Unlucky Runners

  • Mount Panorama (Race 2) – when questioned, rider T Berry stated that the colt was standing quietly in the barriers, but began slowly, missing the start by two lengths. He added that, with no pace on, Mount Panorama, overraced in the middle stages and at the entrance to the straight he had no option but to improve inside runners, where in his opinion the going is inferior. T Berry stated that when he asked Mount Panorama to improve the colt was unable to do so in the soft going and was inclined to lay out under pressure in the latter stages of the straight to race on the rails. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

Vet Notes

  • Idance (Race 8) – rider T Berry reported he was not happy with the gelding's action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be mildly lame in the off foreleg. Co-trainer Mr M Hawkes was asked to provide a veterinary clearance.
  • Tree Of Jesse (Race 8) – bled for the first time. Trainer Mr J Cummings was advised of the requirements of AR53A that the mare would be barred from racing for three months.
  • Frank Who (Race 9) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off foreleg.

Penalties & Fines

  • Mr D Williams, trainer of Shutter Bug (Race 3) – a veterinary examination of the mare, which arrived on course at approximately 1.20pm (35 minutes to race time), revealed it had sweated up. Taking into account the prolonged journey and the short timeframe before the race, the Stewards withdrew Shutter Bug at 1.22pm. When interviewed, trainer Mr D Williams stated that he had allowed 1 hour and 55 minutes for the float journey from his Goulburn stables to Randwick Racecourse and, whilst he was held up in traffic, he was unaware that it was 35 minutes to race time when he arrived on track (LR36 requires horses in the metropolitan area to be on courses no later than two hours prior to racing). Mr Williams was fined $200 as the Stewards were not satisfied that he had allowed sufficient travelling time for the journey.
  • App. L Grace, booked rider for Red Hot Dane (Race 5)  – As App. L Grace was overweight, App. J Innes Junior was substituted as the rider of the mare. App. Grace was fined $300 under LR70. Slow to begin.
  • T Berry, rider of River Wild (Race 6) – T Berry, rider of the winner, was fined $300 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip in excess of five occasions prior to the 100m (two additional).

Summary of Races

RACE 1: Global Independent QC & Inspection Maroubra Mile 1600m

  • Monton – overraced in the early and middle stages and passing the 1000m had to be steadied away from the heels of Great Esteem.
  • Great Esteem – rider B Avdulla stated that he was able to dictate terms and the gelding travelled well until the 600m, however, he was of the opinion that it did not handle the rain affected track conditions, was immediately under pressure from that point and did not run on. He added that, whilst Great Esteem had established wet track form, he believed that it was in an inferior class to today's race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed abrasions to both hind bumpers. Co-trainer Mr Peter Snowden agreed with the assessment of B Avdulla that Great Esteem did not handle the rain affected going and undertook to report back if anything is amiss with the gelding subsequent to the race.
  • Snippets Land – when questioned concerning the improved performance of the winner, co-trainer Mr Peter Snowden stated that the gelding had benefited from recent racing and was third up today. He said, moreover, Snippets Land was dropping substantially in weight and appreciated the soft going. He added, although the gelding finished 8th at Rosehill at its most recent start on 2 January 2016, he felt there was some merit in its run as it was obliged to cover ground.

  • Painted Firetail – when questioned concerning the tactics he adopted, rider J McDonald stated he had early looked to take up a position one off on the back of Barood, however, when Painted Firetail was inclined to overrace and Barood was coming back to him, rather than contest a position with Wide Acclaim to his outside, he elected to allow his mount to stride up on the inside of the heels of Barood. He said thereafter he was not in a position to make a run wider on the track, as he would have had to ease back more than a length to get to the outside of the heels of Barood to make a run five or six wide. J McDonald added that in the straight he was never held up and was able to angle off five or six horses, where Painted Firetail ran home solidly.
