Magic Millions Three-Year-Old Guineas 1400m

The first of two million dollar races on the card is the Magic Millions Three-Year-Old over 1400m and unbelievably two of the favoured runners have drawn the outside barriers, throwing the race wide open.

MAHUTA (barrier 20) strung three wins together over the Melbourne Spring Carnival after a Maiden win at Kyneton in October, culminating in a dominant Group Two win in the Sandown Guineas.

FLIPPANT (barrier 19) got the better of EGYPTION SYMBOL in rapid time in the lead-up race at Wyong, a race that has already proved to be a good form reference.

Any poor luck for the favourites will help value runners TYPING (best run 5th in the Group 2 Sires' Produce), SHOTACROSS THE BOW (best run last start 4th in the Group 3 Vo Rogue) and of course EGYPTION SYMBOL, who ran an unlucky 3rd in the Vo Rogue after finishing behind FLIPPANT.

The Verdict

  • Best Bet - FLIPPANT at $4.8
  • Value Bet - TYPING at $41

Impressive winner - Flippant wins at Wyong on her way to the Gold Coast

Magic Millions Two-Year-Old Classic 1200m

The betting action is all focussed on the Snowden-trained CAPITALIST (by WRITTEN TYCOON), who is well into the red. He has been dominant in both his wins in Sydney and sets a high benchmark for the others to match, a horse with speed, professionalism and a will to win.

The tempo in such a high-pressure race for the youngsters is sure to be STRONG to FAIR, with front-running types SLUMBER PARTY (by SNITZEL) and ZELADY’S NIGHT OUT (by MYBOYCHARLIE) drawing gates 20 and 19 respectively.

That race set-up means there is some risk for the favourite from barrier 2, especially if the ground off the rails is favoured (the Gold Coast often has bias).

Talented youngsters ZELADY’S NIGHT OUT, NICCOLANCE (by NICCONI), JUST ORM (by FALVELON) and FARAWAY TOWN (by NOT A SINGLE DOUBT) are all chances if Blake Shinn does get 'bailed up' on the inside.

With the sales taking place during the week, it's interesting to note the top four prices from last year too. CAPITALIST sold for $165,000 and outsider ARTY PARDEE cost only $6,500.

  1. SLUMBER PARTY $620,000 Snitzel Filly by Hokuspokus
  2. NIKITAS $280,000 Snitzel Colt by Mine Game
  3. FARAWAY TOWN $200,000 Not A Single Doubt Filly by London Calling
  4. MOOSHAKISSA $200,000 Duporth Filly by Electric Dreams

The Verdict

  • Best Bet - CAPITALIST at $1.65
  • Value Bets - ZELADY’S NIGHT OUT $12, NICCOLANCE $10, JUST ORM $18 and FARAWAY TOWN $51

Big day awaits - Capitalist's connections will be hoping for clear running from barrier 2
