Unlucky Runners

  • Hell Or Highwater (Race 1) - after being fractious in its starting stall underwent a veterinary examination and was passed suitable to race. Held up rounding the home turn and had to be steadied off the heels of Timely Girl passing the 400m.
  • Young Amazon (Race 1) - slow to begin. Raced wide without cover.
  • Takedown (Race 2) - knuckled shortly after the start. Raced wide without cover in the early stages.
  • Kinglike (Race 3) - raced wide without cover throughout and hung out rounding the home turn.
  • Princess Aria (Race 4) - held up rounding the home turn and was disappointed for run on straightening.
  • Etymology (Race 5) - hampered shortly after the start. Held up rounding the home turn and had to shift out before obtaining clear running passing the 200m.
  • Eclair Attack (Race 5) - after shifting in to take up a position inside of Ragnaar (NZ) near the 1800m then had to be steadied when tightened for room between Etymology and Ragnaar (NZ) which had shifted in. Had to be steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of Ragnaar (NZ) which shifted out under pressure.
  • Amicus (Race 8) - raced wide without cover.
  • Gregers (Race 8) - held up over the concluding stages when making ground. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have the thumps and a slower than normal recovery.
  • Snow Sky (GB) (Race 9) - held up rounding the home turn then had to be steadied out across the heels of Set Square to obtain clear running.
  • Pittsburgh Flyer (Race 10) - held up and unable to obtain a clear run in the early part of the straight.
  • Brook Road (Race 10) - held up in the early part of the straight and when making ground had to be steadied off the heels of Afleet Esprit when disappointed for a run near the 100m and went to the line not being fully tested.

 

Vet Notes

  • Gregers (Race 8) - A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have the thumps and a slower than normal recovery.
  • Sabatini (Race 8) - a post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have a throat abnormality which may have affected the racing performance and will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

 

Penalties and Fines

  • Glyn Schofield on Ball Of Muscle (Race 3) - pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a), the carelessness being that approaching the 700m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Headwater thereby leaving that horse in insufficient racing room and having to be checked. Glyn Schofield had his licenced to ride in races suspended for a period to commence at midnight October 17th and to expire at midnight October 26th, a total of ten race meetings (two metropolitan, eight provincial). In assessing penalty Stewards took into account Glyn Schofields guilty plea and good record and that the carelessness was in the mid-range.
  • Dwayne Dunn on Lumosty (Race 3) - pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a), the carelessness being that after passing the 300m he angled his mount out from behind clair Choice where there was insufficient room and in doing to made heavy contact with Kuro (NZ) causing that horse to get unbalanced and then Lumosty making contact with the heels of clair Choice. Dwayne Dunn had his licence to ride in races suspended for a period to commence at midnight October 17th and to expire at midnight 25th, a total of ten race meetings (two metropolitan, eight provincial). In assessing penalty Stewards took into account Dwayne Dunns guilty plea and that the incident was in the lower end of the mid-range.
  • Mr Robbie Laing Trainer of The Grey Flash (Race 4) - trainer Mr Robbie Laing was fined $300 under the provisions of LR27A(4) for failing to notify that the filly had been stabled, not in accordance with the stable return information. 
  • Craig Williams on Honesta (Race 4) - rider Craig Williams was fined $500 for using his whip seven times forehand prior to the 100m which is two times more than permitted. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account Craig Williams recent record and that his mount finished second.
  • Mr Joseph Pride Trainer of Rock Sturdy (Race 7) - trainer Mr Joseph Pride pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions AR175(k), in that his negligence may have led to a breach of the rules when he failed to include the lead bag as part of the gear on presentation. Mr Pride was fined $1000. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account this was Mr Prides first offence and that the omission was discovered before the race. Brushed the rail near the 400m and became unbalanced.
  • Craig Newitt on Volkstoknbarrell (Race 9) - rider Craig Newitt was fined $400 for using his whip eight times forehand prior to the 100m, which is three times more than permitted. In assessing penalty Steward took into account Craig Newitt had not breached this rule for two years and that it was a Group 1 race.
  • Damian Lane on Rising Romance (NZ) (Race 9) - pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a), the carelessness being that rounding the home turn he endeavoured to shift his mount from inside of Gust Of Wind (NZ) to the outside of Gust Of Wind (NZ) resulting in him placing Magicool in restricted room to a point where his mount continued to shift out causing Magicool having to be checked. Damian Lane had his licence to ride in races suspended for a period to commence at midnight October 18th and to expire at midnight October 27th, a total of ten race meetings (two metropolitan and eight provincial). In assessing penalty Stewards took into account Damian Lanes guilty plea and record and that the incident was in the mid-range.

 

Race-by-Race Summary

Race 1 - YELLOWGLEN PLATE - 1400 metres

  • Pearl Star - connections advised would be ridden quieter from the gate; settled towards the rear of the field.
  • Hell Or Highwater - after being fractious in its starting stall underwent a veterinary examination and was passed suitable to race. Held up rounding the home turn and had to be steadied off the heels of Timely Girl passing the 400m.
  • Young Amazon - slow to begin. Raced wide without cover.
  • Italy - after being caught wide in the early stages was allowed to stride forward and sit outside the leader approaching the 1000m.

Race 2 - POLYTRACK GOTHIC STAKES (Listed) - 1400 metres

  • Metallic Crown - jumped away awkwardly and was then restrained to take up a position closer to the rail. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted today, rider Jim Cassidy explained that the pre-race plan was to go forward providing the colt jumped cleanly, however after his mount was awkward away he elected to adopt plan b, and that was to ride his mount quieter, given the circumstances. He added that last start the colt failed to handle its first start at Caulfield and had progressed a long way from one preparation. Trainer Mr Chris Waller confirmed the colt will now be sent for a spell.
  • Takedown - knuckled shortly after the start. Raced wide without cover in the early stages.
  • Santa Ana Lane - shifted out to improve its position approaching the 500m resulting in Comeback being taken wider on the track. When questioned regarding the performance, rider Ben Melham explained that the slow tempo of the race did not suit his mount, particularly when Metallic Crown was unable to lead as expected and that his instructions were to ride his mount back in the field. He added that coming approaching the home turn, given his mount was only having its third start, he elected to come to the outside to guarantee and uninterrupted run to the line. It was noted the first 800m was run in 48.78. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
  • Comeback - taken wider on the course approaching the 500m.

Race 3 - DILMAH SINGLE ORIGIN TEAS CAULFIELD SPRINT (Group 2) - 1000 metres

  • Lumosty - equal first past the post; rider Dwayne Dunn lodged an objection against Eclair Choice (equal first placegetter) alleging interference at the top of the straight. On the evidence it was established that Lumosty shifted out to obtain running to the outside of Eclair Choice where there was insufficient room, and in doing so touched the heels of Eclair Choice which resulted in Lumosty becoming unbalanced when making contact with Kuro (NZ). As Stewards could not attribute this incident to Eclair Choice the objection was dismissed and correct weight was declared. Held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight.
  • Last Day (NZ) - slow to begin.
  • Ball Of Muscle - jumped away awkwardly and knuckled.
  • Headwater - over-raced in the early and middle stages.
  • Kinglike - raced wide without cover throughout and hung out rounding the home turn.
  • Kuro (NZ) - a post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 4 - NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK ETHEREAL STAKES (Group 3) - 2000 metres

  • The Grey Flash - trainer Mr Robbie Laing was fined $300 under the provisions of LR27A(4) for failing to notify that the filly had been stabled, not in accordance with the stable return information. Rounding the home turn raced in restricted room and then in the early part of the straight had to be shifted out across the heels of Ambience to obtain clear running.
  • Bannatyne - connections advised would be ridden back with cover from the wide gate; jumped away well, over-raced in the early stages and led. When questioned, rider Tom Berry explained his mount jumped away well and was left with no other option but to go forward or be caught extremely wide on the track.
  • Dawn Of Hope - jumped away awkwardly and was then tightened for room between Alittle Loose and Princess Aria due to both horses shifting ground.
  • Street Spun - raced wide without cover in the early stages.
  • Born Magic (NZ) - raced wide without cover in the middle stages.
  • Alittle Loose - after initially shifting in near the 1300m, was then tightened for room between Le Grand Cru, which shifted out slightly, and Dawnie Perfect which shifted in slightly.
  • Princess Aria - held up rounding the home turn and was disappointed for run on straightening.
  • Dawn Of Hope - near the 250m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of The Grey Flash which shifted out to improve. At that point was accidentally struck on the nose by the whip of Chris Parnham (The Grey Flash).
  • Honesta - rider Craig Williams was fined $500 for using his whip seven times forehand prior to the 100m which is two times more than permitted. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account Craig Williams recent record and that his mount finished second.

Race 5 - LADBROKES CAULFIELD CLASSIC (Group 3) - 2000 metres

  • Assertive Star - late withdrawal on veterinary advice at 1.01pm when it injured itself in the stalling area. No deductions.
  • Ayers Rock - jumped away awkwardly, shifted in and hampered Etymology. Baulked and got unbalanced near the 1200m.
  • Lizard Island - raced wide without cover in the early stages before being allowed to stride forward and take up a position outside the leader near the 1300m.
  • Ragnaar (NZ) - jumped away awkwardly. Rider Blake Shinn could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance.
  • Etymology - hampered shortly after the start. Held up rounding the home turn and had to shift out before obtaining clear running passing the 200m.
  • Scaddens Run - slow to begin.
  • Tivaci - raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Rider Damien Oliver reported that in his view the colt was not mature enough to run out the 2000m.
  • Eclair Attack - after shifting in to take up a position inside of Ragnaar (NZ) near the 1800m then had to be steadied when tightened for room between Etymology and Ragnaar (NZ) which had shifted in. Had to be steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of Ragnaar (NZ) which shifted out under pressure.
  • Get The Picture - raced wide without cover in the middle stages.

Race 6 - DAVID JONES CUP (Group 3) - 2000 metres

  • Sadlers Lake - connections advised would be ridden handy with cover; raced in a mid-field position with cover. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted today, in particular whether the gelding could have settled closer than it did in the early stages, rider Jim Cassidy said he was satisfied where he ultimately did settle and thats where his mount was travelling comfortably however in his view was disappointing in the home straight and didnt travel in the run like it did at its two previous starts at Randwick.
  • Thunder Lady (NZ) - slow to begin.
  • Dibayani (IRE) - over-raced in the early stages. Hung out for the majority of the race and drifted extremely wide rounding the home turn despite the efforts of its rider. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities and the gelding must now trial to the satisfaction of Stewards in an official trial before racing again and trainer Mr David Hayes advised the gelding would now be spelled.
  • Velox (GB) - near the 1600m had to be steadied when tightened for room between Puccini (NZ) and High Midnight which shifted in momentarily before being straightened by its rider.
  • High Midnight - raced wide without cover. Hung in over the concluding stages resulting in Thunder Lady (NZ) being placed in restricted room.
  • Puccini (NZ) - hung out rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight.
  • Stratum Star - lost its off hind plate in running.
  • Fenway - rider Blake Shinn reported something felt amiss with the mare and a post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 7 - WILLIAM HILL MOONGA STAKES (Group 3) - 1400 metres

  • Rock Sturdy - trainer Mr Joseph Pride pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions AR175(k), in that his negligence may have led to a breach of the rules when he failed to include the lead bag as part of the gear on presentation. Mr Pride was fined $1000. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account this was Mr Prides first offence and that the omission was discovered before the race. Brushed the rail near the 400m and became unbalanced.
  • Kumaon - slow to begin.
  • Famous Seamus (NZ) - jumped away awkwardly. Raced wide without cover.
  • Charlie Boy - over-raced in the early stages. When questioned, rider Blake Shinn explained that from the wide barrier draw he was unable to gain cover and therefore had to go back several horses to do so and of course this resulted in him getting much further back than was desired. He added that he was pleased with the manner in which the horse finished the race off given the circumstances. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
  • Under The Louvre - after shifting out on straightening to obtain clear running, took Chivalry wider on the course.
  • Chivalry - taken wider on the course on straightening and became unbalanced.
  • Setinum - a post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 8 - SCHWEPPES TRISTARC STAKES (Group 2) - 1400 metres

  • Catkins - connections advised would be ridden further forward than last start; raced just forward of mid-field. Hung inwards in the straight. Rider Damien Oliver could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance and a post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities and a swab sample was taken for analysis.
  • Amicus - raced wide without cover.
  • La Passe - disappointed for a run near the 300m then had to shift in to obtain clear running near the 200m.
  • Hazard - disappointed for a run passing the 200m between Gregers, which shifted out, and Solicit which shifted in slightly.
  • Gregers - held up over the concluding stages when making ground. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have the thumps and a slower than normal recovery.
  • Slightly Sweet - when making ground had to be steadied approaching the 100m before then shifting in to gain clear running passing this point.
  • Sabatini - a post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have a throat abnormality which may have affected the racing performance and will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

Race 9 - BMW CAULFIELD CUP (Group 1) - 2400 metres

  • Royal Descent - connections advised would be ridden handy with cover; raced in a handy position. Raced wide without cover in the early and middle stages. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
  • Hauraki - had to be steadied when tightened for room near the 600m when attempting a neat run to the inside of Fame Game (JPN).
  • Fame Game (JPN) - had to be steadied near the 500m when tightened for room between Hauraki and Grand Marshal (GB). When questioned regarding tactics adopted in particular from the 800m, rider Zac Purton explained that his mount normally races back in the field and that he had been given instructions to look for runs through the field rather than endeavouring to circumnavigate the field. He added that he had difficultly at various stages in the straight in obtaining clear running and that once clear passing the 100m he was riding his mount out hands and heels to the best of his ability. The trainer Mr Yoshitada Manukata confirmed the instructions and when questioned further, he clarified that the horse performs best when ridden through the field rather than the alternative. Both parties were advised that the instructions and subsequently the manner in which the horse was ridden today, cast doubt in the Stewards minds as to whether the horse was ridden to ensure that it was ridden in a manner that it obtained the best possible placing and that they would expect similar instructions to be adopted in this years Melbourne Cup.
  • Snow Sky (GB) - held up rounding the home turn then had to be steadied out across the heels of Set Square to obtain clear running.
  • Grand Marshal (GB) - when making ground near the 50m, shifted to the inside of Snow Sky (GB) which also shifted in at this point, and then had to be steadied.
  • Gust Of Wind (NZ) - raced further than its most recent starts; trainer Mr John Sargent notified it wasnt his intention however after jumping away well was further forward than anticipated.
  • Volkstoknbarrell - rider Craig Newitt was fined $400 for using his whip eight times forehand prior to the 100m, which is three times more than permitted. In assessing penalty Steward took into account Craig Newitt had not breached this rule for two years and that it was a Group 1 race.
  • Damian Lane (Rising Romance (NZ) - pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a), the carelessness being that rounding the home turn he endeavoured to shift his mount from inside of Gust Of Wind (NZ) to the outside of Gust Of Wind (NZ) resulting in him placing Magicool in restricted room to a point where his mount continued to shift out causing Magicool having to be checked. Race 10 - CROWN GOLDEN ALE SLINGHI STAKES (Listed) - 1100 metres

  • Tycoon Peri - after being loaded in its barrier stall became fractious and cast; underwent a veterinary examination and was subsequently a late withdrawal on veterinary advice at 6.18pm and must trial to the satisfaction of Stewards before racing again. All monies invested on Tycoon Peri to be refunded. Deductions applicable to bets placed on winner and placegetters prior to 6.18pm: 1 cent in the dollar for the Win #12, 1 cent in the dollar for place of winner #12, 1 cent in the dollar for second place #2 and 1 cent in the dollar for third place #13.
  • Sea Spray - stood flat footed and was slow to begin.
  • Afleet Esprit - slow to begin.
  • Sweet Emily - over-raced in the early stages and had to be checked off the heels of Tuscan Sling near the 800m.
  • Tuscan Sling - over-raced in the early and middle stages and when doing so shifted out across the heels of Miss Promiscuity and inconvenienced Sweet Emily approaching the 600m.
  • Pittsburgh Flyer - held up and unable to obtain a clear run in the early part of the straight.
  • Brook Road - held up in the early part of the straight and when making ground had to be steadied off the heels of Afleet Esprit when disappointed for a run near the 100m and went to the line not being fully tested.
  • The Messina Nymph - a post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
