Vet Notes

  • Jesta Dreama (Race 3) -  A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a slow recovery and heat stress and the stable confirmed that the gelding would now be spelled.
  • Brazen Brando (Race 4) -  A post race veterinary examination revealed the colt to have heat stress and a slow recovery.
  • Unique Bambino (Race 4)- after the running of the race the RV veterinary surgeon reported that the gelding had heat stress.
  • Nomothaj (Race 6) - A post race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be lame in the near hind leg and will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

Penalties & Fines

  • Michael Poy (Vengeur Masque (IRE)) - was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a), the carelessness being that near the 1800m he permitted his mount to shift in thereby taking Al Galayel (IRE) in onto Second Bullet which was tightened for room and had to be steadied. Michael Poy had his permit to ride in races suspended for a period to commence at midnight February 2nd and to expire at midnight February 9th, a total of eight race meetings (three metropolitan, five provincial). In assessing penalty Stewards took into account his guilty plea and that the carelessness was in the low range.

Summary of Races 

Race 1 - Cape Grim Beef Plate - 1100m:

  • Bold Arial - began awkwardly. Raced ungenerously through the early and middle stages. Rider Damian Lane was reminded of his obligation to ride all of his mounts out fully hands and heels to the finish. Damian Lane could offer no explanation for the performance, which was below expectations. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities other than a slow recovery.
  • Embrace Me (NZ) - held up for clear running from the 400m until approaching the 100m. Laid inwards in the straight.

Race 2 - The Mary Bell Handicap - 1100m:

  • Miss Vixen - slow to begin.
  • Queen Annabel - began awkwardly.
  • Tiara Star - rider Jamie Kah reported that her mount raced flat. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 3 - Le Pine Funerals Handicap - 1400m:

  • Jesta Dreama - began awkwardly. Raced wide without cover. Apprentice Michael Poy stated that his mount raced flat and may be at the end of its preparation. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a slow recovery and heat stress and the stable confirmed that the gelding would now be spelled.
  • Groundbreak - steadied at the 300m to avoid the heels of Kapaulenko (Fred Kersley) which shifted out; Fred Kersley was notified to exercise more care. Rider Dwayne Dunn reported that his mount was reluctant to race inside of other runners and once he obtained clear running over the concluding stages the gelding ran on well.
  • Reincarnate - rider Ben Melham could offer no explanation for the performance. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 4 - Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Preview (C&G) (Listed) - 1000m:

  • Logans Blade - after being unruly and dislodging its rider Beau Mertens, was a late withdrawal by order of Stewards at 2.41pm when Beau Mertens was stood down by the doctor. All monies bet for a win and/or place and concession betting on Logans Blade to be refunded. All successful bets on horses prior to 2.41pm are subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of the ticket: win bets - 1 cent, place bets (for winner) - 2 cents, place bets (for 2nd) - 1 cent, place bets (for 3rd) - 2 cents and 1 cent for double bets.
  • Brazen Brando - began awkwardly. When questioned in relation to his ride on the colt, rider Regan Bayliss explained that from the wide barrier he settled towards the rear of the field rather than urge his mount along and be caught wide early, and that when ridden further forward in a recent trial, the colt had failed to finish off. He added that on straightening he was in two minds as to whether he should shift out to take a run to the outside of Tempo (NZ) however at this stage he was caught inside the heels of Tempo (NZ) so he elected to ride forward to get on the back of Microphone. He further added that he was then unable to obtain clear running passing the 100m until approaching the winning post. Trainer Phillip Stokes confirmed the instructions and added that the colt had failed to finish off at a recent trial when ridden forward. A post race veterinary examination revealed the colt to have heat stress and a slow recovery.
  • Exeter - slow to begin.
  • Lodestar - slow to begin. Rider Craig Williams stated that he was disappointed with the performance however could offer no explanation. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities other than a slow recovery.
  • Auxin - disappointed for clear running between Microphone and I Am Immortal at the 300m before then laying in behind I Am Immortal.
  • Tempo (NZ) - rider Stephen Baster could offer no explanation for the performance. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities other than a slow recovery.
  • Unique Bambino - after the running of the race the RV veterinary surgeon reported that the gelding had heat stress.

Race 5 - Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies) (Group 3) - 1000m:

  • Andrassy Avenue - bounded at the start and was slow to begin.
  • Dama Rapida - began awkwardly and was slow to begin.
  • Lobster Noodles - began awkwardly. Changed stride and shifted out abruptly near the 800m and became unbalanced. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
  • Westport - eased at the 800m to avoid the heels of Pretty Brazen, which was taken in by Be Brilliant, which was shifting in away from Jedastar. Eased at the 400m when tightened for room between Catch Me and Biscara which initially shifted out to avoid Anaheed which had also shifted.
  • Anaheed - at the 400m became unbalanced when reluctant to hold its position to the inside of Be Brilliant. Had difficulty obtaining clear running from the 300m.
  • Be Brilliant - weakened quickly from the 200m and was eased down; rider Michael Walker could offer no explanation other than the filly did not run out the 1000m. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 6 - Catanachs Jewellers Handicap - 1400m:

  • Nomothaj - began awkwardly. Near the 200m was steadied when tightened for room between Dgrammy (Liam Riordan) which had shifted in slightly after being brushed by Goldifox, and Starouz (Zac Spain) which had shifted out slightly after being disappointed for clear running to the inside of Magnossiva. Stewards notified apprentices Liam Riordan and Zac Spain to exercise more care when in similar circumstances in future. A post race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be lame in the near hind leg and will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
  • Marston - came together with Dgrammy at the start.
  • Dgrammy - came together with Marston at the start.
  • Goldifox - eased passing the 1200m to avoid the heels of Social Spin which was shifting in.
  • Piemonte - over-raced through the early and middle stages. Rider Jye McNeil stated that after over-racing, his mount failed to finish the race off. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities other than a slow recovery.
  • Social Spin - raced three wide without cover.
  • Starouz - held up for clear running from the 300m until approaching the 100m.

Race 7 - Ladbrokes Handicap - 2000m:

  • Vengeur Masque (IRE) - shifted in and made contact with Al Galayel (IRE) at the start.
  • Al Galayel (IRE) - near the 1800m was taken in onto Second Bullet by Vengeur Masque (IRE).
  • Second Bullet - near the 1800m was tightened for room and steadied. Had difficulty obtaining clear running over the concluding stages.
  • Kiwia - had difficulty obtaining clear running over the concluding stages.
  • Lamborghini (NZ) - apprentice Tahlia Hope could offer no explanation for the performance. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 8 - Ladbrokes Odds Boost Handicap - 1700m:

  • Adirondack - late withdrawal on veterinary advice at 11.50am.
  • Torgersen (NZ) - connections advised would be ridden further back; restrained at the start and settled at the rear of the field. Raced keenly throughout.
  • Wenner - when giving ground, was eased at the 150m when tightened for room between Cool Chap, which obtained a narrow run to its inside, and Magnapal which was taken in slightly by Emperors Way. Rider Jye McNeil was of the view that the gelding may be at the end of its preparation. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 9 - John Dillon Stakes (Listed) - 1400m:

  • Theanswermyfriend - slow to begin. Over-raced through the early and middle stages. When giving ground approaching the 50m was steadied when crowded for room between Sikandarabad (IRE) and Arbeitsam which had shifted out slightly to avoid the heels of Chamois Road.
  • Manolo Blahniq (NZ) - began awkwardly. Held up for clear running from the 300m and until near the 100m.
  • Im A Princess - began awkwardly and was slow into stride.
  • Holbien - disappointed for clear running from the 300m and went to the line not fully tested.
