Summary of Races

RACE 1: Sky High Stakes (Group 3) 2000m

  • Hartnell – late withdrawal at 8.45am, on veterinary advice, due to the gelding sustaining a capped hock to the near-hind.
  • Messene – correct weight was delayed when rider T Berry viewed the video to see if there were grounds for objection against the winner Sir John Hawkwood (B Spriggs). When he was satisfied there were not sufficient grounds for objection and the Stewards were also satisfied, correct weight was declared. Approximately two strides from the post was bumped by Sir John Hawkwood (B Spriggs), which was inclined to lay in. B Spriggs was advised to ensure that he exercises more care in similar circumstances.
  • Magic Hurricane – when questioned regarding the gelding racing off the pace today, compared to its last start when it led in the Chipping Norton Stakes on 27 February 2016, rider B Avdulla stated that he was under instructions to ride his mount where comfortable, either lead or with cover, however, not to dig it up early. He added, when it was apparent that Who Shot Thebarman, which was drawn inside him, was ridden positively, he elected to take a trailing position. B Avdulla further stated that Magic Hurricane travelled well up to the 600m, however, was immediately under pressure and he felt that something may have been amiss with the gelding. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Mr D Beadman, representing trainer Mr J O'Shea, undertook to report back on the progress of Magic Hurricane subsequent to the race.

RACE 2: Café Culture + Insitu Pago Pago Stakes (Group 2) 1200m

  • Mount Panorama – jumped awkwardly. Held up rounding the home turn. Laid out under pressure over the final 100m.
  • Mediterranean – jumped awkwardly. Held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight.
  • Attention – jumped awkwardly and lost ground. Overraced in the early stages.
  • The Reverend Demon – laid out rounding the home turn. Continued to lay out under pressure in the straight.
  • Potent Force – near the 200m had to be steadied away from the heels of Chimboraa (S Clipperton) which, when racing greenly, shifted out under pressure when insufficiently clear. S Clipperton was reprimanded and advised to stop riding and take corrective action sooner than he did on this occasion.

RACE 3: Bede Murray Magic Night Stakes (Group 2) 1200m

  • Calliope - jumped awkwardly and lost ground.
  • Fabvier – crowded on jumping. Shortly after the start had to be checked away from the heels of Larapineta when crowded by Brulee.
  • Brulee – crowded on jumping.
  • Kentucky Miss – near the 900m had to be steadied away from the heels of Suspenders (C Reith), which shifted in, before its rider relieved the pressure. C Reith was advised to exercise care.

RACE 4: APN Outdoor Handicap 1900m

  • Napoleon – slow to begin.
  • Off The Rails – approaching the 800m made contact with Another Cocktail, as Off The Rails shifted out to improve around Word Of Mouth.
  • Ghost Protocol – approaching the 250m steadied away from heels and altered course to the inside of the heels of Fira to continue into clear running. When questioned regarding the improved performance of the gelding, as compared to its last start in the Quirindi Cup on 19 February 2016, stable representative Mr S Perry stated Ghost Protocol had not appreciated the firm track on that day and, after being obliged to make a sustained run under its top weight of 62.5 kilos, did not finish the race off. He added that Ghost Protocol had improved with additional fitness from that run and leading into today's race (its third start this campaign) and he attributed the drop in weight, the addition of blinkers and the race being run at a genuine tempo as being the principal factors for the improved performance.
  • Hursley – ran out abruptly near the 250m.
  • Word Of Mouth – rider S Clipperton stated the gelding was not suited by the pace slackening in the middle stages and he therefore allowed his mount to stride forward, however, was a beaten horse shortly after entering the straight and was most disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Mr Paul Snowden, representing the training partnership of T & L Corstens, stated that the stable felt that the rider had made his run too early on the gelding and it then failed to finish the race off.
  • Another Cocktail – rider J McDonald was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using the whip on six occasions (one more than permitted by the rule) prior to the 100m.

RACE 5: Smooth FM Maruice McCarten Stakes (Group 3) 1100m

  • Decision Time – lost its off-fore plate in running.
  • Craftiness – rider C Brown stated his mount travelled in the early stages, however, from the 500m it was under pressure and he felt the gelding may not have handled the firmer track conditions, as compared with its first up run at Randwick on 6 February 2016 on a Soft (6). A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr J Pride will be asked to provide a veterinary clearance, including the results of an endoscopic examination.
  • Bachman – when questioned regarding the tactics he adopted rounding the home turn and in particular as to why he elected to angle back to the inside of Decision Time when he was positioned outside the heels of that runner, K McEvoy explained that he did not want to cover additional ground and he was also aware to do so he would have been positioned on the back of On A Shining Star, the outsider in the field. He added that shortly after straightening he improved to the inside of Decision Time, however, Tahitian Black -  shifted out slightly and he was disappointed for a run between Tahitian Black and Decision Time and, consequently, had to shift out to improve into clear running, which he obtained near the 200m. K McEvoy was told, in the opinion of the Stewards, whilst his tactics were reasonable, his better option would have been to remain to the outside of the heels of Decision Time rounding the home turn, which would have afforded him the opportunity to continue into clear running earlier in the straight.

RACE 6: Cellarbrations Phar Lap Stakes (Group 2) 1500m

  • Old North – jumped awkwardly and lost ground. Had some difficulty obtaining clear running between Hattori Hanzo and Sacred Eye approaching the 200m.
  • Torgersen – approaching the 1400m linking up with the course proper had to be steadied away from the heels of Sacred Eye, which ran out.
  • Sacred Eye – passing the 1000m was briefly crowded between Man Of Choice and Hattori Hanzo, which improved around Sacred Eye at that point. Near the 150m was bumped and taken wider by Old North. Rider B Prebble explained that he shifted his weight in the saddle passing the 800m in an attempt to assist the filly and change legs. Rider B Prebble was fined $300 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using the whip on six occasions (one more than permitted by the rule) prior to the 100m and was also reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(i) for using consecutive strikes prior to the 100m.
  • Italy – inclined to lay in for some distance passing the 300m and then was taken wider as Torgersen shifted out under pressure.

RACE 7: Coolmore Classic (Group 1) 1500m

  • Vergara – jumped awkwardly.
  • Politeness – jumped awkwardly, shifted in and hampered Amicus. Dipped linking up with the course proper near the 1400m. Rider T Berry stated that his mount had a particularly hard run and tracked wide throughout, but also did not seem to appreciate the firmer track today. A post-race veterinary examination of Politeness, which weakened after being obliged to travel side throughout, revealed the mare to be displaying a poor post-race recovery.
  • Pearls – dipped on jumping.
  • Telepathic – slow to begin.
  • Peeping – S Clipperton, rider of the winner, pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using the whip on six occasions prior to the 100m (one more than permitted by the rule). Taking into account S Clipperton's poor record and it being a Group 1 race, he was fined $500.

RACE 8: Ajax Stakes (Group 2) 1500m

  • Red Excitement – late withdrawal at 8.35am when it struck its near foreleg returning from the pool this morning.
  • Good Project – knuckled badly on jumping away. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be lame in the near foreleg. Mr C Duckworth, representing trainer Mr C Waller, was asked to provide a veterinary clearance prior to Good Project racing again.
  • Kool Kompany – slow to begin.
  • Generalife – raced keenly in the early stages.
  • Rocky Sturdy – when questioned regarding the performance of the horse, J Collett stated he attempted to hold his position early, but was unable to do so and, therefore, settled back in the field. He added Rock Sturdy travelled well, however, was under pressure from approaching the turn and was disappointing from that point. J Collett said the principal factors he could attribute to the disappointing performance were that Rock Sturdy was second up and may not have appreciated the firmer surface today. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be coughing. Trainer Mr J Pride was asked to provide a veterinary clearance, including the results of an endoscopic examination, prior to Rock Sturdy racing again.
  • Puccini – when questioned regarding the performance, rider B Prebble stated that the horse may not have been suited settling up on the pace today, however, he rode his mount a little more forward because of the anticipated slow tempo. He added, as a result, when the tempo was only moderate in the middle stages, Puccini overraced and was flat-footed when asked for an effort in the straight. B Prebble said, in his opinion, Puccini would be better suited ridden more conservatively at its next start. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Miss L Purchase concurred with the views of rider B Prebble and undertook to report if there was anything amiss with Puccini subsequent to the race.
  • Alpha Beat – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 9: TAB More Than Just Winning Handicap 1350m

  • Bold Circle – jumped awkwardly and shortly after was bumped by El Doute, which shifted in after jumping awkwardly. Approaching the 200m had to alter course to the inside of Dragon Flyer and was then unable to proceed when held up on the back of El Doute. Bold Circle then had to work to the outside of runners to continue into clear ground approaching the 100m.
  • Turbulent Jet – knuckled over badly on jumping.
  • Collaboration – crowded on jumping.
  • Lady Le Fay – crowded on jumping between Lofty's Menu and Collaboration. For a short distance passing the 100m raced in restricted room to the inside of El Doute and could not be fully tested.
  • Open Book – approaching the first turn near the 1600m had to be steadied away from the heels of Harry Hotspur, which laid in away from Nite Rocker.
  • Dragon Flyer – near the 300m the gelding, which had been held up, was disappointed for a run between Nite Rocker and Harry Hotspur and then had to be checked off the heels of Nite Rocker before shifting out across the heels of those two runners to obtain clear running passing the 200m.
  • Hollywood Bound – A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which raced wide without cover throughout, did not reveal any abnormalities.
