Vet Notes

  • Seven Rays (Race 1) - A veterinary clearance is required prior to being permitted to race again.
  • Bonito (Race 2) - A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have a slow recovery and lame off hind. A veterinary clearance is required prior to being permitted to race again.
  • Ulmann (Race 3) - A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery and the gelding was suffering heat stress.
  • Flying Krupt (Race 6) -  A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery. Stewards will follow up with the stable regarding Flying Krupt.
  • Ginas Hope (Race 6) -  A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery. Stewards will follow up with the stable regarding Ginas Hope.
  • Im Wesley (Race 7) - A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering mild heat stress.

Penalties & Fines

  • Jason Maskiell (Call Me Handsome) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provision of AR137(a). The careless riding being that near the 1000 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of Cabeza De Vaca resulting in that gelding having to check to avoid the heels of Call Me Handsome. J Maskiell had his licence to ride in races suspended for a total of ten meetings to commence midnight 17 January, 2019 and to expire midnight 26 January, 2019. (4 metro, 6 provincial). In assessing penalty, Stewards were of the view that the incident qualified for the mid-range category of carelessness and took into account his guilty plea and excellent record.

Summary of Races

Race 1 THE ARBOUR PLATE - 1000 metres:

  • Cassius Slow to begin.
  • Piscean Began awkwardly.
  • Biggie Raced ungenerously in the early stages.
  • Microphone Lay in under pressure.
  • Seven Rays Rider Dean Yendall could offer no explanation for the performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame left foreleg. A veterinary clearance is required prior to being permitted to race again.

Race 2 SUMMER AT FLEMINGTON HANDICAP - 1200 metres:

  • Sweet Jazz Lost the off fore plate on leaving the mounting yard. Re-plated on arrival at the barrier. This delayed the start of the race.
  • Vivi Valentina Bounded at the start.
  • Angel Lass Unbalanced at the start when bumped by Sweet Jazz, which shifted out.
  • Jay Jay DAr Slow to begin.
  • Melveen Raced keenly in the early stages.
  • Bonito Rider Dwayne Dunn reported the filly felt amiss in its action late in the race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have a slow recovery and lame off hind. A veterinary clearance is required prior to being permitted to race again.
  • First Diamond Rider Luke Currie reported that the filly was inexperienced racing in the straight 1200 metres. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.

Race 3 NOMINATE NOW FOR THE ALL-STAR MILE - 1600 metres:

  • Aloft (IRE) Slow to begin.
  • Unrealistic Slow to begin, then tightened for room between Torgersen (NZ) and Guizot (IRE), both of which shifted ground.
  • Ulmann Raced keenly in the early stages. App Ethan Brown reported his mount would be better suited with more pace in the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery and the gelding was suffering heat stress.
  • So Si Bon Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
  • Adirondack Raced ungenerously during the early stages.

Race 4 FURLONG BAR HANDICAP - 1400 metres:

  • Blinder Fractious in the barrier, reared. Underwent a veterinary examination and was deemed suitable to race. Raced three wide without cover.
  • Racorza Began awkwardly and was slow into stride.
  • Happily To Be (NZ) Got its head up in the middle stages when over racing. Led and weakened from the 200 metres. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality. Stewards will follow up with the stable regarding Happily To Be.
  • Symphonette Lay in under pressure from the 300 metres.
  • Kaplumpich Steadied near the 1000 metres to avoid the heels of Symphonette. Eased at the 250 metres when tightened for room between OTauto, which initially lay in and Blinder, which shifted out slightly. App Ben Allen reported his mount raced dour and may be better suited over further distance. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.

Race 5 THE CLUB STAND HANDICAP - 2000 metres:

  • Masculino Slow to begin.
  • Shoreham Trainer Saab Hasan notified Stewards that connections will consider retiring the gelding after the disappointing performance today.

Race 6 BLUEGRASS BAR TROPHY - 1400 metres:

Prior to the declaration of correct weight Damian Lane (Naantali), 2nd placegetter, viewed the stewards' video before deciding not to lodge an objection. It was established that near the 700 metres Naantali (NZ) was taken out off its course by Set To Sparkle, which shifted to the outside of Amortentia.

  • Fudged Began awkwardly and was then tightened for room by Flying Krupt, which shifted out.
  • Hussys Glow Began awkwardly.
  • Set To Sparkle Began awkwardly.
  • Flying Krupt Began awkwardly. Over raced passing the 1000 metres and when racing keenly was steadied off the heels of Naantali (NZ). App Kayla Crowther reported her mount may have come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery. Stewards will follow up with the stable regarding Flying Krupt.
  • Twitchy Frank Knuckled shortly after the start after shifting out and making contact with Naantali (NZ).
  • Sister Kitty Mac - Began awkwardly.
  • Jester Halo Raced three wide without cover.
  • Amortentia - Hung in from the 400 metres.
  • Ginas Hope App Lachlan King reported the mare raced ungenerously in the early stages, failed to respond to his riding and may benefit with the addition of blinkers. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery. Stewards will follow up with the stable regarding Ginas Hope.

Race 7 PADDOCK BAR PLATE - 1100 metres:

  • Rocket Tommy Change of tactics - to be ridden more forward. Dislodged app Fred Kersley en-route to the barrier. Underwent a veterinary examination and was passed suitable to race. F Kersley underwent a medical examination and was passed fit to ride. Began awkwardly, then restrained and settled mid-field. F Kersley reported the gelding was then disappointing.
  • Princeton Spirit (NZ) Began awkwardly.
  • Sams Image Began awkwardly.
  • Stellar Collision Hung out.
  • Order Of Command Eased near the 50 metres to avoid the heels of Stellar Collision, which was hanging out. Rider Damien Oliver reported the gelding was a little disappointing when up in class today. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality other than a graze to the right fore knee.
  • Sir Donald A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.
  • Im Wesley - A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering mild heat stress.

Race 8 CHESTER MANIFOLD STAKES - 1400 metres:

  • Call Me Handsome (IRE) Fractious in the barrier. Underwent a veterinary examination and was passed suitable to race. Began awkwardly.
  • Cool Chap- Made heavy contact with Turnitaround at the start. Held up for clear running from the 200 metres until near the 100 metres.
  • Turnitaround Made heavy contact with Cool Chap at the start.
  • Manolo Blahniq (NZ) Raced three wide without cover.
  • RockNGold Tightened for room shortly after the start by George Patton (USA), which shifted out. Steadied at the 800 metres to avoid heels. Held up for clear running from the 400 metres until shifting out near the 150 metres.
  • Cabeza De Vaca Hung out approaching the first turn near the 1200 metres. Checked at the 1000 metres. Near the 300 metres, when giving ground, steadied when racing tight on the inside of George Patton (USA), which, when racing awkwardly in restricted room to the inside of Mr Money Bags, which was laying in and then being taken in by Manolo Blahniq (Dwayne Dunn). D Dunn was reprimanded and notified to exercise more care. Rider Stephen Baster reported his mount did not appreciate the Melbourne direction of racing. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality. Stewards will follow up with the stable regarding Cabeza De Vaca.
  • Holbien Hampered at the 1100 metres when bumped by Call Me Handsome (IRE) (Jason Maskiell), which shifted in before being straightened. J Maskiell was reprimanded after taking into account that he had attempted to straighten his mount.
  • Mr Money Bags Hung in and near the 300 metres and was steadied when tightened for room between Manolo Blahniq and George Patton.
  • George Patton (USA) Eased at the 1100 metres to avoid the heels of Takedown, which had shifted in. Raced in restricted room for several strides near the 300 metres.
  • Illustrious Lad Lost the right front plate.

  • Canelo On arrival at the track was re-shod in front and passed suitable to race.
  • Buckler Began awkwardly.
  • Wind Force Tightened for room at the start by Gamblers Girl, which after beginning awkwardly, shifted out away from Hay Bale, which had also shifted out.
  • Got The Moves Began awkwardly.
  • Reincarnate Slow to begin. Lost the right front plate.
  • Kyzamba Lost the right front plate.
  • Sir Kalahad A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality. Stewards will follow up with the stable regarding Sir Kalahad.
