Vet Notes

  • Stellar Collision (Race 3)  - A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering heat stress.
  • Beauty (Race 4) - A post race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.
  • GoodNFast (Race 5) - A post race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.
  • Black Bliss (Race 5) - A post race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be suffering heat stress.
  • Furrion (GB) (Race 6) - A post race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.
  • Material Man (Race 7) - A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering the thumps.
  • The Inevitable (Race 8) - A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering heat stress and had sustained a laceration to the off fore cannon.
  • Chapada (Race 8) - An irregular heart rhythm was detected on post race veterinary examination. Chapada shall not start in any race until the Stewards have received a satisfactory veterinary report. The report must include the results of an ECG performed at rest and cardiac auscultation performed within 30 minutes of completing a satisfactory gallop of at least 1000 metres. Chapada was also suffering heat stress.
  • Extra Brut (Race 8) - A post race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be suffering mild heat stress.
  • Long Leaf (Race 8) - A post race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be lame right foreleg. A veterinary clearance is required prior to racing again.
  • Clarice Cliffs (Race 9) - A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be suffering heat stress.
  • Shoko (Race 9) - Post-race endoscopy detected a degree of internal exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage that may have affected the horses racing performance. A veterinary clearance is required prior to racing again.

Penalties & Fines

  • Anthony Darmanin, rider of Mystic Journey  pleaded guilty to breaching the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip on thirteen occasions, eight more than permitted prior to the 100 metres. A Darmanin had his licence to ride in races suspended for a total of eight meetings to commence midnight 2 March, 2019 and to expire midnight 9 March, 2019. (1 metro, 7 provincial). Further, A Darmanin was fined $500 for using his whip in consecutive strides on two occasions AR132(7)(a)(i). A Darmanin was reprimanded for his celebratory gesture.

Summary of Races 

Race 1 VERY SPECIAL KIDS PLATE - 1000 metres:

Luke Currie (Yulong Savings), third past the post, lodged an objection against Cheer Leader (Michael Walker) being declared second placegetter on the grounds of alleged interference near the 200 metres. It was established that passing the 200 metres Cheer Leader shifted out when racing greenly and inconvenienced Yulong Savings which was taken out off its course. Stewards were of the view that the ground Yulong Savings lost as a result of the incident exceeded the nose margin between those horses at the finish line therefore the objection was upheld and the placings amended; Mockery (1st), Yulong Savings (2nd), Cheer Leader (3rd) and Lanigera (4th).

  • Miss Harriette Slow to begin.
  • Yulong Savings Began awkwardly. Inconvenienced near the 200 metres.
  • Judgement - Began awkwardly. Steadied at the 200 metres when disappointed for a run between Mockery (Linda Meech), which after initially shifting out, then shifted back in and Lanigera. L Meech was notified to exercise more care.
  • Beautrooper Slow to begin.
  • Amarula Queen Began awkwardly. Hung in throughout.

Race 2 3AW ROY HIGGINS QUALITY - 2600 metres:

  • Schabau (GER) Change of tactics To be ridden further back. Settled mid-field.
  • Double Bluff (IRE) Over raced passing the 1400 metres.

Race 3 ATA/BOB HOYSTED HANDICAP - 1000 metres:

  • I Am Someone Over raced in the early stages.
  • Stellar Collision - Near the 50 metres shifted in towards Battle Hero and made contact with that gelding, which had also shifted out. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering heat stress.
  • Snitzson Near the 50 metres eased out away from the heels of Stellar Collision, which had shifted out after bumping with Battle Hero.

Race 4 MITTYS HANDICAP - 1100 metres:

  • Khulaasa Sprawled at the start. Rider Damien Oliver reported that the filly lost its footing on jumping away and it may be better suited to racing around a turn. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality. Stewards will follow up with the Hayes/Dabernig stable.
  • Charlayne Eased in across the heels of Khulaasa approaching the 200 metres to obtain clear running.
  • Beauty Rider Luke Currie reported the filly, which was first up today, raced fresh and as a result tired. A post race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.

Race 5 SEPPELT WINES PLATE - 1400 metres:

  • Helmaz Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed suitable to race.
  • Winning Partner Began awkwardly. Held up for clear running from the 500 metres and went to the line not fully tested.
  • GoodNFast Began awkwardly. A post race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.
  • Syds Coin Slow to begin.
  • Master Ash Began awkwardly. Rider Stephen Baster reported his mount made an unusual respiratory noise on pulling up. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality. Stewards will follow up with the Waterhouse/Bott stable.
  • Mr Quickie Slow to begin.
  • Write Your Name Raced three wide without cover.
  • Age Of Chivalry (NZ) - In the home straight hung in, placing Damian Lane at a disadvantage in riding the gelding out.
  • Black Bliss - A post race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be suffering heat stress.
  • Brilliant Choice Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes reported that on return to the stable the gelding had blood at one nostril. Prior to racing again Brilliant Choice must perform in a satisfactory gallop of at least 1,000 metres in the presence of a Steward.

Race 6 THE TAB SHAFTESBURY AVENUE HANDICAP - 1400 metres:

  • Poetic Dream (IRE) - Change of tactics - To be ridden back. Stewards notified the Hayes/Dabernig stable that they must declare any change of tactics 30 minutes prior to the race. Bounded at the start when being restrained.
  • Furrion (GB) Slow to begin. A post race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.
  • Violate Raced three wide without cover.
  • Zebulon (NZ) Steadied approaching the 600 metres when crowded for room by Grunt, which lay in.
  • Grunt Rider Damien Oliver reported that the horse was not suited under its high weight. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.
  • Sircconi Rider Stephen Baster reported the gelding, which was first up today, would benefit from todays event. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.

Race 7 BLAMEY STAKES - 1600 metres:

  • Johannes Vermeer (IRE) Began awkwardly.
  • Tavago (NZ) Slow to begin. Tightened for room passing the 300 metres between Bring Me Roses and Material Man, both of which shifted ground before being straightened.
  • Fifty Stars (IRE) Began awkwardly.
  • So Si Bon Began awkwardly.
  • Tom Melbourne (IRE) Began awkwardly. When questioned rider Michael Walker explained that he had intended to obtain a position with cover, however, after jumping away awkwardly from the wide barrier he settled further back than intended to obtain cover.
  • Main Stage (NZ) - Held up for clear running from passing the 200 metres and near the 50 metres had to be steadied when disappointed for clear running on the inside of Manuel, which after shifting out slightly, shifted back in slightly before being straightened.
  • Material Man Raced three wide without cover from the 900 metres. Rider Lucy Warwick reported the gelding hung out throughout and raced flat. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering the thumps.
  • Theanswermyfriend Raced keenly in the middle stages. Rider Damien Lane could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.

Race 8 AUSTRALIAN GUINEAS - 1600 metres:

  • Performer Change of tactics To be ridden back. Settled towards the rear of the field.
  • Ranier Began awkwardly.
  • OTauto Began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with The Inevitable.
  • Mystic Journey Began awkwardly. Rider Anthony Darmanin pleaded guilty to breaching the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip on thirteen occasions, eight more than permitted prior to the 100 metres. Rider Sigrid Carr was severely reprimanded for attempting a run where there was insufficient room near the 600 metres between Hawkshot, which had been shifting out and Scottish Rogue. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering heat stress and had sustained a laceration to the off fore cannon.
  • Chapada Raced three wide without cover. Rider Damien Oliver reported the gelding was obliged to travel wide throughout and as result failed to respond when placed under pressure and was eased down over the concluding stages. An irregular heart rhythm was detected on post race veterinary examination. Chapada shall not start in any race until the Stewards have received a satisfactory veterinary report. The report must include the results of an ECG performed at rest and cardiac auscultation performed within 30 minutes of completing a satisfactory gallop of at least 1000 metres. Chapada was also suffering heat stress.
  • Extra Brut A post race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be suffering mild heat stress.
  • Stars Of Carrum Raced wide from the 800 metres. Rider Ben Melham reported his mount felt uncomfortable in its action behind. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.
  • Adana Checked approaching the 300 metres when attempting a narrow run between Chapada and Ranier, which shifted in away from Stars of Carrum (Ben Melham) after being initially taken in by that colt before it was straightened. Stewards did not attribute this interference to any one rider but did notify Ben Melham to exercise more care in future.
  • Hawkshot Tactics queried. Rider Mark Zahra explained that the gelding can over race when racing close with other runners and for this reason in the early stages he was satisfied to travel wider when improving forward to obtain the lead.
  • Long Leaf A post race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be lame right foreleg. A veterinary clearance is required prior to racing again.

Race 9 FURPHY STAKES - 1400 metres:

  • Temple Of Bel Slow to begin. Rider Craig Williams reported the mare failed to finish off as expected and in his opinion, would appreciate tracks with more give. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.
  • Samovare Slow into stride.
  • Music Of The Night Began awkwardly.
  • Jester Halo Raced three wide without cover.
  • Aristia - Held up for clear running from the 500 metres until passing the 300 metres.
  • Clarice Cliffs Raced keenly in the middle stages. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be suffering heat stress.
  • Shoko Lay out when weakening upon straightening. Post-race endoscopy detected a degree of internal exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage that may have affected the horses racing performance. A veterinary clearance is required prior to racing again.
