Summary of Races

RACE 1: 2019 Membership Handicap 1000m:

  • Igniting – under pressure in the straight was inclined to shift ground and proved somewhat difficult to ride out.
  • Taikun – slow to begin.
  • Bengalla Bay – raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event. Near the 200m was checked to avoid the heels of Iconic Star (App. R. Dolan), which when inclined to race greenly shifted out and away from Hightail. Whilst accepting that the racing manners of Iconic Star contributed to the incident, App. Dolan was reprimanded under AR137(a) and advised that he must make greater effort to straighten his mounts. In this incident Bengalla Bay ran out and away from Iconic Star and lost further ground. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be slow to recover.
  • Enraged – As H. Bowman was overweight, Stewards permitted T. Berry to be substituted as the rider of the colt. At a subsequent inquiry H. Bowman was fined $100 under AR120(b) for accepting a ride when found to be overweight. Slow to begin and, shortly afterwards, made contact with Movie Role after both runners shifted ground slightly.
  • Deviate – under pressure in the straight raced greenly and was inclined to lay in, and near the 200m rider W. Costin dropped her offside rein.
  • Iconic Star – raced wide and without cover throughout. When questioned regarding the performance, App. R. Dolan stated that the filly was caught wide without cover, raced greenly and did not settle throughout the early and middle stages. He added that on the home turn Iconic Star laid out before giving ground noticeably in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormality.
  • Saturn – soon after the start was hampered when Igniting, after commencing awkwardly, shifted out. Shortly afterwards was shifted in behind runners to obtain cover.
  • Yitai Synergy – When questioned regarding the performance of the filly, rider C. Brown stated that, after improving into the race full of running, when placed under pressure inside the 200m Yitai Synergy did not respond to his riding as he had anticipated. He added that when Movie Role improved to his inside, Yitai Synergy commenced to lay out away from that runner as it continued to weaken. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be slow to recover.

RACE 2: TAB Highway Handicap 1100m:

  • Equal Balance – as the start was effected, Equal Balance got its head down and, as a result, lost ground (5L). Equal Balance lost both front plates in the running.
  • Ori On Fire – Trainer Mr C. Crockett was fined $100 under AR140A for presenting the gelding without blinkers, part of its approved gear.
  • Manzana – When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider T. Berry stated that the gelding raced keenly outside the lead, particularly when Miss Fisher improved to his outside in the middle stages. He said that as a result Manzana was not able to finish off the race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be slow to recover.
  • Risk And Reward – began awkwardly and made contact with the offside barrier partition. In the early part of the straight was held up for clear running and near the 350m was shifted to the outside of Miss Fisher in an attempt to find clear running. Approaching the 300m Risk And Reward was disappointed for clear running between Miss Fisher and Invincible Tammy, which shifted in slightly, and was then held up behind Invincible Tammy, did not secure clear running from that point and went to the finish badly held up.
  • Camillo – from its wide draw, shifted behind runners in the early stages. From the 150m was held up behind Buddy Honest and was unable to be tested for the remainder of the event.
  • Buddy Honest – shortly after the start was bumped on the hindquarter by Risk And Reward, which shifted in.
  • Miss Fisher – raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event.
  • Carruthers – inside the 300m was steadied when disappointed for clear running between Risk And Reward and Fine Hero. Carruthers was then shifted to the outside to find clear running.
  • Andy's A Star – raced keenly in the early stages and making the first turn was inclined to lay out. Andy's A Star then raced wide and without cover until near the 600m. For some distance inside the 300m laid out away from Rioli when placed under pressure.
  • New York Philly – became fractious in the barrier and lunged forward, forcing the front partition open. The mare was then examined by the club's official veterinarian and deemed fit to race. When commencing to make ground in the straight, was steadied near the 150m when disappointed for clear running to the inside of Manzana, which was commencing to give ground. New York Philly was unable to be tested for the remainder of the event.

RACE 3: Events By ATC Handicap 1400m:

  • New Universe – slow to begin.
  • Sweet Deal – was inclined to lay out over the final 100 metres and made contact with Redouble approaching the 25m.
  • Onslaught – when the tempo steadied near the 800m, commenced to overrace and was checked from the heels of Bondi. New Universe, which was following, was steadied as a consequence. Rider C. Brown was cautioned in respect of the practice of steadying the tempo too quickly. Approaching the 100m raced in restricted room to the inside of Bondi and was inclined to lay in away from that runner.

RACE 4: Vale John Marshall 1400m:

  • Mr Tickets – Despite being ridden along in the early stages, did not show early speed. Approaching the 1100m Brother in Arms was steadied from the heels of Arancini and shifted out resulting in Mr Tickets being taken wider. Near the 700m was hampered when taken wider by Arancini, which shifted out and away from Choice Larga. Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event.

  • Nikkas 'n' A Twist – held up for clear running in the early part of the straight until near the 250m.

RACE 5: Hyland Boxing Day Sale Handicap 1800m:

  • Collateral – App. J. Van Overmeire stated that his instructions were to ride his mount quietly from its wide barrier. Trainer Mr B. Baker confirmed the instructions issued and advised that at its last start at Royal Randwick the gelding had raced more forward due to its favourable barrier draw. Mr Baker was reminded of his obligation to inform Stewards of any change in riding tactics.
  • Asterius – from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted behind runners in the early stages. When questioned regarding his riding, H. Bowman stated that his instructions were to ride the gelding quietly from its wide barrier in accordance with its usual racing pattern. He said that when making the home turn he elected to improve to the inside of Collateral to follow Island Missile, as he felt that to improve around Collateral would not allow Asterius to finish in the best possible place in the field. He further said that after being held up behind Temprado in the early part of the straight he was able to shift to the outside of that runner near the 250m whereby Asterius found clear running and finished the race off reasonably well. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormality.
  • Drochaid – near the 50m was steadied when crowded between Zip A Dee Doo Dah, which was taken out slightly by Live And Free, and Island Missile (C. Brown), which shifted in. C. Brown was advised to exercise more care.
  • Live And Free – from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted behind runners in the early stages. Held up for clear running for some distance near the 150m and approaching the 100m was shifted to the outside of Laussel to secure clear running.
  • Zip A Dee Doo Dah – slow to begin. Near the 350m made contact with Laussel resulting in both runners becoming slightly unbalanced.
  • Nai'a – At the request of rider J. Collett, Nai'a was examined behind the barriers by the club's official veterinarian and found to be lame in the near foreleg. Nai'a was a late withdrawal at 3.34 p.m. acting on veterinary advice. The Stewards ruled that all moneys invested on Nai'a be refunded in full and that all successful wagers made prior to 3.34 p.m. be subject to the following deductions in the face value of each ticket: 1 st Live And Free 15 cents win, 13 cents place; 2 nd Island Missile 15 cents place; 3 rd Turnberry 13 cents place. Trainer Mr J. Cummings was advised that a veterinary clearance must be provided prior to the mare's next race start.
  • Temprado – began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with Turnberry.

RACE 6: Christmas Classic (Listed) 1200m:

  • Husson Eagle – held up for clear running in the straight until near the 250m where it obtained clear running to the outside of Alizee.

Pride was advised that a veterinary clearance must be provided prior to the gelding's next race start.
  • Le Cordon Bleu – began awkwardly and made contact with Alizee.
  • Problem Solver – began awkwardly.

RACE 7: TAB Rewards Handicap 1600m:

  • Sir Plush – When questioned regarding his riding, J. Collett stated that, as notified to the Stewards, he was given the option to lead on the gelding if circumstances permitted. He said that, after commencing well, he rode his mount forward in accordance with his instructions and when he observed R. King, the rider of Arraignment, having to ride her mount to hold a forward position he elected to allow Sir Plush to continue to stride forward with a view to crossing to the lead. He stated that his decision to do this was influenced by his previous experience on the horse where Sir Plush had displayed a tendency to race keenly when restrained in the early stages. He further stated that after obtaining the lead Sir Plush travelled strongly before being able to finish the race off reasonably well.
  • Tip Top – from the outside barrier was steadied and shifted behind runners in the early stages.
  • Super Tycoon – slow to begin.
  • Reflectivity – App. B. Ryan advised that his instructions were to be handy on the gelding today and, with the solid early tempo, he was able to sit behind the early leaders. He said that when Arraignment settled on the rail, Reflectivity was left without cover, commenced to race fiercely and would not settle throughout the middle stages of the event. He stated that near the 700m he was reluctant to allow Reflectivity to stride forward in an endeavour to cover Arraignment as he felt that, should he commence this move, Reflectivity would be taken wider. He further said that from the 600m he elected to stride forward and, as he commenced to do so, Arraignment shifted out resulting in Reflectivity having to make the home turn three wide, and on straightening he elected to ride his mount conservatively to allow it to finish the race off as best it was able. He added that over the final 100 metres Reflectivity did not finish off as expected due to its racing manners and being taken wider from the 600m.
  • Arraignment – When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider R. King stated that her mount was not suited by being taken on in the lead and, as a consequence, Arraignment did not finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormality. Stable representative Ms H. Devlin advised that the gelding will now be spelled.

RACE 8: Australian Turf Club Handicap 1200m:

  • Blue Tycoon – had difficulty obtaining clear running for some distance near the 300m.
  • Nictock – began awkwardly, making contact with the offside partition, and as a result became momentarily unbalanced. Near the 350m was inconvenienced when crowded between Kapajack and Deprive, which shifted in slightly.
  • Junglized – Rider C. Reith stated that the gelding raced too keenly outside the lead and for this reason was unable to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Junglized to be slow to recover.
  • Isorich – slow to begin. Shortly after the start was crowded for room between After All That and Junglized, which shifted out after beginning awkwardly.
  • Pipeline – When questioned regarding Pipeline racing back in the field, R. Bayliss stated that he was instructed to ride the gelding where comfortable as it was resuming from a lengthy spell. He said that, in accordance with his instructions, he allowed his mount to settle where comfortable, which resulted in Pipeline racing towards the rear of the field with the early strong tempo.
  • Kapajack – slow to begin. Shortly after the start was crowded for room between Mad For Art and Deprive, which shifted in. Raced in restricted room between Niccolance and Nictock near the 350m.
