Horse of the Week: Rebel Dane

Published: 22 Sep 2015

Back in the top flight - Rebel Dane won again after two years out of the winner's circle

It was a long time between drinks, but REBEL DANE finally saluted the judge at Randwick on Saturday.

Following his tie-back operation for breathing problems and some successful hit outs on the training track, there was a lot of focus on how the son of California Dane would perform in The Shorts under 'race pressure'.

Brenton Avdulla had the stallion perfectly poised to strike on the turn, but many still would have questioned his will to win. A long surge to the line proved the doubters wrong; his first victory since winning the Rupert Clarke two years ago.

Recovering from surgery to win a Carnival feature race makes REBEL DANE this week's Horse of the Week.

Quick Facts

  • He is heading for the Manikato Stakes at Mooney Valley on 23rd October
  • This was his first win in a race since the Rupert Clarke Stakes two years ago
  • He was once thought of as a better colt than Queen Elizabeth winner It's A Dundeel, starting shorter in the market than him in the Group One Royal Randwick Guineas (It's A Dundeel came 1st, REBEL DANE came 4th)
  • His breathing problems seem to be mended, so he may lose the tag of being 'Unreliable' soon
  • Three of his six victories were in photo finishes!
