She further explained that coming down the dip from the 500m until the 400m, her mount felt uncomfortable in its action and as a result became unbalanced. Tahlia Hope stated that once her mount was balanced passing the 300m, she rode her mount along and Jay Jay Dor finished the race off well. Trainer Patrick Payne confirmed the instructions however said he was surprised that the filly was at the rear of the field. He further stated that although he was not on course, it appeared that Jay Jay Dor did not come down the hill well from the 500m until 350m, he also stated that he was pleased with the way the filly finished the race off. Stewards accepted the explanation of Tahlia Hope and conceded that Jay Jay Dor appeared to become unbalanced coming down the hill, however advised her that in their opinion, she should have shown more vigour from the 300m until approaching the 100m. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 6 - Spicer Thoroughbreds Handicap - 1000m:

Correct weight was delayed when apprentice Michael Poy, rider of Miss Norway (second placegetter) lodged an objection against As It Lies being declared first placegetter alleging interference near the 600m and again from the 300m until the winning post. On the evidence it was established that near the 600m Miss Norway was steadied away from the heels of As It Lies which shifted in, and then passing the 300m As It Lies shifted out and bumped Miss Norway taking that mare wider on the course and continued to shift out; then passing the 100m again shifted out and bumped Miss Norway carrying that mare out off its course. Stewards were of the opinion that the incident at the 600m was negligible however if the interference had not occurred from the 300m to the winning post, Miss Norway would have beaten As It Lies to the winning post and therefore the objection was upheld and the placings were amended as follows and correct weight was declared: First placegetter - Miss Norway, second placegetter - As It Lies.

  • Miss Norway - was steadied away from the heels of As It Lies (Lachlan King) which shifted in near the 600m. Bumped passing the 300m and taken wider on the course by As It Lies. Passing the 100m was bumped and taken out off its course by As It Lies.
  • Lachlan King (As It Lies) - pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a), the carelessness being that he permitted his mount to shift out near the 300m resulting in Miss Norway being bumped and taken out off its course, and again near the 100m, whilst being ridden along, he again shifted out resulting in Miss Norway being bumped and taken out further off its course. Lachlan King had his permit to ride in races suspended for a period to commence at midnight December 27th and to expire at midnight January 3rd, a total of eight race meetings (three metropolitan, five provincial) and is to be served cumulatively with the suspension he incurred at Moonee Valley on December 7th. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account his guilty plea and that the carelessness was in the mid-range however made concessions so that the total term of his suspension is not manifestly excessive. Lachlan King was also referred to the Apprentice Skills Panel.
