  • Stephen Baster (Illuminaire) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a), the carelessness being that approaching the winning post, he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Feared Eyes, resulting in that filly having to be checked. Stephen Baster had his licence to ride in races suspended for a period to commence midnight 10 June 2019 and to expire midnight 21 June, a total of 11 race meetings (2 metropolitan, 9 provincial). In assessing penalty Stewards took into account his guilty plea, record and that the carelessness was in the mid-range.

Summary of Races 

Race 1 WHISKY WINE & FIRE HANDICAP - 1200 metres:

  • Call Me Shamus Began awkwardly.
  • Celestial Warrior Slow to begin.
  • Zee Hoarder Raced tight shortly after the start between Wiseman and Desert Dreamer. Rider Craig Williams reported that the gelding, which was having its first race start, raced greenly and hung out for the majority of the race.
  • Can't Be Done Laid out under pressure in the straight.
  • Wilmot Pass Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Raced wide without cover from the 700m. Passing the 150m shifted in under pressure towards the heels of Can't Be Done. Over the concluding stages awkwardly placed close to the heels of Can't Be Done which shifted out approaching the winning post.
  • Brazen Brando Raced wide without cover. Rider Ben Allen could offer no explanation for the poor performance. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

Race 2 LADBROKES BACK YOURSELF HANDICAP 2000 metres:

  • Tysonic Change of tactics, attempt to ride more forward from better barrier. Settled behind the leaders.
  • American In Paris Slow into stride.
  • Racing Paradise (NZ) Bumped at the start with Dalmatia.
  • Dalmatia Bumped at the start with Racing Paradise (NZ).
  • Igniter Raced wide without cover. Rider Jamie Mott reported that the colt failed to handle today's soft track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.
  • Titan Blinders Rider Stephen Baster could offer no explanation for the gelding's poor performance after it led and weakened. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.
  • Skyway Star Held up for a clear run from the 300m until approaching the 200m. Rider Craig Williams reported that the filly would be better suited to distances longer than today's race. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.
  • Doroza (NZ) Passing the 300m raced tight between Igniter and Dogmatic (D. Dunn) which shifted out from behind Tysonic to improve its position. Dwayne Dunn was severely reprimanded.

Race 3 GRUNT STANDING @ YULONG HANDICAP - 1440 metres:

  • Bianconi Magic Slow into stride.
  • Hypnos When laying in near the 300m had to be steadied away from the heels of Ligulate which shifted out slightly at this point.
  • Blinder Rider Dwayne Dunn reported that the colt was not concentrating in its races and has recommended to connections that it be gelded.
  • Asgard Massif Raced keenly in the lead.
  • Mr Genoa Raced wide without cover. Rider Jye McNeil reported that the gelding stopped quickly from the 400m and was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities. Stewards will follow up with the stable.

Race 4 LONG FINE PLATE - 1600 metres:

  • Royal Thunder Underwent a veterinary examination at the barrier after being kicked by another runner and was passed fit to run.
  • Lord Durante Fractious in barrier stall prior to the starter releasing the field. Began awkwardly.
  • Bag Raider (JPN) Slow to begin. Inconvenienced approaching the 100m when awkwardly placed close to the heels of Sam Slick which shifted out under pressure. Rider Jamie Mott reported that the gelding did not handle today's soft track conditions.
  • Paremuus Boy Slow to begin.
  • Rebellious Lord Jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
  • Special Diva Raced wide without cover.

Race 5 MRC MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL HANDICAP - 1100 metres:

  • William Thomas Slow to begin.
  • Ozi Choice Slow to begin. Near the 1000m steadied from the heels of Enigman (T. Nugent) which shifted in before being straightened by its rider. Apprentice Teodore Nugent was reprimanded.
  • Jungle Edge When questioned regarding her tactics in the straight, apprentice Chelsea Hall stated she was instructed by trainer M. Bell to allow her mount to race away from the fence in the straight as in his opinion this was the superior part of the track.
  • Malibu Style Near the 1000m momentarily steadied from the heels of Jungle Edge (C. Hall) which shifted in when not sufficiently clear. Apprentice Chelsea Hall was reprimanded.
  • Enigman Raced wide without cover.
  • Holy Blade Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.

Race 6 QMS MEDIA HANDICAP - 1100 metres:

  • Lady Vega Slow to begin.
  • Angel Lass Began awkwardly.
  • Voila Slow into stride. Held up for a short distance passing the 250m. When improving over the concluding stages was steadied from the heels of Pariano and as a result was not ridden out fully to the end of the race.
  • Pariano Raced three wide without cover.
  • Thine Is The Power Raced four wide without cover.
  • Graceful Storm Raced keenly near the 700m and got its head up when steadied off the heels of Angel Lass.
  • Propelle Rider Craig Williams reported that the filly travelled well in the early and middle stages, however was disappointing when it failed to run on in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities. Stewards will follow up with the stable.
  • Feared Eyes Difficult to load. Trainer David Brideoake was advised that the filly will be required to jump out to the satisfaction of Stewards before being permitted to race again.When giving ground approaching the winning post was checked when tightened for room between Du Well and Illuminaire (S. Baster). Rider Andrew Mallyon reported that the filly travelled well in the lead, however gave ground in the straight. He noted that the filly was first up from a spell and would derive benefit from today's race. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

Race 7 LADBROKES ODDS BOOST HANDICAP - 1440 metres:

  • Wazzenme Slow into stride. Apprentice Michael Poy could offer no explanation for the poor performance. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.
  • Heavenward Raced keenly in the early stages.
  • Romancer (NZ) Raced wide without cover.
  • General Custer (NZ) Near the 200m was disappointed for a run to the inside of Heavenward.
  • Toosbuy Had difficulty gaining a clear run from the 300m until passing the 200m.

Race 8 WHISKY WINE & FIRE VOLVO CARS BRIGHTON HANDICAP 1200 metres:

  • Atlantica Slow to begin, then hampered shortly after when tightened for room between Nariko and Smart Coupe which shifted out.
  • Neurotic Bumped at the start by Nariko.
  • Queen Annabel Raced wide without cover.
  • Petrelle Raced wide without cover.
  • Smart Coupe Apprentice Stephanie Thornton could offer no explanation for the performance. A post‑race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.
  • All About Nicci Held up from the 400m to the 200m.
  • Miss Vixen Was held up from the 400m before shifting out to gain clear running passing the 200m.
  • Rewarding Laughter When giving ground near the 200m was checked when tightened for room between Miss Vixen (L. Currie) which shifted out after it improved to the outside of Cath's Village which shifted out slightly, and All About Nicci. Stewards took into account the fact that S. Baster was easing Rewarding Laughter prior to Miss Vixen shifting out. In all the circumstances, Luke Currie was severely reprimanded.
  • Nariko Was held up from the 200m until the winning post and as a result went to the line not being fully tested. Apprentice Lachlan King reported that the mare may be better suited with the addition of blinkers. A post‑race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

Race 9 CATANACH'S JEWELLERS HANDICAP 2000 metres:

  • Dark Eyes Change of tactics, attempt to lead. Led.
  • Observational (GB) Slow to begin. Raced wide without cover from the 900m.
  • Boom Time Difficult to load. The Hayes/Dabernig stable were notified that a warning was placed on the gelding.
  • Home By Midnight (NZ) When questioned in relation to the riding tactics when the gelding was further forward than at its previous starts, apprentice Mitchell Aitken explained that after jumping away he was of the opinion that he was going to be caught wide, so he therefore elected to ride his mount along early, however found himself further forward than anticipated. Mitchell Aitken was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out to the end of the race.
  • Morton's Fork Rider Craig Williams reported that the gelding may not have handled today's soft track conditions. A post‑race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.
  • Alward (IRE) Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
  • Beau Balmain (GER) Michael Dee was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out to the end of the race.
