Top 5 Early Insights @ Royal Randwick

Published: 17 Sep 2015

Carnival Star - Doncaster winner Kermadec will be very hard to beat this weekend

You could be forgiven for being confused in the lead-up to Royal Randwick this weekend.

The George Main Stakes has been renamed after a toothpaste brand and the swirling showers haven't decided if they will land in Sydney's south-east before Saturday afternoon.

Will there be a Colgate White Stakes on a 'pasty' track? Only time will tell.

The Top 5 Early Insights for the day are listed below.

1 - Watching the Skies

The forecast rain in Sydney will make a big difference to the chances of many gallopers this weekend.

Race 2, the Bill Ritchie Handicap, is a perfect example.

The big-striding and one-paced RUDY will be hoping for a SOFT track, while Waller’s muscular HEART TESTA can sprint best if the track stays firm and dry.

Keep an eye on the forecast and chose your moment to have a bet.

Bill Ritchie Market. Suggested bets in bold

Hoping for wet weather - Rudy relishes a muddy Randwick track

2 - The Pride is Back

Once touted as the best sprinter in the land, TERRAVISTA returns this weekend to try and reclaim that crown.

He’s a bomb-proof sprinter at his best, while his rivals have a few question marks hanging over them.

HOT SNITZEL (doesn’t rate at his best over 1100m), BALL OF MUSCLE (possible off rails bias is a risk), DELECTATION (races keenly), SHIRAZ (not proven in this grade) and THAT’S A GOOD IDEA (doesn’t want any rain) will find it tough to beat Pride’s warrior.

The Shorts Market. Suggested bet in bold

Powerhouse sprinter - Terravista can handle any conditions over the sprint distances

3 – Gai’s Girls

The Coolmore Tea Rose Stakes is a race Gai will be desperate to win.

With PORNICHET not quite living up to expectations and a few other Carnival stars out injured, it is the filly’s grade in which she has had the most success.

KIMBERLEY STAR, FLAMBOYANT LASS and SEMPRE LIBERA are an impressive trio that could fight out the finish.

The Tea Rose Market. Suggested bets in bold

Star performer - Kimberley Star is one of an impressive group of Gai Waterhouse fillies

4 - Committing to Kermadec

Waller’s Doncaster winning four-year-old delivered two of the best runs in the Autumn and he looks to have come back in great form this Spring.

If HOOKED remains in the field, you can expect the tempo to be honest enough for him to show off his devastating finishing surge.

He’s ready to win third-up.

The George Main Market. Suggested bet in bold. Get a $100 bonus bet if your selection wins.

The best miler in town? - Kermadec takes on Royal Descent and Pornichet again over the Randwick mile

5 - Class Top of the Hill

The Hill Stakes over 2000m has a big field this year, mostly thanks to ‘Waller’s Army’ of middle-distance types. Half of the 18 acceptances are from the champion Kiwi trainer’s stable.

To find the winner, can we simply trust the Handicapper?

COMPLACENT (classy on-pacer), WHO SHOT THEBARMAN (swooper), BEATEN UP (tough on-pacer) and PREFERMENT (swooper - if the track isn’t wet) are the classiest horses in the race.

The George Main Market. Suggested bets in bold

Great training performance - O'Shea's patience with Complacent has reaped rewards
