Vet Notes
- Movie Role (Race 1) - A post race veterinary examination revealed a slower than normal recovery.
- Wyangle (Race 3) – A post race veterinary examination of Wyangle identified the presence of blood at both nostrils. Wyangle shall not without permission of the Stewards: (a) be trained, exercised or galloped on any racecourse for a period of two months thereafter; (b) start in any race for a period of three months, and then only after a satisfactory gallop of at least 1,000 metres in the presence of a Steward.
- Rockets Red Glare (Race 4) - A post race veterinary examination of Rockets Red Glare identified the presence of blood at both nostrils. Rockets Red Glare shall not without permission of the Stewards: (a) be trained, exercised or galloped on any racecourse for a period of two months thereafter; (b) start in any race for a period of three months, and then only after a satisfactory gallop of at least 1,000 metres in the presence of a Steward.
- Five Kingdom (Race 6) - A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have been galloped on on its off hindleg.
- Earth Angel (Race 8) - A post race veterinary examination revealed a slower than normal recovery.
- Warragul (Race 9) – A post race veterinary examination of Warragul identified the presence of blood at both nostrils. Warragul shall not without permission of the Stewards: (a) be trained, exercised or galloped on any racecourse for a period of two months thereafter; (b) start in any race for a period of three months, and then only after a satisfactory gallop of at least 1,000 metres in the presence of a Steward.
Penalties & Fines
- Joe Bowditch (Mahis Angel) Found guilty of a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a), the carelessness being that near the 150m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Piemonte resulting in that gelding having to be checked to avoid Mahis Angels heels. Joe Bowditchs licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence at midnight 22 December 2018 and to expire at midnight 30 December 2018. (8 meetings, 2 metropolitan, 6 provincial). In assessing penalty Stewards deemed the incident to be in the low range and took into account his record.
- Lachlan King (Masculino 1st place) Fined the sum of $750 under the provisions of AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using his whip four times more than permitted prior to the 100m.
- Micheal Poy (Reata) Pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a), the carelessness being that near the 200m he permitted his mount to shift in whilst riding it along and causing crowding to the running of Midnight Cowboy and Devils Rain which resulted in both horses being hampered when racing between Reata and Moor Wanted. Micheal Poys permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence at midnight 22 December 2018 and to expire at midnight 30 December 2018. (8 meetings, 2 metropolitan, 6 provincial). In assessing penalty Stewards deemed the incident to be in the low range and took into consideration his guilty plea and record.
Summary of Races
Race 1 secondbite plate - 1100 metres:
- Oh So Rewarding Jumped away awkwardly, then shifted out abruptly.
- Spirit In The Sky Jumped away awkwardly, shifted out and hampered Movie Role. Performed below market expectations. Rider Dwayne Dunn reported that the colt travelled well early but when placed under pressure failed to respond and in his opinion was disappointing. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Co-trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young will be contacted in the coming days to check if any matter has arisen which may have affected the performance.
- Movie Role Hampered at the start. Performed below market expectations. Rider Craig Williams reported that the filly had every chance and in his opinion would benefit from the run. A post race veterinary examination revealed a slower than normal recovery.
Race 2 sports environment alliance handicap - 1410 metres:
- Born Bad Jumped away awkwardly.
- Blow Torch Jumped away awkwardly.
- Really Swish Slow to begin. Held up from the 400m before gaining clear running passing the 200m.
- Peace Brother When racing fiercely got its head in the air and near the 1100m shifted out and took Social Spin wider on the course.
- Mahis Angel Raced keenly in the early and middle stages and from the 900m raced four wide without cover.
- Social Spin Raced three wide without cover. Near the 1100m was taken wider on the course by Peace Brother which shifted out.
- Bezos Weakened from the 300m. Rider Stephen Baster could offer no explanation for the performance. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
- Piemonte Rider Andrew Mallyon momentarily dropped his whip before quickly retrieving it near the 200m. Near the 150m had to be checked to avoid the heels of Mahis Angel which shifted in.

Race 3 vrc employee volunteer program trophy - 1720 metres:
- Wyangle Jumped away awkwardly and was then tightened for room between Masculino and Boxachocolates (NZ) which jumped away awkwardly and shifted out. Performed below market expectations. Post race veterinary examination of Wyangle identified the presence of blood at both nostrils. Wyangle shall not without permission of the Stewards: (a) be trained, exercised or galloped on any racecourse for a period of two months thereafter; (b) start in any race for a period of three months, and then only after a satisfactory gallop of at least 1,000 metres in the presence of a Steward.
- Boxachocolates (NZ) Jumped away awkwardly and shifted out.
- Balcazar Marginally slow to begin and then had to be steadied after being tightened for room by Scherzoso which shifted out on jumping away.
- Scherzoso Shifted out on jumping away.
- Romancer (NZ) Began awkwardly.

Race 4 pin & win fundraiser trophy - 1200 metres:
- Weapon Late scratching at 11.45am on veterinary advice.
- Heavenward Jumped away awkwardly.
- Delta Dor Jumped away awkwardly.
- Rockets Red Glare Got its head up when racing fiercely in the early stages. Post race veterinary examination of Rockets Red Glare identified the presence of blood at both nostrils. Rockets Red Glare shall not without permission of the Stewards: (a) be trained, exercised or galloped on any racecourse for a period of two months thereafter; (b) start in any race for a period of three months, and then only after a satisfactory gallop of at least 1,000 metres in the presence of a Steward.
- Onehundred Percent Checked near the 400m when tightened for room between Midnight Cowboy (Chelsea MacFarlane) which initially shifted out and Reata (Michael Poy) which then shifted inside the heels of Southern Turf. Apprentice Michael Poy was severely reprimanded and apprentice Chelsea MacFarlane was reprimanded and both riders were notified to exercise far more care in future.
- Via Balciano Had difficulty obtaining clear running between the 300m and 200m. Shifted out under pressure near the 150m.
- Midnight Cowboy Hampered near the 200m when crowded for room. Crowded near the 150m between Devils Rain and Reata which shifted in. Steadied approaching the finishing line when racing inside the heels of Southern Turf.
- Devils Rain Hampered near the 200m when crowded for room. When weakening near the 150m had to be steadied when tightened for room between Via Balciano (Lachlan King) which shifted out and Midnight Cowboy which was taken in by Reata (Michael Poy) which when being ridden along, shifted in. Both Lachlan King and Micheal Poy were severely reprimanded and notified to exercise care when in similar circumstances in future. Performed below market expectations. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mark Webb will be contacted in the coming days to check if any matter has arisen which may have affected the performance.

Race 5 union rd traders assocaition handicap - 1410 metres:
- Keen Array Connections advised it was intended for the gelding to be ridden further forward if circumstances permit. Led. Poor performance.. Rider apprentice Georgina Cartwright reported when placed under pressure her mount failed to respond to her riding. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
- Rock N Gold Jumped away awkwardly. Rider apprentice Lachlan King near the 250m got his whip entangled in the reins. Rider apprentice Georgina Cartwright accidentally struck the arm of Lachlan King with her whip.
- Prima (NZ) Raced three wide without cover.
Race 6 vrc schools program trophy - 1720 metres:
- Annunciate Jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
- Nothin Leica High Jumped away awkwardly.
- Mr Monaco Jumped away awkwardly.
- Shrouded In Mist Shortly after the start shifted out abruptly before being straightened by its rider. Overraced in the early and middle stages. Rider Luke Currie reported that the mare overraced early and as a result ended up further forward, Could offer no explanation for the performance. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
- Okotoks (NZ) Which was overracing had to be steadied off the heels of Ryans Fender near the 1000m and as a result Five Kingdom which was following was hampered in consequence, five Kingdom when being steadied at this point resulted in Hostar which was following clipping the heels of Five Kingdom and knuckling.
- Bricktop Jumped away awkwardly. Caught wide in the early stages was allowed to stride forward to sit outside the leader near the 1300m.
- Five Kingdom Hampered and had to be steadied off the Okotoks (NZ) near the 1000m when the pace slackened. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have been galloped on on its off hindleg.
- Hostar Clipped the heels of Five Kingdom near the 1000m and knuckled.
- Loricain Held up from the 400m until passing the 200m, however failed to run on after gaining clear running.
Race 7 saddle up school holiday program sprint - 1100 metres:
- Top Me Up Jumped away awkwardly.
- Whispering Brook Jumped away awkwardly. Bumped shortly after the start by I Did It Again.
- I Did It Again Jumped away awkwardly, shifted out and bumped Whispering Brook.
- Holy Blade Performed poorly. Rider Jye McNeil reported the horse travelled well, however when placed under pressure failed to respond to his riding. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
- Quatronic Tailed off. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
Race 8 make-a-wish australia trophy - 2540 metres:
- Kalalo Raced three wide without cover before being allowed to stride forward and sit behind the leader near the 1300m. When giving ground near the 150m had to steady to avoid the heels of Goodwood Zodiac (IRE) (Mark Zahra) which layed out under pressure when giving ground. Mark Zahra was notified to exercise care when in similar circumstances in future.
- Chapal Jumped away awkwardly.
- Pleasuring Jumped away awkwardly. Weakened from the 300m. Rider apprentice Michael Poy could offer no explanation for the performance. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
- Mazaz (IRE) Hung in under pressure in the straight.
- Pedro Ximenez Approaching the winning post was inconvenienced by Crafty Devil (Ethan Brown) which shifted out. Apprentice Ethan Brown was reprimanded and notified to exercise far more care when in similar circumstances.
- Crafty Devil Shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages.
- Goodwood Zodiac (IRE) Rider Mark Zahra reported his mount hung out throughout.
- Captain Rhett - Performed below market expectations. Rider Micheal Dee reported that his mount may have failed to run out 2500m. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Pat Carey will be contacted in the coming days to check if any matter has arisen which may have affected the performance.
- Earth Angel - Performed below market expectations. Rider Craig Williams could offer no explanation for the performance. A post race veterinary examination revealed a slower than normal recovery.
Race 9 wingate avenue community centre trophy - 1100 metres:
- Essence Of Terror Bounded in the air as the start was effected and then shifted in abruptly.
- World Of Hope Jumped away awkwardly.
- Queen Annabel Jumped away awkwardly. Held up from the 400m until passing the 50m.
- Hay Now Began awkwardly. Hung out.
- Naantali (NZ) Held up from the 400m until 150m.
- Warragul – A post race veterinary examination of Warragul identified the presence of blood at both nostrils.
