainer Mr J Sargent stated that primarily the improvement was due to the ride of B Shinn in assessing the situation, going forward, sitting outside the leader, Countryman, and then making it into a staying test from prior to the home turn. He added also that Centre Pivot had taken some benefit from its first up run, appreciated the firm track conditions and also the step up in distance. B Shinn was questioned concerning the tactics adopted, in light of the explanation offered to Stewards when querying Centre Pivot's disappointing first up effort at Rosehill on 1 August 2015 that he had ridden the gelding too close to the lead. B Shinn clarified that he had no instructions from trainer Mr J Sargent to go forward today, however, from its widest barrier, the gelding jumped particularly well and, firstly, assessed if he could take up a position preferably in front of Junoob and Thunder Lady. He added that, when no rider pressed forward and the pace was moderate, he felt his only option was to come across the field with Countryman, as to restrain his mount back to last would have given it no opportunity to win, particularly with the race developing into a sprint home. He further stated, in his view, Centre Pivot had taken benefit from its first up run, was dropping considerably in weight and had appreciated the good track surface. Mr Sargent was advised that, now Centre Pivot had re-established form, it would be expected to race consistently.

RACE 4: St Johns Park Bowling Club Handicap 1400m

  • Holy Delusions – slow to begin.
  • Nisroc – jumped awkwardly.
  • Silver Trinket – shortly after the start was hampered when bumped by Lani Girl, which shifted out and away from Aerobar. Overraced in the middle stages.
  • Lani Girl – overraced in the middle stages.
  • Footy Fan – passing the 300m became unbalanced after shifting out and making contact with Black Booty.
  • Aerobar – for some distance over the final 200m raced tight between Marple Miss and Bring A Ring, which was inclined to shift out under pressure.
  • Oxford Heart – when questioned concerning the performance, T Berry stated he got further back than expected when Footy Fan did not press on and lead, but nevertheless Oxford Heart was disappointing in its failure to finish off the race in the latter part of the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 5: Smithfield RSL Club San Domenico Stakes (Group 3) 1100m

  • Redzel – rounding the first turn when the pace steadied, after Headwater crossed Vancouver, Redzel raced up onto the heels of Japonisme, had to be checked and shifted in, causing Alart to be inconvenienced.
  • Vancouver – when questioned, T Berry, rider of 4th placegetter, stated his instructions had been to be positive and, whilst he had to make a little use of the colt early, he was able to take up the position he wanted. He added that, under its big weight, he felt Vancouver was outsprinted from the 400m to the 200m, but then held its ground and he was not disappointed with its effort (beaten 2.2 lengths). A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Headwater – when questioned, B Shinn stated he had to make far too much use of his mount to cross and race outside Haptic and that first up, carrying 59 kilograms, that effort had taken its toll and Headwater compounded quickly over the final 200m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mr M Hawkes concurred with the views of rider B Shinn and emphasised that the outside barrier had been the principal determinant in the colt finishing where it did.

RACE 6: Mounties Group Handicap 1100m

  • Pro Consul – the start was delayed as the tongue tie on the gelding had to be refitted in the barrier.
  • Dupe 'Em – had to be steadied off the heels of Awasita, which shifted in at the start.
  • Isorich – near the 200m was held up on the heels of Onerous and then Friendsinlowplaces.
  • Friendsinlowplaces – near the 50m had to be steadied away from the heels of Latin Salsa, which was taken out by Cosmic Cameo.

RACE 7: ClubsNSW Handicap 1350m

  • Global Domination – slow to begin.
  • His Majesty – rounding the first turn had to be checked when Global Domination was taken in by Turf Crusher (C Reith), which shifted in slightly. C Reith was advised that he was not held fully responsible for the interference to His Majesty, however, he was reprimanded and told he must ensure runners to his inside have sufficient room at all times.
  • Montiro – rider J Collett dropped his whip near the 250m.

RACE 8: Merrylands RSL Club Premier's Cup Prelude 1800m

  • Spurtonic – made contact with the running rail rounding the first turn.
  • Eigelstein – steadied at the 1100m when the pace slackened. Eigelstein, which was commencing to give ground, had to be checked near the 100m when tightened for room between Oriental Lady (T Clark), which initially shifted in, and Spurtonic (B Shinn), which shifted out. T Clark and B Shinn were told to exercise care. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding found it to have lost its near-fore plate and sustained a speedy cut to the off-fore pastern.
  • Orion Love – steadied at the 1100m when the pace slackened.
  • Havana Cooler - steadied at the 1100m when the pace slackened. When questioned regarding his riding in the straight, S Clipperton stated he was under instructions to look for a run through the field to improve. He added at the entrance to the straight he endeavoured to improve between Eigelstein and Spurtonic, but that run closed when Spurtonic shifted out. He said he then shifted back in, but was again held up on the back of Greatwood, before shifting out passing the 100m and eventually gaining clear ground around Beyond Thankful.
