The Key Factors - San Domenico Stakes

Published: 15 Aug 2014

A good group of three year olds assemble for the San Domenico Stakes and the early betting markets are wide open. Each galloper brings different form-lines and a broad range of strengths to the event.

With a Group prize on offer and some speedy gallopers engaged it is sure to be a competitive finish. So what are the key factors that will make the difference?

Toughness

Wandjina isn't just your normal speedster. He has the rare quality of being able to work hard at both ends of the race and he proved that with a tough performance behind Ghibellines last start. Our analyst team also has him listed as a nice type of horse that could have scope to improve. A potent mix of attributes that should see him right in the finish.

Speed

Bugatty has shown in his short career that he has more Early Speed than most. His recent trial was good and you could ignore his last two runs, which included a failure at Group 1 level and a poor run on a Heavy track. If Rosehill is favouring leaders and not too wet, he will prove hard to catch.

Scope

In terms of type, they don't come much better looking than Washington Heights. He shone in the parade ring at his first start, before putting in a performance that was worthy of his quality. There may be a risk that he gets back in the field, but they are sure to know he is in the race late.

Reliability

One of the fillies in the race Ygritte has shown real grit in her races and has a racing style that means she gives herself every chance. The good barrier draw could ensure a nice tun in transit and she has the quality to force her way into the finish at the end.

Strength

The brute force and stamina of Nostradamus could come into play if the leaders go too quickly. He showed that he can sustain a long run in the Blue Diamond and has the build of good horse if the Hawkes team can keep him fit and sound. They are the masters of getting these types of horses at their best and this guy looks very hard to hold out.

The Verdict

The best gamble in the race might be Wandjina given the odds on offer and how hard he tries, but Nostradamus and Washington Heights will be very hard to beat.
