Vet Notes
- Keikosan (Race 7) – A post race veterinary examination revealed speedy cuts to the near offside cannon and inside near hock. Trainer Mr K Callaughan advised the Stewards that Keikosan had pleased the stable leading into today's race and could offer no explanation in respect to the performance. Mr Callaughan undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of the mare subsequent to the race and to provide a veterinary clearance before its next race start.
Unlucky Runners
- Zaboss (Race 8) – making the home turn and in the early part of the straight was held up as it attempted to obtain clear running between Olympic Academy and Song And Laughter. Over the concluding stages, Zaboss was crowded between Olympic Academy and Song And Laughter (B Avdulla), which shifted out. B Avdulla was advised to stop riding and straighten sooner than he did on this occasion.
Summary of Races
RACE 1 – James Boags Handicap 1250m
- High Esteem – nearing the 900m was steadied from the heels of Ryker (C Reith) which shifted in when not clear. C Reith was advised to ensure he was sufficiently clear before shifting ground.
- Kristy Lee – rider J Collett could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance of the mare. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Stable representative Mr L Prior could offer no explanation for the performance and undertook to report back on the future race plans for the mare.
RACE 2 – TAB More Than Just Winning Plate 1100m
- Morton’s Fork – trainer Mr J O'Shea was fined the sum of $50 for the late notification of a tongue tie being added to the colt. Morton's Fork blundered badly on jumping.
- Babooshka – was slow to begin.
- No When To Hold Em – was slow to begin.
- Amber Isle – had difficulty obtaining clear running for a short distance on straightening.
- Sleek – was bumped on the home turn when Amber Isle shifted out.
RACE 3 – Schweppes Handicap 1550m
- Last Witness – knuckled over shortly after the start and became unbalanced. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider T Angland stated that the gelding was obliged to chase the leader Feast For Eyes in a strongly run event. He added that when placed under pressure from the 600m, his mount failed to handle the rain affected going and gave ground noticeably in the straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer representative Mr S Perry concurred with the views of T Angland and indicated that Last Witness had pleased the stable leading up to the event. Mr Perry was asked to report back on the progress of Last Witness subsequent to the race.
- Storm System – near the 400m was steadied when taken wider by Torgersen (J Collett) which shifted out. J Collett was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.
- More Than Fabulous – making the turn near the 400m was hampered when taken wider by Storm System.
- Spatsizi – approaching the first turn, Spatsizi was steadied to avoid the heels of Feast For Eyes (S Clipperton) which shifted in when not clear. S Clipperton was reprimanded and advised to ensure he is two lengths clear when shifting ground.
RACE 4 – TAB Rewards Handicap 1100m
- Freeze The Charges – rider K O’Hara stated it was her intention to lead on the mare, however her mount jumped awkwardly and as a consequence Bullpit was able to cross her mount in the early stages. She added that Freeze The Charges raced keenly throughout the middle stages and took some time to settle.
- Bullpit – over the concluding stages ran out when it appeared to shy at the winning post.
- Mr Manhattan – when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider J Parr stated that the gelding was unusually agitated behind the gates. He stated that after obtaining a position outside the leader Bullpit, without having to make use of his mount, then became immediately under pressure when the tempo increased from the 500m and was most disappointing in the way it finished the race off. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Stable representative Ms H Devlin stated that Mr Manhattan raced best when able to find cover and this was the only explanation she had for today's disappointing performance. Ms Devlin undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of Mr Manhattan subsequent to the race.
RACE 5 – TAB Highway Handicap 1550m
- Kaboombie Boy – App L Grace was reprimanded for returning to scale one kilogram overweight. In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into consideration that it had commenced to rain during the event and on weighing in, it was established his weight had fluctuated between 53.9kg and 54kg.
- Tiger By The Tale – was slow to begin. Rider T Angland stated the only explanation he could offer for the poor run was that the gelding had failed to handle the soft track conditions. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr D Williams was asked to report back on the progress of the gelding subsequent to the race.
- Lion Of Africa – was held up making the home turn.
RACE 6 – Happy 60th Birthday Lindsay Murphy Handicap 1550m
- Pythagorean – change of tactics to be ridden to lead; settled equal leader. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
- Landlocked – change of tactics to be ridden quieter; settled off pace.
- Berrimilla – was bumped at the start when Sebrina shifted in.
RACE 7 – De Bortoli Wines Handicap 1100m
- Keikosan – when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider B Spriggs stated that after being slow to begin, his mount never stretched out in the early stages and he had concerns with the mare's action throughout the event. He added that as a consequence, in the straight he elected not to ride his mount out and eased it down. A post race veterinary examination revealed speedy cuts to the near offside cannon and inside near hock. Trainer Mr K Callaughan advised the Stewards that Keikosan had pleased the stable leading into today's race and could offer no explanation in respect to the performance. Mr Callaughan undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of the mare subsequent to the race and to provide a veterinary clearance before its next race start.
- Floral Gold – buckled on jumping.
- Skripchenko – was briefly held up making the home turn.
RACE 8 – Vili's Pies Handicap 1900m
- Sabkhat – which was fractious in the barriers, was crowded shortly after the start between Song And Laughter and Frankenbeans, which was taken out by Quick Strike. Rider B Loy stated that his mount was able to obtain the lead comfortably in the early stages, but it was most disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post race veterinary examination revealed Sabkhat to have lost its near fore plate. Stable representative Mr B Widdup said in his opinion, Sabkhat is better when ridden more conservatively outside the lead, but agreed that the gelding's performance was disappointing. Mr Widdup advised that Sabkhat had pleased the stable leading into the event and undertook to report back to the Stewards on its progress subsequent to the race.
- Song And Laughter – overraced in the early and middle stages.
- Zaboss – making the home turn and in the early part of the straight was held up as it attempted to obtain clear running between Olympic Academy and Song And Laughter. Over the concluding stages, Zaboss was crowded between Olympic Academy and Song And Laughter (B Avdulla), which shifted out. B Avdulla was advised to stop riding and straighten sooner than he did on this occasion.
- Bardiya – near the 200m was directed to the outside of Olympic Academy to obtain clear running.
RACE 9 – Cellarbrations Handicap 1250m
- Surfin’ Safari – change of tactics to be ridden more forward; settled off pace. Surfin’ Safari hung out making the home turn.
