Stewards' Summary @ Derby Day

Vet Notes

  • Takedown (Race 1) - Rider Tommy Berry reported after the race that the gelding had made an unusual respiratory noise. A post-race veterinary examination revealed abnormal breathing and a throat abnormality.
  • The Grey Flash (Race 2) - Held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight, then shifted out to improve its position and made contact with Lazumba. Post-race veterinary examination revealed minor abrasions to the right fore.
  • Bohemian Lily (NZ) (Race 5) - Rider Jim Cassidy reported the mare raced flat and was under pressure from the 600 metres. Post-race endoscopy detected a degree of internal exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage that may have affected the horses racing performance.
  • Chance To Dance (IRE) (Race 5) - Raced wide in the early stages and allowed to stride and sit outside the leader near the 1600 metres. Rider Craig Williams reported he did a little work through the early stages however the gelding was under pressure from the 800 metres and failed to respond to his riding. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering a throat abnormality. A veterinary clearance is required prior to being permitted to race again.
  • Stratum Star (Race 6) - Rider Craig Williams reported the horse worked through the early stages before settling outside the leader however was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slower than normal recovery.
  • Miss Rose De Lago (Race 8) - After becoming fractious in the barrier, underwent a veterinary examination and was passed suitable to ride. Rider Opie Bosson reported the mare changed stride near the 800 metres and was then under pressure. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormality other than a small amount of blood on the right nostril which the RVL vets attributed to external trauma.
  • La Passe (Race 8) - Held up rounding the home turn until passing the 300 metres. Passing the 100 metres had to be steadied when racing in restricted room to the inside of Solicit, which shifted in away from Jessy Belle. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame on the left fore. Veterinary clearance required.

Unlucky Runners

  • Patch Adams (Race 1) - Held up rounding the home turn and until near the 300 metres.
  • Zarabeel (NZ) (Race 2) - Held up rounding the home turn and until near the 300 metres.
  • Hosting (Race 3) - Jumped away awkwardly. For some distance in the home straight had difficulty in obtaining clear running before changing course near the 200 metres to gain clear running.
  • Keen Array (Race 4) - Held up until obtaining clear running passing the 200 metres.
  • Hawkspur (Race 5) - Held up rounding the home turn until clear running approaching the 300 metres.
  • Magic Artist (Race 6) - Held up rounding the home turn and until passing the 200 metres. Again held up over the concluding stages and went to the line not fully tested.
  • La Passe (Race 8) - Held up rounding the home turn until passing the 300 metres. Passing the 100 metres had to be steadied when racing in restricted room to the inside of Solicit, which shifted in away from Jessy Belle. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame on the left fore. Veterinary clearance required. 
  • Azkadellia (NZ) (Race 8) -  Held up rounding the home turn and until near the 300 metres before shifting out and obtaining clear running.
  • Abidewithme (Race 8) - Located in the adjacent barrier to Miss Rose De Lago, also underwent a veterinary examination and was passed suitable to ride. Held up until passing the 300 metres and again over the concluding stages when making ground.
  • Slightly Sweet (Race 8) - Slow to begin. Held up in the early part of the straight until passing the 200 metres and was again held up over the concluding stages and went to the line not fully tested.

Penalties and Fines

  • Opie Bosson (Charmed Harmony) (Race 3) - pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provision of AR137(a). The careless riding being that near the 1000 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Sadaqa, with resulted in Red Excitement and Ritchies Vibe, which were to its inside being taken in off their course, which in turn caused crowding to San Diego, resulting in that horse losing its position on the fence. Opie Bosson his licence to ride in races suspended for a total of 10 meetings to commence midnight 31 October, 2015 and to expire midnight 9 November, 2015. (3 metro, 7 provincial). In assessing penalty the Stewards were of the view that the incident qualified for the mid-range category of carelessness and took into account his guilty plea and good record.
  • Tommy Berry (Ecuador NZ) (Race 6) - pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provision of AR137(a). The careless riding being that near the 400 metres he contributed to the interference caused to Flamingo Star by permitting his mount to shift out to improve its position where there was insufficient room and in doing so making contact with Flamingo Star and taking it out off its course. Tommy Berry had his licence to ride in races suspended for a total of 7 meetings to commence midnight 3 November, 2015 and to expire midnight 9 November, 2015. (2 metro, 5 provincial). In assessing penalty the Stewards were of the view that the incident qualified for the low-range category of carelessness and took into account his guilty plea and good record.
  • Damian Lane (Rising Romance) (Race 6) - pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provision of AR137(a). The careless riding contributed to the interference near the 400 metres when he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Flamingo Star resulting in that horse having to be checked. Damian Lane had his licence to ride in races suspended for a total of 7 meetings to commence midnight 3 November, 2015 and to expire midnight 9 November, 2015. (2 metro, 5 provincial). In assessing penalty the Stewards were of the view that the incident qualified for the low-range category of carelessness and took into account his guilty plea.
  • Etymology (Race 7) - Rider James McDonald was fined $750 for breaching the provisions of AR137(A)(5)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip on nine occasions in a forehand manner prior to the 100 metres, which is four more than permitted. James McDonald was further fined $250 for breaching the provisions of AR137(A)(5)(a)(i) in that he used his whip in consecutive strides prior to the 100 metres.
  • Joseph Azzopardi (Kia Ora Koutou) (Race 7) - pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provision of AR137(a). The careless riding being that near the 800 metres he permitted his mount to shift out when Jadeer had committed to the outside of his heels resulting in Jadeer being taken out and causing severe interference to Pay Up Bro and Man Of Choice. Joseph Azzopardi had his licence to ride in races suspended for a total of 12 meetings to commence midnight 3 November, 2015 and to expire midnight 13 November, 2015. (3 metro, 9 provincial). In assessing penalty the Stewards were of the view that the incident qualified for the mid-range category of carelessness and took into account his guilty plea and good record.

Race-by-Race Summary

Race 1 CARBINE CLUB STAKES - 1600 metres:

  • Deadly Shadow - Connections advised that the gelding would be ridden off the speed with cover. Jumped away awkwardly and lost ground
  • Flying Light - Over raced in the early and middle stages. Over the concluding stages was taken wider out on the track to avoid the heels of Tivaci (Opie Bosson), which at this point shifted out. Opie Bosson was notified to exercise more care
  • Patch Adams - Held up rounding the home turn and until near the 300 metres.
  • Takedown - Rider Tommy Berry reported after the race that the gelding had made an unusual respiratory noise. A post-race veterinary examination revealed abnormal breathing and a throat abnormality.
  • Montauk - Rider Hugh Bowman could offer no real excuse for the performance. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality and it was noted that during the running of the event the gelding lost the right fore plate. Trainer Chris Waller confirmed that Montauk would now be spelled.
  • Bassett - (NZ) During the running of the event the gelding lost the right fore plate.
  • Tivaci - Opie Bosson was reprimanded for breaching the provisions of AR137(A)(5)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip on six occasions in a forehand manner prior to the 100 metres, one more than accepted.

Race 2 MUMM WAKEFUL STAKES - 2000 metres:

  • Muzyka - Slow to begin. Inconvenienced passing the 300 metres due to Ambience shifting out to improve its position.
  • Ritzy - Jumped away awkwardly. Had to be steadied near the 1400 metres to avoid the heels of Cest Beau La Vie, which shifted in slightly.
  • Dawnie Perfect - On jumping away had to be steadied when tightened between Ambience and The Grey Flash, which was taken in by Cest Beau La Vie, which in turn, after jumping away awkwardly, was taken in by Bengal Cat.
  • Cest Beau La Vie - Jumped away awkwardly. Raced wide without cover in the middle stages.
  • Bannatyne - Raced wide without cover in the early stages before taking up a position outside the leader near the 1400 metres. Lay out in the straight. Performance. Rider Blake Shinn reported the filly had a nice run, however, failed to finish as expected. Connections confirmed that Bannatyne would now be spelled. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.
  • Beluga Blue - Over raced in the early and middle stages.
  • Lazumba - Raced keenly in the early stages and for this reason was further forward than its recent starts.
  • The Grey Flash - Held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight, then shifted out to improve its position and made contact with Lazumba. Post-race veterinary examination revealed minor abrasions to the right fore.
  • Zarabeel (NZ) - Held up rounding the home turn and until near the 300 metres.
  • My Poppette - Performance. Rider Dwayne Dunn reported the filly was not comfortable on todays track condition and may not have backed up as well as anticipated. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality and a swab sample was taken for analysis.

Race 3 GUVERA STAKES - 1400 metres:

  • Mr Utopia - After jumping away awkwardly and losing ground, attempted to buck for some distance. Trainer Robert Smerdon was notified that prior to being permitted to race again the gelding must trial to the satisfaction of Stewards.
  • Disposition - Jumped away awkwardly and lost ground. During the event lost the near fore plate.
  • Kool Kompany (IRE) - Jumped away awkwardly.
  • Hosting - Jumped away awkwardly. For some distance in the home straight had difficulty in obtaining clear running before changing course near the 200 metres to gain clear running.
  • Ninth Legion - Raced wide without cover.
  • Sadaqa - Raced wide without cover.
  • Red Excitement - Taken in near the 1000 metres. Near the 150 metres, when giving ground, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Artlee, which shifted in under pressure when also tiring.
  • Richies Vibe - Taken in near the 1000 metres.
  • San Diego - Lost position at the 1000 metres

  • Artlee - Rider Mitchell Bell reported the gelding over raced in the early and middle stages and was second up from a spell, which may have been detrimental to its chances. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a throat abnormality and trainer Todd Willan will be required to submit a veterinary certificate including the satisfactory results of an endoscopic examination. During the event lost the near fore plate.

Race 4 COOLMORE STUD STAKES - 1200 metres:

  • Ragazzo Del Corsa - Jumped away awkwardly.
  • Japoniseme - - Held up until gaining clear running near the 200 metres
  • Counterattack - Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Settled in a forward position. Rider Blake Shinn reported his intention was to gain cover, however, the colt jumped well and raced a little keen.
  • Keen Array - Held up until obtaining clear running passing the 200 metres.
  • Super One - A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality. Stewards will follow up with trainer Michael Freedman regarding Super One.
  • Exosphere - Performed below market expectations. Rider James McDonald reported the colt had a nice run, however, failed to finish off the event. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality. Stewards will follow up with trainer John OShea regarding the colt.

Race 5 LEXUS STAKES - 2500 metres:

  • Damian Lane (Zanteca NZ), which finished second past the post, lodged an objection against, Excess Knowledge (GB) (Dwayne Dunn) being declared first placegetter on the grounds of alleged interference in the straight. On the evidence, it was established that passing the 200 metres Excess Knowledge (GB), when laying in, shifted in towards Zanteca (NZ) resulting in Zanteca (NZ) shifting in away from that horse. As Stewards were satisfied that Zanteca had not lost any ground out of the incident and from that point both horses had an uninterrupted run to the winning post, the objection was dismissed and correct weight was declared.
  • Junoob (GB) - Trainer Chris Waller advised Stewards that the gelding would be further forward. Settled at the rear of the field. Rider Blake Shinn reported the gelding lacked interest and was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality. Stewards will follow up with trainer Chris Waller regarding the gelding.
  • Ethiopia - Jumped away awkwardly. Apprentice Patrick Moloney reported the gelding raced dour. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.
  • High Midnight - Jumped away awkwardly. Over raced in the early stages.
  • Manalapan (IRE) - Raced wide without cover.
  • Chance To Dance (IRE) - Raced wide in the early stages and allowed to stride and sit outside the leader near the 1600 metres. Rider Craig Williams reported he did a little work through the early stages however the gelding was under pressure from the 800 metres and failed to respond to his riding. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering a throat abnormality. A veterinary clearance is required prior to being permitted to race again.

  • Gailo Chop (FR) - Connections advised the gelding would be ridden forward led the race.
  • Set Square - Connections advised to be ridden with cover. Settled behind the leaders. Held up over the concluding stages.
  • Weary (FR) - Trainer Chris Waller advised Stewards that the gelding would be further back. Settled at the rear of the field.
  • Flamingo Star - Jumped away awkwardly. Over raced in the early and middles stages and was also wide without cover in the middle stages checked on straightening.
  • Rising Romance (NZ) - Jumped away awkwardly.
  • Index Linked (GB) - Slow to begin.
  • Ecuador (NZ) - Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
  • Magic Artist - Held up rounding the home turn and until passing the 200 metres. Again held up over the concluding stages and went to the line not fully tested.
  • Extra Zero - Held up rounding the home turn and shifted out to obtain clear running near the 300 metres.
  • Happy Trails - A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.
  • Stratum Star - Rider Craig Williams reported the horse worked through the early stages before settling outside the leader however was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slower than normal recovery.
  • Pornichet (FR) -Rider Jim Cassidy reported the horse raced sour and was of the understanding that it would now be sent for a spell.

Race 7 AAMI VICTORIA DERBY - 2500 metres:

  • Scaddens Run - Had to be checked at the 800 metres to avoid the heels of Jadeer.
  • Tarzino (NZ) - Trainer Mick Price advised that it was the stables intention to ride the horse closer due to the shorter run to the first turn and the step up in distance. Settled mid field.
  • Ayers Rock - Connections advised to be ridden with cover. Settled in third position.'Extra Choice (NZ) Slow to begin.
  • Get The Picture - Shortly after the start was hampered when tightened for room between Jadeer and Iron Boss, which was taken in by Palace Tycoon, which was in turn taken in by Etymology, which shifted in.
  • Jadeer - Knuckled on jumping away. Shifted to the outside of Kia Ora Koutou, which also shifted out at this point near the 1000 metres and as a result Jadeer, Pay Up Bro and Man Of Choice (NZ) were taken wider on the course and hampered.
  • Iron Boss - Raced fiercely in the early and middle stages and as a result shifted out near the 1900 metres and hampered Etymology. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.
  • Lizard Island - Raced wide without cover in the early and middle stages.
  • Pay Up Bro - Interference near the 800 metres.
  • Man Of Choice - Interference near the 800 metres.
  • Kia Ora Koutou - Hampered passing the 800metres due to Pay Up Bro shifting in abruptly and making heavy contact.

Race 8 MYER CLASSIC - 1600 metres:

  • Miss Rose De Lago - After becoming fractious in the barrier, underwent a veterinary examination and was passed suitable to ride. Rider Opie Bosson reported the mare changed stride near the 800 metres and was then under pressure. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormality other than a small amount of blood on the right nostril which the RVL vets attributed to external trauma.
  • Abidewithme - Located in the adjacent barrier to Miss Rose De Lago, also underwent a veterinary examination and was passed suitable to ride. Held up until passing the 300 metres and again over the concluding stages when making ground.
  • Slightly Sweet - Slow to begin. Held up in the early part of the straight until passing the 200 metres and was again held up over the concluding stages and went to the line not fully tested.
  • Mays Dream - Raced wide without cover.
  • Azkadellia (NZ) - Held up rounding the home turn and until near the 300 metres before shifting out and obtaining clear running.
  • La Passe - Held up rounding the home turn until passing the 300 metres. Passing the 100 metres had to be steadied when racing in restricted room to the inside of Solicit, which shifted in away from Jessy Belle. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame on the left fore. Veterinary clearance required.
  • Royal Descent - Rider Hugh Bowman reported the mare travelled well, however, failed to respond to his riding backing up from a disappointing performance in the Caulfield Cup. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.
  • Amicus - Inconvenienced approaching the winning post.

Race 9 TAB.COM.AU STAKES - 1200 metres:

  • Moment Of Change - Jumped away awkwardly and knuckled.
  • Under The Louvre-  Had to be checked when obtaining a neat run to the inside of Generalife near the 150 metres, which shifted in slightly before being straightened by its rider.
  • Generalife - Held up until passing the 400 metres.
