Vet Notes

  • My Biddy (Race 2) - A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.
  • Invincible Al (Race 3) - A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be sore over the back. A veterinary certificate is required before racing again.

Penalties & Fines

  • Apprentice Ethan Brown, rider of Arancini pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a), the carelessness being that near the 1000m, he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of Begood Toya Mother (D. Bates) which had to be checked to avoid his heels. Ethan Brown had his permit to ride in races suspended for a period to commence at midnight, 21 May 2109, to expire at midnight 27 May, a total of 8 race meetings (2 metropolitan, 6 provincial). In assessing penalty Stewards took into account his guilty plea, candid evidence, reasonably good record and that the carelessness was in the low range.
  • Apprentice Lewis German,  Boom Time  was issued with a fine of $200 under AR132(6)(c) for using the whip unnecessarily on a horse that was out of contention. A post‑race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Summary of Races 

Race 1 HUGH BOWMAN HALL OF FAME TROPHY - 1400 metres:

  • St Edward's Crown After arriving at the start the filly was examined by the veterinary surgeon at the request of rider J. Bowditch. Acting on the advice of the veterinary surgeon that St Edward's Crown was lame in the right hind leg, stewards ordered the withdrawal of the filly at 11.40 am.

All monies bet for a win and/or place and concession betting on the late scratching to be refunded. All successful bets on horses prior to time of withdrawal are subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of the ticket:

Win Bets 16 cents

Place Bets (For Winner) - 15 cents

Place Bets (For 2nd) - 15 cents

Place Bets (For 3rd) - 13 cents

All monies bet after the Stewards' declaration of withdrawal to be paid at face value of ticket.

Following the race, St Edward's Crown was subjected to a further examination by the veterinary surgeon who said that at this time the horse was not displaying any signs of lameness.

  • Leven Lass (NZ) Jumped away awkwardly and lost ground. Restrained passing the 1200m to avoid the heels of The Pugilist.
  • La Lucciola Knuckled on jumping away.
  • Feign Jumped away awkwardly and was then bumped by The Pugilist which shifted in on jumping away. Held up from the 500m before shifting out to gain clear running near the 200m.
  • Fabulanski Over-raced in the early and middle stages.
  • The Pugilist Steadied near the 1100 to avoid the heels of Three Legs In which was also being restrained.

Race 2 BRENT THOMSON HALL OF FAME TROPHY - 1400 metres:

  • Ocean Deep (NZ) Raced three wide without cover. Apprentice Michael Poy reported that after racing wide without cover his mount failed to run on.
  • Special Alert Near the 1100m commenced to over-race. Severely checked approaching the 1000m to avoid the heels of Josephine Sea which was being restrained to avoid the heels of Kings Brook.
  • So Far Sokool (NZ) Got its head up and raced ungenerously passing the 1200m and had to be restrained off the heels of Absolute Heaven.
  • My Biddy Performed below market expectations. Apprentice Stephanie Thornton reported that the quick back-up and racing over a shorter distance may have been detrimental to its chances. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.
  • Josephine Sea After the mare appeared to be galloped on near the 1000m A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
  • Kings Brook Steadied approaching the 1000m to avoid the heels of So Far Sokool (NZ).
  • Ice Girl Got its head up when having to be checked approaching the 1000m.
  • Pria Eclipse Near the 300m obtained a narrow run to the inside of My Biddy and as a result of this raced in restricted room for some distance. Performed below market expectations. Rider Teodore Nugent reported that in his opinion the mare would be better suited over a further distance. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 3 PAT LALOR HALL OF FAME TROPHY - 1000 metres:

  • Invincible Al Jumped away awkwardly apprentice Nathan Punch could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be sore over the back. A veterinary certificate is required before racing again.
  • Moonlover Trainer Matt Laurie advised that he could not explain the poor performance of the mare at its last start at Mornington on 23 March and that after a let-up, Moonlover had trialled well and he was expecting the mare to perform well today.
  • Superhard Hung in under pressure in the straight.
  • Reward With Return On jumping away was hampered when tightened for room between Chat to Maggie and Invincible Al which jumped away awkwardly and shifted out.

Race 4 HALL MARK HALL OF FAME TROPHY - 1400 metres:

  • Seberate Underwent a veterinary examination at the barriers and was passed fit to start. Apprentice Lewis German could offer no explanation for the gelding's performance. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
  • Spielberg Raced three wide without cover.
  • Boots Tarrington Over-raced in the early and middle stages.
  • Crockett Slow to begin.

Race 5 NATIONAL HALL OF FAME HANDICAP - 1400 metres:

  • Our Bottino Raced four wide without cover.
  • Kentucky Breeze Held up from the 400m before gaining clear running approaching the 200m.
  • Sunday Pray Near the 150m when giving ground was tightened for room by Arancini (E. Brown) which shifted in before being straightened. Ethan Brown was reprimanded under AR131(a).
  • Enbihaar Apprentice Lewis German could offer no explanation for the filly's performance. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
  • Eagle Ridge Raced three wide without cover.
  • Begood Toya Mother Eased near the 1100 to avoid the heels of Sunday Pray (N. Beriman) which shifted in. Nikita Beriman was severely reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(a). Near the 1000m had to be checked to avoid the heels of Arancini (E. Brown) which shifted in.

  • Tysonic Change of tactics, to be ridden more forward. Settled at the rear of the field. Had to be steadied passing the 1000m when racing in restricted room to the inside of Pierro Belle.
  • Sure Knee Jumped away awkwardly.
  • Fidelia Slow to begin.
  • Pierro Belle Slow to begin. Passing the 1000m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Putting on Airs.
  • Reflect The Stars Slow to begin. Raced three wide without cover.
  • Chilula (NZ) Jumped away awkwardly. Over-raced in the early and middle stages.
  • Mrs Sippy Raced three wide without cover.

Race 7 THE MAHOGANY CHALLENGE HANDICAP - 2000 metres:

  • Phoneme Raced three wide without cover.
  • Predecessor Rider Craig Newitt reported that the colt resented racing inside horses. A post‑race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
  • Igniter Laid in under pressure in the straight.
  • Immelmann Underwent a veterinary examination at the barriers after being fractious in the barriers and passed fit to run.
  • Awaytoff Laid in under pressure in the straight.

Race 8 JOHN MEAGHER HALL OF FAME TROPHY - 1400 metres:

  • Mr Marathon Man (GB) Over-raced in the early and middle stages.
  • Masculino Raced keenly in the early stages. Apprentice Lachlan King reported that he was not disappointed with the performance. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
  • One More Try Jumped away awkwardly. Steadied at the 300m to avoid the heels of Husson Eagle which shifted out away from Mamzelle Tess which in turn then shifted out away from Spanner Head. Apprentice Fred Kersley was severely reprimanded under AR211 for weighing in in excess of half a kilo of his declared weight.

Race 9 VO ROGUE HALL OF FAME TROPHY - 2000 metres:

  • Boom Time Change of tactics, to be ridden further. Led. Apprentice Lewis German could offer no explanation for the performance. Lewis German was issued with a fine of $200 under AR132(6)(c) for using the whip unnecessarily on a horse that was out of contention. A post‑race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
  • Mahamedeis Over-raced in the early stages.
  • Willi Willi Rider Nikita Beriman reported that the gelding was disappointing and may be better suited to a track with more give. A post‑race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
  • Lycurgus Rider Zac Spain reported that the gelding which was second up from a break and over a longer journey felt the run over the concluding stages. A post‑race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
