Stewards' Summary @ Royal Randwick

A summary of the Royal Randwick Stewards' Report for Saturday 17th October is shown below, including the Unlucky Runners, Vet Notes, Penalties and Fines. For the full report, visit the Racing NSW website.

 

Unlucky Runners

  • Lieder (Race 2) – which was overracing making the first turn, came together with Doc Holliday, as they contested a position on the back of Montauk in the one out line. After initial being directed in Montauk, Schopenhauer (J Ford) continued to shift in, which resulted in Lieder making contact with the rail and becoming badly unbalanced passing the 1500m. In the incident Lieder struck the heels of Schopenhauer. In issuing a reprimand to J Ford, the Stewards acknowledged that there had been substantial contribution to the incident from Montauk and also that Schopenhauer did not immediately straighten when J Ford attempted to correct his mount.
  • Doc Holliday (Race 2) – making the first turn was obliged to race three wide when Lieder and Doc Holliday came together.
  • Hellbent (Race 6) – At the 800m was crowded and had to be restrained when tightened for room by Sooboog, which shifted in. In the incident Hellbent came into contact with Secret Saga, which then laid out, which exacerbated the tightening to Hellbent. C Reith (Sooboog) was told he must ensure that riders to his inside have the room to which they are entitled. On the home turn had to be restrained when awkwardly placed on the heels of Secret Saga, which continued to lay out. Held up entering the straight and hampered Secret Saga when it shifted out passing the 200m. Rider T Angland was told to exercise more care.
  • Atmospherical (Race 7) – when questioned, T Huet stated he was under instructions to ride his mount with cover and, when he took hold of his mount on jumping away, it threw its head up and raced ungenerously.
  • Sasenkile (Race 8) – The gelding, which was fractious in the stall, on jumping away spun around, reared over backwards, dislodging its rider App. S Lisnyy. The Stewards ruled that Sasenkile must trial to their satisfaction and they further recommended that the crossover nose band, which was added to today's gear, be removed. 
  • Tree Of Jesse (Race 9) – was forced to race wide without cover throughout.

 

Vet Notes

  • Divine Action (Race 1) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed evidence of being shin sore. Trainer Mr G Portelli was advised a veterinary clearance would be required before the filly's next race start.
  • Feast For Eyes (Race 2) – A post-race veterinary examination revealed an old healing laceration to the lateral aspect of the off-hind cannon with some associated swelling. Stable foreman Mr P Muscutt stated that the injury occurred over a week ago and Feast For Eyes had shown no lameness and had missed no work. He was nevertheless reminded of his obligation under AR140 to report any condition that may affect the running of a horse in a race.
  • Flash In The Dark (Race 4) – A post-race veterinary examination revealed a deep laceration to the near-side hock. Trainer Mr K Dryden advised he would now remove the blinkers and would report back on the future race plans for the filly.
  • Gamblestown (Race 5) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery.
  • Flippant (Race 6) – a post-race veterinary examination of the filly, which weakened after racing wide, revealed it to be displaying cardiac arrhythmia subsequent to the race and a laceration to the off-fore heel bulb. Co-trainer Mr Paul Snowden was advised that the stable must produce the results of a satisfactory ECG and that Flippant must trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards. Mr Snowden reported the filly will be freshened up.
  • La Amistad (Race 8) – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be mildly lame in the near foreleg. Co-trainer Mr M Hawkes was advised he must produce a veterinary certificate prior to La Amistad racing again.
  • Sasenkile (Race 8) – A post-race veterinary examination revealed a laceration to the off-fore tendon.

 

Penalties and Fines

  • App. R Hutchings on Lady Le Fay (Race 3) – As App. R Hutchings was overweight, App. W Costin was substituted as the rider of the mare. App. R Hutchings' permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 25 October 2015 and to expire on Sunday, 1 November 2015, on which day he may ride. In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account App. Hutchings' poor record with regard to being overweight. Approaching the 600m, when bumped by Teronado, had to be steadied away from the heels of Diametric.
  • Mr G Bennett Trainer of Invienna (Race 4) – off-hind replated after arriving on course. Trainer Mr G Bennett was fined $100 under AR141B(3) for unsatisfactory plating. Jumped away awkwardly.
  • App. R Bayliss on Hesco Gold (Race 4) – App. R Bayliss, rider of Eccitare, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that he permitted his mount to shift out when being ridden along approaching the 200m when insufficiently clear of Hesco Gold, which was commencing to improve into a run between Eccitare and Melberra Star. App. Bayliss' permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 25 October 2015 and to expire on Saturday, 7 November 2015, on which day he may ride.

 

Race-by-Race Summary

RACE 1: City Tattersalls Club Victory Vein Plate 1000m

  • Flash Fibian – slow to begin. Hung out badly at the 600m and had to be restrained by its rider T Angland, who became unbalanced when the colt had to be checked off the heels of Pyx Chamber for a number of strides. In the incident Bliss Point was checked when taken out across the heels of Divine Action. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr B Murray advised that Flash Fibian will be spelled. Stewards ruled that the colt must trial prior to its next race start.
  • Reverence – jumped awkwardly. Hampered at the 600m when Flash Fibian was checked.
  • Bliss Point – shortly after the start was inconvenienced by Reverence, which shifted in. Checked at the 600m when taken out across the heels of Divine Action.
  • Pyx Chamber – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Divine Action – a post-race veterinary examination revealed evidence of being shin sore. Trainer Mr G Portelli was advised a veterinary clearance would be required before the filly's next race start.

RACE 2: City Tattersalls Club Spring Handicap 1600m

  • Montauk – Blundered on jumping away. Lost its near-hind plate in running.
  • Lieder – which was overracing making the first turn, came together with Doc Holliday, as they contested a position on the back of Montauk in the one out line.   • Schopenhauer – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 3: Bartier Perry Lawyers Handicap 1600m

  • Lady Le Fay – As App. R Hutchings was overweight, App. W Costin was substituted as the rider of the mare. App. R Hutchings' permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 25 October 2015 and to expire on Sunday, 1 November 2015, on which day he may ride. In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account App. Hutchings' poor record with regard to being overweight. Approaching the 600m, when bumped by Teronado, had to be steadied away from the heels of Diametric.
  • Teronado – jumped awkwardly, shifted in and bumped the hindquarter of Diametric.
  • Orion Love – slow to begin. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, T Huet stated, from his wide draw when it appeared he would be caught wide in the early stages, he elected to go to the rear of the field and consequently settled further back than anticipated. He added, with blinkers and crossed nose band applied today, his mount did not travel well throughout the event and was most disappointing in its failure to finish the race. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr L Baudron stated, in his view, the mare did not appreciate the quick back up and, in addition, was not suited with the blinkers on for the first time. Mr L Baudron will be interviewed on Wednesday, 21 October 2015 in respect to the future plans for Orion Love.
  • Diametric – overraced in the middle stages.

RACE 4: TAB Highway Handicap 1200m

  • Grand Proposal – replated in front after arriving on course. Trainer N Layt was fined $100 under AR141B(3) for unsatisfactory plating. At the 800m was hampered and Flash In The Dark, which was overracing, had to be checked when Invienna (M Bell) shifted in abruptly. M Bell was reprimanded and told that he must ensure he is clear when shifting ground.
  • Invienna – off-hind replated after arriving on course. Trainer Mr G Bennett was fined $100 under AR141B(3) for unsatisfactory plating. Jumped away awkwardly.
  • Tiger By The Tale – jumped away awkwardly. Near the 800m had to be steadied away from the heels of Dashie De Luxe, which shifted out slightly. Tiger By The Tale continued to overrace for some distance in the middle stages.
  • Melberra Star – raced greenly in the early stages. App. J Cartwright dropped his whip approaching the 200m.
  • Nagging – got its head up and raced ungenerously in the early stages. Near the 900m hampered when Flash In The Dark, which was overracing, ran out. Close to the finishing line was inconvenienced when Grand Proposal shifted in.
  • Madam Fran – bumped on the hindquarter by Dashie De Luxe at the entrance to the straight, as Dashie De Luxe attempted to improve to the outside of One Son. Rider C Reith could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance of the mare, however, he indicated to connections that it would benefit from being ridden more quietly. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Hesco Gold – App. R Bayliss, rider of Eccitare, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that he permitted his mount to shift out when being ridden along approaching the 200m when insufficiently clear of Hesco Gold, which was commencing to improve into a run between Eccitare and Melberra Star. App. Bayliss' permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 25 October 2015 and to expire on Saturday, 7 November 2015, on which day he may ride.
  • Flash In The Dark – rider T Huet was unable to offer any reason for the disappointing performance of the filly, other than it overraced early. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a deep laceration to the near-side hock. Trainer Mr K Dryden advised he would now remove the blinkers and would report back on the future race plans for the filly.

RACE 5: City Tattersalls Club Handicap 1400m

  • Pythagorean – slow to begin.
  • Berrimilla – slow to begin.
  • Gamblestown – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery.

RACE 6: City Tattersalls Club Brian Crowley Stakes (Listed) 1200m

  • Hellbent – At the 800m was crowded and had to be restrained when tightened for room by Sooboog, which shifted in. In the incident Hellbent came into contact with Secret Saga, which then laid out, which exacerbated the tightening to Hellbent. C Reith (Sooboog) was told he must ensure that riders to his inside have the room to which they are entitled. On the home turn had to be restrained when awkwardly placed on the heels of Secret Saga, which continued to lay out. Held up entering the straight and hampered Secret Saga when it shifted out passing the 200m. Rider T Angland was told to exercise more care.
  • Secret Saga – hampered passing the 200m when Hellbent shifted out.
  • Sooboog – when questioned why he had not taken the opportunity to ride forward and cross Hellbent earlier than he did, C Reith stated that he felt the pace was fast at the time and he was under instructions not to dig Sooboog up early, as it has a tendency to overrace.
  • Flippant – a post-race veterinary examination of the filly, which weakened after racing wide, revealed it to be displaying cardiac arrhythmia subsequent to the race and a laceration to the off-fore heel bulb. Co-trainer Mr Paul Snowden was advised that the stable must produce the results of a satisfactory ECG and that Flippant must trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards. Mr Snowden reported the filly will be freshened up.
  • Counterattack – when questioned concerning the colt being ridden back in the field, J Collett confirmed that his instructions were to be forward, however, he said that there was a line of horses to his inside early and he elected to restrain, rather than push forward and take up a trailing position.

RACE 7: City Tattersals Club Lightning (Listed) 1100m

  • That's A Good Idea – prior to the declaration of correct weight, the Stewards viewed the head-on footage in the home straight, whereby inside the 100m the gelding brushed the rail when taken by Dothraki. Bearing in mind the margin of a neck, the Stewards were satisfied that there were not sufficient grounds to sustain an objection.
  • Nostradamus – was checked on jumping away when tightened for room between Fontelina, which shifted in, Runaway Star, which was taken out by Sure And Fast. Shortly after this incident Sure And Fast was bumped by Skip Course, which in turn was taken out by Eloping. In the incident Nostradamus struck the heels of Sure And Fast and blundered.
  • Craftiness – close to the finishing line had to be steadied when slightly crowded for room between Eloping, which was taken out by Dothraki, and Fontelina, which was taken in by Skip Course when improving quickly to the inside of that runner.
  • Atmospherical – when questioned, T Huet stated he was under instructions to ride his mount with cover and, when he took hold of his mount on jumping away, it threw its head up and raced ungenerously.

RACE 8: City Tattersalls Club Cup (Listed) 2400m

  • Opinion – trainer's representative Mr L Prior was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the gelding racing again subsequent to it being withdrawn on vet's advice due to being found to have a pulse in the near-hind foot.
  • Sasenkile – which shifted its near fore plate and had Equilox applied on Thursday, 15 October, was examined by the Club's Veterinary Officer and the on course farrier and passed fit to start. The gelding, which was fractious in the stall, on jumping away spun around, reared over backwards, dislodging its rider App. S Lisnyy. The Stewards ruled that Sasenkile must trial to their satisfaction and they further recommended that the crossover nose band, which was added to today's gear, be removed. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a laceration to the off-fore tendon.
  • Beaten Up – slow to begin.
  • La Amistad – when questioned, rider C Reith stated the mare tracked into the race well from the 800m, but was disappointing in its failure to run on in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be mildly lame in the near foreleg. Co-trainer Mr M Hawkes was advised he must produce a veterinary certificate prior to La Amistad racing again.
  • Ruling Dynasty – when questioned regarding the improved performance, as compared to its eighth placing in the Craven Plate at Randwick on 3 October 2015, trainer Mr J Cummings stated that today the horse was dropping back from a weight for age race to a handicap and was significantly down in weight. He also reiterated that, as reported on 3 October 2015, Ruling Dynastty was affected by the heat and displayed a poor post-race recovery.

RACE 9: City Tattersalls Club Nivision (Group 3) 1200m

  • Slots – slow to begin.
  • Sultry Feeling – bounded in the air and missed the start. When questioned concerning his riding of the mare, J Byrne stated that he was under instructions not to make a long run, as Sultry Feeling performs best when held up for a short sprint. As a consequence, he allowed his mount to balance up in the straight, where by it finished the race off well. The instructions were confirmed by trainer Mr J Cummings. J Byrne was reminded that, irrespective of his instructions, he must not set his mount too difficult a task.
  • Unequivocal – overraced in the early stages. At the 600m was briefly crowded by Slots, which in turn was taken in by Tree Of Jesse (T Huet). T Huet was reprimanded and advised to ensure he leaves sufficient room for runners to his inside in future. The mare, which was held up on the heels of Peace Force, ran in close to the line and made contact with the hindquarter of Fine Mist
  • Thinking Of You – crowded at the 600m. Improved into a narrow run inside the 50m between Fine Mist and Frill Seeking and shortly after was crowded when Fine Mist shifted in.
  • Tree Of Jesse – was forced to race wide without cover throughout.
