Vet Notes

  • Kevikki (Race 4) - A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery. Post-race endoscopy detected a degree of internal exercise‑induced pulmonary haemorrhage that may have affected the horse's racing performance and a veterinary certificate is required before racing again.
  • Hamslette (Race 4) - A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be suffering a throat abnormality and will require a veterinary certificate before being permitted to race again.
  • Zargos (Race 4) - A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery and mild lameness in the nearside foreleg. A veterinary certificate will be required before being permitted to race again.
  • Cristal Eyes (Race 5) - A post-race veterinary examination revealed a small wound to the nearside foreleg. Post-race endoscopy detected a degree of internal exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage that may have affected the horse's racing performance and a veterinary certificate is required prior to racing again.
  • High Ratio (Race 5) -   A post-race veterinary examination revealed a throat abnormality and the gelding was also lame in the off hind leg. A veterinary certificate is required prior to racing again.
  • Night's Watch (NZ) (Race 8) - A post‑race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the offside hind leg and a veterinary certificate is required prior to racing again.

Penalties & Fines

  • John Allen (Grey Shadow) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a), the carelessness being that near the 800 metres, he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of Ultra Smart (F. Kersley), thereby taking that horse in off its course and thereby taking Rewarding Laughter in and having to be steadied off the heels of All Over Bosanova. John Allen had his licence to ride in races suspended for a period to commence at midnight 22 April 2019 and to expire at midnight 29 April, a total of 9 race meetings (2 metropolitan, 7 provincial). In assessing penalty Stewards took into account his guilty plea, record and that the carelessness was in the low range.
  • Kayla Crowther (Latin Beat) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a), the carelessness being that from the 250m she attempted a run to the inside of La Belle Jude where there was insufficient room, resulting in clipping that mare's heels near the 150m and subsequently falling. Kayla Crowther had her licence to ride in races suspended for a period to commence at midnight 27 April 2019 and to expire at midnight 10 May, a total of 15 race meetings (2 metropolitan, 12 provincial). In assessing penalty Stewards took into account her guilty plea, good record, the fact she is an apprentice and that the carelessness was in the high range.
  • Dwayne Dunn (Manolo Blahniq) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a), the carelessness being that near the 150m he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of Kemono (JPN),thereby tightening Kemono (JPN) in onto Zebulon which resulted in Kemono (JPN) having to be checked and Zebulon having to be steadied. Dwayne Dunn had his licence to ride in races suspended for a period to commence at midnight 24 April 2019 and to expire at midnight 3 May, a total of 10 race meetings (2 metropolitan, 8 provincial). In assessing penalty Stewards took into account his guilty plea, excellent record and that the carelessness was in the mid-range.

Summary of Races 

Race 1 NOEL RUNDLE HANDICAP - 1100 metres:

  • Insta Erma (USA) Held up from the 400m until passing the 300m when shifting out to obtain clear running. Steadied near the 800m to avoid the heels of Rewarding Laughter which had been taken in.
  • Grey Shadow Raced wide through the early stages before crossing to obtain the lead near the 600m.
  • Miss Vixen Slow to begin.
  • Ultra Smart Bounded as the start was effected and lost ground. Raced wide throughout.
  • Rewarding Laughter Near the 800m was checked to avoid the heels of All Over Bosanova. Apprentice Michael Poy reported that the mare raced flat. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 2 BILL COLLINS HANDICAP - 2000 metres:

  • Sasko Over-raced in the middle stages. Held up from the 400m until passing the 100m.
  • Wetakemanhattan Raced wide without cover.
  • Ryan's Fender Raced wide through the early stages until crossing to settle outside the leader near the 1200m. Apprentice Fred Kersley reported that the gelding was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
  • Lord Gododdin (GB) Approaching the 100m when under pressure was checked to avoid the fallen Latin Beat (IRE).
  • Birth of Venus (IRE) Hampered near the 600m when contacted by Latin Beat (IRE) (K. Crowther) which attempted to shift out to improve when not clear to do so. Kayla Crowther was severely reprimanded and advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
  • La Belle Jude A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
  • Skelm Passing the 200m raced in restricted room between Sasko and Birth of Venus (IRE).
  • Latin Beat (IRE) Passing the 300m obtained a neat run to the inside of Lord Gododdin (GB). Approaching the 150m attempted a run to the inside of La Belle Jude where there was insufficient room before clipping the heels of La Belle Jude and falling. Apprentice Kayla Crowther was examined by the Club Doctor and passed fit to continue riding. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 3 BERT BRYANT HANDICAP - 1600 metres:

  • Inverloch (IRE) Near the 150m was steadied when tightened for room between Sunday Pray and Prometheus which in turn was carried in by Handsome Return (NZ).
  • Riyadh (NZ) Slow to begin.
  • Laughing Heir Slow to begin.
  • Prometheus Near the 150m was steadied to avoid the heels of Handsome Return (NZ) (J. Allen) which shifted in. John Allen was advised to exercise more care. Rider Dwayne Dunn reported that the gelding raced greenly under pressure in the straight and may appreciate a bigger track. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
  • Handsome Return (NZ) Raced wide without cover.
  • Sunday Pray Over-raced through the early stages.

Race 4 JACK ELLIOTT HANDICAP - 1600 metres:

  • Music Bay Over-raced through the early stages. Passing the 400m when laying out was checked when tightened for room to the inside of Kevikki which shifted in after brushing with Hamslette before being straightened by its rider.
  • Sure Knee Checked at the start when tightened for room between Liveinthefastlane which shifted in and Kevikki.
  • Kings Brook Near the 1100m was checked when tightened for room to the inside of Music Bay which when over-racing shifted in away from Liveinthefastlane which was racing tight on the inside of Hanslette.
  • Kevikki When under pressure passing the 200m was eased when crowded for room between Kings Brook and Hamslette. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery. Post-race endoscopy detected a degree of internal exercise‑induced pulmonary haemorrhage that may have affected the horse's racing performance and a veterinary certificate is required before racing again.
  • Liveinthefastlane Held up for clear running passing the 300m until approaching the 100m.
  • Hamslette Apprentice Lachlan King reported that the filly hung in throughout. Passing the 200m was steadied when giving ground and tightened for room between Kevikki and Nessuna Fiducia which shifted to the inside of Mrs Sippy which crossed when not fully clear. Rider Damien Thornton (Mrs Sippy) was reprimanded. Fred Kersley (Nessuna Fiducia) was advised to exercise more care. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be suffering a throat abnormality and will require a veterinary certificate before being permitted to race again.
  • Nessuna Fiducia Raced wide without cover.
  • Tysonic Near the 1100m was checked to avoid the heels of Kings Brook. Held up for clear running from the 300m until passing the 200m.
  • Collectable Over-raced in the middle stages.
  • Mrs Sippy Commenced awkwardly.
  • Our Hot Date Slow to begin.
  • Zargos A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery and mild lameness in the nearside foreleg. A veterinary certificate will be required before being permitted to race again.

Race 5 ROBERT TARANTO HANDICAP - 1200 metres:

The start of the race was delayed due to More Than Exceed (NZ) having to be re-plated.

  • Poised To Strike Held up from the 400m before shifting out over heels to obtain clear running near the 150m.
  • More Than Exceed (NZ) Apprentice Kayla Crowther could offer no explanation for the performance of the gelding. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
  • Cristal Eyes A post-race veterinary examination revealed a small wound to the nearside foreleg. Post-race endoscopy detected a degree of internal exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage that may have affected the horse's racing performance and a veterinary certificate is required prior to racing again.
  • High Ratio Raced three wide without cover throughout. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a throat abnormality and the gelding was also lame in the off hind leg. A veterinary certificate is required prior to racing again.
  • Ollivander Slow to begin.
  • Aperitif Over-raced through the early stages.
  • Morrissy Raced four wide without cover throughout. Apprentice Lachlan King reported the colt hung out placing him at a disadvantage in the straight.
  • Write Enuff Raced fiercely through the early and middle stages.
  • Battle Master Commenced awkwardly. Over-raced through the middle stages.

Race 6 GEOFF MURPHY HANDICAP - 1100 metres:

  • Thrillster Raced wide without cover throughout.
  • Tropezina Raced three wide without cover.
  • Lady Horseowner Over-raced through the early stages.
  • Voila Passing the 800m was checked to avoid the heels of Thrillster (L. Riordan) which shifted in before being straightened. Liam Riordan was severely reprimanded.
  • Ray's Dream On arrival to the racecourse was examined by the RVL veterinary surgeon having suffered abrasions to its chest en route in the float and passed fit to run.
  • Golden Halo Held up from the 400m until passing the 100m.
  • Irresistable Girl Commenced awkwardly. Raced four wide without cover.
  • Tofane (NZ) Held up from the 400m until shifting out over heels to obtain clear running inside the 100m. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 7 LADBROKES VICTORIA HANDICAP 1400 METRES:

  • Fastnet Tempest (IRE) Held up from the 300m until approaching the 100m. Near the 50m was steadied to avoid the heels of Streets of Avalon (C. Douglas) which shifted in under pressure. Clayton Douglas was severely reprimanded.
  • Streets of Avalon Laid in under pressure in the straight.
  • Zebulon (NZ) Near the 150m was steadied when tightened for room between Fastnet Tempest (IRE) and Kemono (JPN) which was taken in by Manolo Blahniq (NZ).
  • Sircconi Rider Jamie Mott reported that the horse failed to finish off as expected. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
  • Kemono (JPN) Near the 150m was checked when tightened for room between Zebulon (NZ) and Manolo Blahniq (NZ) (D.  Dunn) which shifted in when not sufficiently clear.

Dwayne Dunn (Manolo Blahniq) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a), the carelessness being that near the 150m he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of Kemono (JPN),thereby tightening Kemono (JPN) in onto Zebulon which resulted in Kemono (JPN) having to be checked and Zebulon having to be steadied. Dwayne Dunn had his licence to ride in races suspended for a period to commence at midnight 24 April 2019 and to expire at midnight 3 May, a total of 10 race meetings (2 metropolitan, 8 provincial). Race 8 LE PINE FUNERALS EASTER CUP - 2000 metres:

  • Night's Watch (NZ) Hampered and carried wide near the 500m. Passing the 200m shifted out towards Red Alto (L.  Nolen) and consequently had to be checked off that gelding's heels which had also shifted in. Luke Nolen was reprimanded. Rider John Allen reported that the gelding travelled well, however failed to respond when placed under pressure. A post‑race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the offside hind leg and a veterinary certificate is required prior to racing again.
  • Red Alto Hampered and carried wide near the 500m.
  • Furrion (GB) Change of tactics, to be ridden closer. Settled midfield.
  • Octabello After slipping over in the mounting yard was examined on arrival at the barriers and passed fit to run. Over‑raced through the early and middle stages. Shifted out near the 500m to avoid Magnapal and in so doing took Night's Watch and Red Alto out off the track.
  • Magnapal Passing the 600m sustained a serious racing injury and was humanely euthanized. This incident will be referred to the Equine Welfare and Veterinary Department.
  • Observational (GB) Change of tactics, to be ridden more forward. Rider Beau Mertens stated as the gelding commenced awkwardly, despite his intention to settle forward, he therefore elected to settle back at the rear of the field.

Race 9 LADBROKES ODDS BOOST HANDICAP - 1200 metres:

  • Dollar For Dollar Hampered at the start by Haunted which shifted in.
  • Working From Home Fractious in barrier. Underwent a veterinary examination and was passed fit to run.
  • Superhard Rider Michael Dee reported that the gelding was not suited by the tempo. A post‑race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
  • Redcore Eased over the concluding stages when disappointed for clear running.
  • Break My Stride Slow to begin.
