Vet Notes

Star Boy (Race 1) – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be making an abnormal respiratory noise. Trainer Mr B Cavanough was advised a veterinary clearance including the results of an endoscopic examination would be required prior to Star Boy racing again.
Bella Success (Race 4) – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have lost its near hind plate in running.
Beijing Board (Race 6) – A post-race veterinary examination found the gelding to have blood present in the near side nostril. Trainer Mr R Litt was advised that Beijing Board would be required to barrier trial or gallop 1000m in the presence of a Steward prior to the gelding racing again.
Allzin (Race 6) – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be slow to recover.
Vihari (Race 6) – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be slow to recover.
Sweet Deal (Race 7) – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be slow to recover. Mr Thompson was asked to report back on the post-race condition of the mare in the days subsequent.
Green Sweet (Race 8) – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have lost its near hind plate.
Chalmers (Race 8) – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained a small laceration to the outside of the near hind cannon.
Generalissimo (Race 9) – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have lost its near fore plate in the barriers and to have sustained a minor laceration above the near fore fetlock.
Intueri (Race 9) – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be slow to recover and to have sustained a minor abrasion to the off fore pastern..

Penalties & Fines

Mr M Lakey, Trainer of Final Zero was fined the sum of $100 under AR140A for presenting the gelding without blinkers, which are a part of its approved gear.
Mr M Smith, Trainer of Dusk Falls was fined the sum of $100 under AR140B(2) for the late application to add ear muffs(pre-race) to the gelding's gear.
D McLellan, rider of Chalmers pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 500m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Dio D'oro which was taken in across the running of Turnberry which had to be steadied. D McLellan's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Monday 21 January 2019, at the expiration of a period of suspension he incurred at Cessnock on 8 January 2019, and to expire on Saturday 2 February 2019 on which day he may ride.

Summary of Races

RACE 1: January Handicap 1000m

Star Boy – When questioned rider J Ford confirmed his instructions were to take up a more forward position but after jumping only fairly, he elected to ride his mount more conservatively. He added that when Star Fall maintained its position one off the fence, he was then caught three wide and as a result was obliged to shift back behind runners to obtain cover. He added that when under pressure in the straight Star Boy laid in and on pulling up made an abnormal respiratory noise. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be making an abnormal respiratory noise. Trainer Mr B Cavanough was advised a veterinary clearance including the results of an endoscopic examination would be required prior to Star Boy racing again.
Miss Invincible – When questioned rider C Reith advised that he endeavoured to take a sit outside the early leader Happy Mo but the filly would not settle and raced very keenly. He added for this reason he was obligated to allow Miss Invincible to stride forward of Happy Mo approaching the 600m. He further added when under pressure in the straight Miss Invincible was unable to finish off strongly due to its racing manners. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
Acquittal – Slow to begin. Raced keenly in the middle stages.
Exceltic – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.
Highway Sixtysix – Slow to begin. In the middle stages was inclined to race keenly.
Riviera – Shortly after the start was hampered by Miss Invincible which shifted in.

RACE 2: TAB Highway Handicap 1600m

Central Witness – Slow to begin.
Fui San – Crowded on jumping by Smart As which shifted out. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
Haames – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages. When questioned regarding his riding from the 600m and in particular the reason he elected to shift to the inside of Guided rider P Graham stated that his instructions had been to settle where comfortable but had anticipated settling worse than midfield. He said that throughout the middle stages of the event Haames travelled well but when the tempo increased, he was obliged to make some use of his mount in an attempt to improve. He added that as his mount was not travelling well enough to shift out to improve, he elected to remain racing behind Guided and when that runner commenced to shift out making the home turn, he endeavoured to improve to its inside in order to secure clear running. He further added that when Guided was straightened by its rider K O'Hara he had to steady his mount when disappointed for clear running and then shifted to that runner's outside near the 350m to secure clear running. He added that in the early part of the straight when shifting out to secure clear running he was required to straighten his mount to avoid interfering with Tiara Road and over the final 300m he was able to fully test the gelding where it finished the race off reasonably well. After considering all the evidence Stewards found that P Graham had made an error in judgement in not endeavouring to shift to the outside of Guided approaching the 500m when there was an opportunity to do so which would have enabled Haames to secure clear running sooner than what it did. In electing not to issue a charge against P Graham under the rules Stewards found in the circumstances that his actions were not blameworthy having regard to the explanation offered by P Graham. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
Mina Harker – Slow to begin. Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event.
Biodynamic – From a wide draw was shifted behind runners in the early stages. Near the 150m was inconvenienced when crowded between Fui San which shifted in slightly and Tiara Road which shifted out slightly.
Guided – When the pace steadied near the 1100m commenced to race keenly and was checked from the heels of Delude. Guided then shifted out and hampered Central Witness.

RACE 3: The Aviary @ Royal Randwick Sprint 1200m

Lisdoonvarna – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Co-Trainer Ms A Turner advised that Lisdoonvarna would now be spelled.
Pumpkin Pie – Lost its near fore plate near the 150m.
Taniko – Knuckled on jumping, shifted in and made contact with Pumpkin Pie. Shortly after the start was buffeted between Pumpkin Pie and Ghostly and lost ground. Was briefly held up for clear running in the early part of the straight and near the 300m was shifted to the outside of Sikhing Glory to obtain clear running.
Roman Typhoon – When questioned regarding the gelding racing more forward today App B Ryan stated that he was instructed to ensure his mount began well from its wide barrier and take up a more forward position, potentially in the lead. Trainer Ms J Bowen was reminded of her obligation to inform Stewards of any change of tactics.

RACE 4: 2019 Membership Handicap 1500m

Hussterical – When questioned rider T Marquand advised that the mare travelled well outside the leader but was disappointing in its failure to finish its race off in the straight. He added in his view the mare may have come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Co-Trainer Mr A Bott undertook to report to the Stewards on the future race plans of Hussterical.
Letter To Juliette – Leaving the 1000m Final Zero commenced to race keenly and shifted out from the heels of Hussterical resulting in Letter To Juliette being hampered and taken wider. Letter To Juliette was then obliged to race wide and without cover throughout the middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
Sweet Victory – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.
Strome – Held up for clear running until the 300m.
Toryjoy – Overraced in the early stages.
Bella Success – Was held up for clear running in the early part of the straight as it endeavoured to obtain a narrow run between Hussterical and Laussel. Bella Success was not able not secure completely clear running until inside the 200m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have lost its near hind plate in running.
Extreme Bliss – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages. Held up for clear running until the 300m.
Seahampton – Near the 600m was steadied from the heels of Final Zero (J Stanley) which shifted in when not quite clear. J Stanley was advised to exercise more care. When questioned rider G Schofield advised his mount was inconvenienced in the middle stages due to Final Zero shifting ground but in his opinion was still disappointing as it did not run on as he had expected. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth was asked to report to the Stewards on the post-race condition of Seahampton.
Final Zero – Trainer Mr M Lakey was fined the sum of $100 under AR140A for presenting the gelding without blinkers, which are a part of its approved gear.

RACE 5: Summer Spring 1000m

Badajoz – When questioned regarding his riding of the gelding, rider C Reith advised that as notified by the Stewards his instructions were to be more forward today. He added that whilst his intention was to be more forward, he expected Jungle Edge to lead at a reasonably solid tempo and he would trail that runner in the race. He stated that after commencing well he was able to take up a forward position as anticipated, but when Jungle Edge set a slower tempo than he expected and appeared to be well held together by its rider, Badajoz raced keenly despite his efforts to come back and position behind Jungle Edge. C Reith stated that throughout the middle stages Jungle Edge continued to maintain a moderate tempo and this resulted in Badajoz improving to race head and head with Jungle Edge which was not his intention at that point of the race. After considering C Reith's explanation and having reviewed the sectional times of the event, Stewards were comfortably satisfied there was no preconceived tactic to position his mount to contest the lead with Jungle Edge. Stable representative Mr D Beadman confirmed it was not the intention to position Badajoz as it was today.
Marsupial – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages. When questioned rider G Schofield advised that he settled at the rear of the field as anticipated, however Marsupial was not able to make ground on the leading division particularly with the slow early tempo of the event and when the race developed into a sprint home. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
Frolic – Slow to begin.

RACE 6: TAB.COM.AU Handicap 2400m

The start of the event was delayed slightly due to a malfunction with the starting mechanism.

Follow Suit – Slow to begin. Leaving the 500m improved into a narrow run between Vihari and Devil's Lair (G Schofield) and shortly after was buffeted between those runners when Devil's Lair shifted out slightly. G Schofield was advised to exercise more care.
Solo Mission – On jumping was bumped by Dusk Falls and blundered and became unbalanced as a consequence. Solo Mission was then shifted behind runners in the early stages.
Beijing Board – A post-race veterinary examination found the gelding to have blood present in the near side nostril. Trainer Mr R Litt was advised that Beijing Board would be required to barrier trial or gallop 1000m in the presence of a Steward prior to the gelding racing again.
Earth Angel – For some distance near the 500m was held up on the heels of He's Imposing.
Devil's Lair – Approaching the 2000m was steadied from the heels of He's Imposing (J Innes Jnr) which shifted in when not quite clear. J Innes was advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground. When questioned rider G Schofield stated that in his view the gelding was not suited to the strong early tempo of the event as it was under pressure a long way from the finish. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
Dusk Falls – Trainer Mr M Smith was fined the sum of $100 under AR140B(2) for the late application to add ear muffs(pre-race) to the gelding's gear. Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped Solo Mission. When questioned rider L Meech advised that as notified by the Stewards her instructions were to lead today and attempt to establish a break on the field, as connections considered it was one pace at its last start and it may benefit from a genuine tempo. She said that in the early stages she was required to make use of Dusk Falls to comply with her instructions and after crossing Yuralla Boy near the 1800m, Dusk Falls raced keenly in the lead. She added that whilst she was aware, Dusk Falls had established a sizeable lead on the field in the middle stages, she indicated she had endeavoured to reduce the tempo, but her mount did not respond to her efforts to do so. L Meech further added that from the 800m her mount became under pressure and for this reason she elected to commence to ride along in an endeavour to establish an increased margin on the field, however Dusk Falls as it approached the 600m commenced to weaken and accordingly she did not test her mount fully in the straight. She added in her view Dusk Falls would be better suited to being ridden more conservatively. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
Allzin – Slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be slow to recover.
Vihari – As S Lisnyy was injured Stewards permitted App J Duggan to be the replacement rider of Vihari when no other senior rider was available at the weight. Near the 1800m was steadied when briefly crowded by Devil's Lair (G Schofield) which shifted in. G Schofield was advised to exercise more care. When questioned rider J Duggan advised that the mare was stirred up prior to the event and then in the early stages of the event raced keenly and would not settle. She added that near the 1800m her mount was hampered when Devil's Lair shifted in slightly but after this point settled reasonably well, however, was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be slow to recover.
Curata Princess – Approaching the 600m was steadied when crowded between Vihari and Follow Suit (App S Weatherley) which after being taken out slightly by Earth Angel (T Marquand) then shifted out away from that runner. Both T Marquand and App S Weatherley were advised to exercise more care.

RACE 7: Australian Turf Club Handicap 1400m

Strathmore – Slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
Sweet Deal – When questioned rider J Ford stated he anticipated being more forward than his settling position however it failed to show sufficient speed to race prominently. He said that when caught wide in the early stages and with no prospect of being able to find a position closer to the rail, he elected to endeavour to initially follow Organza with the hope that After All That would position on the rail. He said that when After All That maintained a one-off position, he was obliged to come back further behind that runner. so as to obtain cover. He added he was disappointed in the manner in which Sweet Deal finished the race off and said the only real excuse for the performance was that the mare may not have been suited ridden conservatively today. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be slow to recover. Mr Thompson was asked to report back on the post-race condition of the mare in the days subsequent.
Plaisir – Slow to begin. Laid out under pressure in the straight.
Schubert – From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.
Brazen – Raced keenly in the early stages.

RACE 8: #Theraces Handicap 1500m

Turnberry – D McLellan (Chalmers) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 500m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Dio D'oro which was taken in across the running of Turnberry which had to be steadied. D McLellan's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Monday 21 January 2019, at the expiration of a period of suspension he incurred at Cessnock on 8 January 2019, and to expire on Saturday 2 February 2019 on which day he may ride. Turnberry was held up for clear running in the early part of the straight and near the 350m improved into a narrow run between Chalmers and Brother In Arms where there was insufficient room resulting in Turnberry making heavy contact with the hindquarters of Brother In Arms resulting in Brother In Arms becoming badly unbalanced. R Dolan was reprimanded under AR137(a) and was advised to ensure there is sufficient room when attempting runs.
High Mist – Slow to begin.
King Tomlola – Near the 100m when inclined to lay out was steadied from the heels of Thy Kingdom Come (L Meech) which shifted in when not quite clear. L Meech was advised to exercise more care. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
Green Sweet – Was held up for clear running until near the 200m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have lost its near hind plate.
Dio D'Oro – Rider T Marquand advised that with the colt stepping up in distance today he had been instructed to endeavour to take up a handy position. He added that after commencing well Dio D'oro showed sufficient speed without having to be ridden along to take up a position behind the leaders.
Eagle Bay – Slow to begin. When questioned regarding his riding of the gelding rider J Ford stated that first up today, he expected to settle in a rearward position and his mount travelled comfortably throughout the early and middle stages. He added when the tempo increased from the 600m Eagle Bay did not respond to his riding and for some distance he had concerns that there must be something amiss with the gelding when it did not respond. He stated when he did not identify any noticeable condition with Eagle Bay he continued to place his mount under hands and heels riding in the straight whilst only receiving a limited response but over the final 100m Eagle Bay commenced to finish the race off strongly whereby he was able to fully test the gelding to the line.
Thy Kingdom Come – Rider L Meech advised that her instructions were to go forward but Thy Kingdom Come pulled hard in the early stages and hung out on the first turn. She added when King Tomlola maintained the lead in the middle stages Thy Kingdom Come was further disadvantaged and as a result did not finish the race off as well as expected.
Chalmers – Slow to begin. Raced wide and without cover until approaching the 500m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained a small laceration to the outside of the near hind cannon.
Brother In Arms – Slow to begin.
Devlann – Shortly after the start was crowded between Turnberry and Green Sweet both of which shifted ground.

RACE 9: Autumn Carnival On Sale Handicap 1800m

Astoria – From a wide barrier was shifted in behind runners. On straightening was bumped by Live And Free which shifted out when commencing to improve.
Collateral – Was replated behind the barrier as the gelding shifted its off fore plate enroute to the start. Collateral underwent a veterinary examination and was deemed suitable to race.
Reneged – From a wide barrier was shifted in behind runners.
Dalmatia Prince – Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event.
Mutarakem – From a wide barrier was shifted in behind runners.
Generalissimo – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have lost its near fore plate in the barriers and to have sustained a minor laceration above the near fore fetlock.
So You Win – From a wide barrier was shifted in behind runners. Hung in under pressure over the final 300m.
Intueri – Knuckled on jumping. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be slow to recover and to have sustained a minor abrasion to the off fore pastern.
