Vet Notes

  • Kaching (Race 1) - A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering a throat abnormality. A veterinary clearance is required prior to racing again.
  • Esposito Gold (Race 1) - A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame near fore and to be suffering a throat abnormality. A veterinary clearance is required prior to racing again. Trainer Robert Kingston confirmed that Esposito Gold will now be spelled.
  • Star Fall (Race 2) - A post race veterinary examination revealed Star Fall had blood in the near side nostril and was lame in the near foreleg. Representative for co-trainers C Maher and D Eustace was notified that a veterinary clearance is required and the colt must gallop to the satisfaction of Stewards over 1000 metres prior to racing again.
  • Lauchetti (Race 3) - A post race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.
  • Jentico (Race 4) - A post race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be lame right foreleg. A veterinary clearance is required prior to racing again.

Penalties & Fines

  • Brian Park (Taberna) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under the provision of AR131(a) in that near the 250 metres he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of Star Missile, which was tightened onto Starouz, steadied and lost its rightful running. B Parks licence to ride in races was suspended for a total of twelve meetings to commence midnight 24 March, 2019 and to expire midnight 4 April, 2018. (3 metro, 9 provincial). In assessing penalty Stewards were of the view the carelessness was in the mid-range category and took into account his guilty plea and record.

Summary of Races 

Race 1 PENINSULA ESSENCE HANDICAP - 1600 metres:

  • Never Again Late scratching on veterinary advice at 7.44pm.
  • All Too Huiying Raced three wide without cover.
  • Kaching App Teodore Nugent reported the gelding was making an unusual respiratory noise on pulling up. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering a throat abnormality. A veterinary clearance is required prior to racing again.
  • Esposito Gold A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame near fore and to be suffering a throat abnormality. A veterinary clearance is required prior to racing again. Trainer Robert Kingston confirmed that Esposito Gold will now be spelled.
  • Cougar Express Rider Clayton Douglas was reminded of his obligations with regard to his whip use when on a horse that is out of contention.

Race 2 NO FUSS EVENT HIRE HANDICAP - 1000 metres:

  • Miss Leonidas Jumped away awkwardly and lost ground. Hung out in the early stages and had some difficulty negotiating the turn near the 800 metres.
  • Angry Gee Slow to begin.
  • The Centaurian Jumped away awkwardly and shifted in abruptly. Hung out rounding the home turn near the 800 metres and then raced three wide without cover.
  • Redcore When making ground steadied off the heels of The Centaurian approaching the winning post.
  • Star Fall When over racing, hung out rounding the turn near the 800 metres. A post race veterinary examination revealed Star Fall had blood in the near side nostril and was lame in the near foreleg. Representative for co-trainers C Maher and D Eustace was notified that a veterinary clearance is required and the colt must gallop to the satisfaction of Stewards over 1000 metres prior to racing again.
  • Our Gladiator App Michael Poy reported the mare would be better suited when allowed to lead on its own. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.

Race 3 BENTONS SQUARE HANDICAP - 1200 metres:

  • Im Telling Ya Jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
  • Toorak Cowboy Jumped away awkwardly.
  • Steel Of Madrid Knuckled on leaving the barrier.
  • Lauchetti App Zac Spain was reminded of his obligations to ride all of his mounts out to the winning post, where possible. Z Spain reported the gelding travelled well but when asked for an effort approaching the home turn was disappointing and did not respond to his riding. A post race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.

Race 4 CLEANAWAY HANDICAP - 1200 metres:

  • Northern River Slow to begin.
  • Miss Belisa Jumped away awkwardly.
  • Jentico Raced three wide without cover. In the early part of the straight lay in obliging rider Barend Vorster to change the whip to his left hand. B Vorster reported that the filly was not suited by the continual contact his mount made with Niamh Chinn Oir through the race. A post race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be lame right foreleg. A veterinary clearance is required prior to racing again.
  • Kootara App Michael Poy could offer no excuse for the performance. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.
  • Niamh Chinn Oir App Jessica Eaton reported the mare, which was having its first start in blinkers, over raced badly in the early and middle stages and for a considerable distance made contact with Jentico (Barend Vorster), which was racing tight to its outside. Near the 500 metres was awkwardly placed close to the heels of Kootara when Jentico shifted in before being corrected. B Vorster was notified in similar circumstances he must ensure that he gives comfortable racing room to runners on his inside. Thereafter, Niamh Chinn Oir and Jentico made contact on a number of occasions mainly due to the racing manners of Niamh Chinn Oir.

Race 5 MARTIN COLLINS POLYTRACK SIRES - 1500 metres:

  • Pierro Rose Near the 50 metres inconvenienced by Legionnaire, which shifted in away from Vinco.
  • Vinco Raced further back than its most recent starts. Rider Barend Vorster explained it was his intention to be in a handy position, however, the filly lacked early pace and settled further back than anticipated.
  • Really Discreet App Kayla Crowther reported the filly did not travel as expected in the run and was disappointing. She added that Really Discreet may have come to the end of its preparation. Trainer Phillip Stokes confirmed that the filly will now be spelled.

Race 6 KENO FUN MONEY HANDICAP - 2000 metres:

  • Mitrust - Underwent a veterinary examination after being fractious in the barrier.
  • Sopressa Raced three wide without cover in the early and middle stages.
  • Chequered Flag (NZ) Had some difficulty obtaining clear running approaching the 100 metres.

Race 7 LADBROKES MORNINGTON CUP - 2400 metres:

App Fred Kersley, rider of Tarquin, which finished second in the race, lodged an objection against, Self Sense (Luke Nolen) being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference near the 300 metres. It was established that near the 300 metres Tarquin rolled in, making contact with Ventura Storm (IRE), then shifted out as Self Sense shifted in slightly, with both horses making contact and Tarquin becoming unbalanced. In these circumstances, the objection was dismissed and correct weight was declared.

  • Hang Man (IRE) Slow to begin. Rider Patrick Moloney could offer no excuse for the performance of the gelding other than it may not have run out the distance of todays event. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.
  • Tarquin Near the 300 metres hampered after bumped with Ventura Storm, then shifting out and contacting Self Sense, which shifted in slightly.
  • Ventura Storm (IRE) Unbalanced near the 300 metres.
  • High Bridge (GB) Rider Linda Meech could offer no excuse for the performance of the gelding, which raced wide from the 1000 metres. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.
  • Khartoum An irregular heart rhythm was detected on post race veterinary examination. Khartoum must be subject to examination by a veterinarian with specialist qualifications in equine internal medicine, prior to starting in any race or trial. The examination should include echocardiography, electrocardiography at rest and at exercise and any other examination that the examining veterinarian requests. Prior to starting in any race, and pending Stewards receiving a satisfactory veterinary report from the specialist examination, Khartoum must compete to the satisfaction of Stewards in an Official trial of at least 1,000 metres and have a satisfactory veterinary report that includes the results of cardiac auscultation within 30 minutes of completion of the trial.

Race 8 LADBROKES HAREEBA STAKES - 1200 metres:

  • Leodoro Late scratching on veterinary advice at 9.50am
  • Swift Sis Slow to begin.
  • Glenall Jumped away awkwardly.
  • Im Wesley Raced three wide without cover.
  • Manolo Blahniq (NZ) Rider Jake Noonan reported the gelding would be improved by the run. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.
  • Snitzkraft Rider Joe Bowditch was severely reprimanded for weighing in in excess of half a kilo over his declared weight. In assessing penalty stewards took into account that he had never offended before in this area

Race 9 STELLAR GUINEAS - 1600 metres:

  • Taxi Late scratching at 7.44am due to a communication issue with Racing Australia.
  • Star Missile Knuckled on jumping away. Steadied and lost running near the 250 metres.
  • Starouz Raced three wide without cover.
  • Esthetic Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Held up from the 300 metres until passing the 200 metres.
  • Basil Near the 300 metres raced in restricted room between Star Missile and Starouz (Zac Spain), which shifted in. Z Spain was notified to exercise care when shifting ground.
  • Duke Of Magnus Approaching the winning post steadied when racing in restricted room.
  • Mr Quickie - Got its head up when over racing in the early stages.
