Summary of Races

RACE 1: E-Group Security Handicap 1400m

  • Agent – bounded in the air on jumping and lost ground. At the 1200m had to be steadied for room when taken in by Federal, which was taken in by Dragon Flyer (T Angland), which shifted in when not quite clear. T Angland was advised to ensure he leaves sufficient room for runners to his inside. Agent raced greenly in the straight and was inclined to lay in.
  • Vite Loni – jumped awkwardly and then blundered a short distance after the start.
  • Sabkhat – knuckled over on jumping.
  • Dragon Flyer – rider T Angland could offer no tangible excuse for the disappointing performance. He stated that the gelding travelled well in the run until the home turn, however, when asked for an effort did not respond and dipped rounding the home turn. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Roaring To Win – rider App. W Costin explained, after being crossed by Sabkhat approaching the first turn, she had to steady away from runners' heels and, as a result, was obliged to travel wide throughout. She added, following the tough run Roaring To Win made the home turn awkwardly and did not run on when asked for an effort in the straight. A postrace veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mr Peter Snowden indicated the gelding will be spelled.
  • Sonic Swish – rider B Avdulla stated the intention was to be in the first three or four runners, however, when his mount was not the best to begin and dipped a short distance after the start, he elected to ride it off the pace and obtain cover, rather than attempt to push forward, as the gelding was wearing blinkers for the first time which, in his opinion, may have caused it to overrace.

RACE 2: The Schweppervescence (Group 3) (Registered Name: T.L. Baillieu Handicap) Handicap 1400m

  • All In Rhythm – jumped awkwardly. When weakening near the 250m was bumped by Prized Icon (G Schofield), which shifted out around Attention to find clear running. G Schofield explained his mount then continued to run out for a short distance, however, he was told to exercise care when attempting similar manoeuvres. Rider P Wells stated, in his opinion, his mount, which was stepping up in grade and in distance, did not run out a strong 1400m after he was obliged to make some use of it in the early stages to cross and obtain a position one off behind the leaders. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Wine – jumped awkwardly.
  • Hutcho – slow to begin, then dipped shortly after the start. Hutcho was then hampered when Wine shifted out a short distance after the start.
  • Crown Him – shortly after the start was tightened for room between Wine and Moqueen, which shifted out slightly. Passing the 1000m had to be steadied off the heels of Prized Icon (G Schofield), which shifted in when insufficiently clear. G Schofield was reprimanded and advised to ensure he is two lengths clear when shifting ground. Crown Him then overraced for a short distance thereafter.
  • Lasqueti Spirit – became unbalanced when it ran in away from Taj Mahal (B Avdulla), which shifted in slightly near the 250m. B Avdulla was advised to exercise care.
  • Crafty Cop – rider T Berry desisted from riding his mount out close to the line when the winner, Attention, was inclined to lay in.
  • Reinforced – rider B Prebble stated his mount never travelled comfortably when racing in between horses in the second half of the field and made contact with Lasqueti Spirit on a number of occasions in the middle stages. Reinforced bumped Lasqueti Spirit approaching the 250m.
  • Rock And Swing – rider H Bowman stated his mount was inclined to overrace in a slowly run event. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr J Cummings added the only excused he could offer was that Rock And Swing was not suited by the moderate tempo. He undertook to report back to Stewards as to the future race plans for the colt.
  • Moqueen – lost its near-fore plate in running.

RACE 3: The Daily Telegraph Neville Sellwood Stakes (Group 3) 2000m

  • Messene – lost its near-fore plate in running.

RACE 4: TAB Star Kingdom Stakes (Group 3) 1200m

  • Malaguerra – held up for clear running until approaching the 250m.
  • Angels Beach – hampered approaching the 250m when Coolring shifted out abruptly under pressure, before being corrected by its rider, B Avdulla. B Avdulla was advised in similar circumstances he would be expected to react quicker than he did on this occasion. When questioned regarding the performance, rider T Clark stated, in his opinion, the mare raced flat today second up from its second placing at this track a fortnight ago. He added in the middle stages he restrained his mount in order to assist the mare run out the 1200m, however, this may not have been to the mare's advantage and Angels Beach was disappointing when placed under pressure in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr G Ryan reported Angel's Beach will be freshened up and undertook to report back on the progress of the mare subsequent to the race.
  • Coolring – inclined to lay out under pressure over the concluding stages.
  • Alberto Magic – Rider J Collett stated that the gelding laid in under pressure over the final 150m and, in his opinion, although a winner at this track over 1200m, he noted that the track was rain affected that day and it was also in an inferior class to today's race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer Mr A Denham was advised a veterinary clearance would be required before the gelding's next start.

RACE 5: Tulloch Stakes (Group 2) 2000m

  • Tatoosh – bumped by Balmain Boy approaching the 1900m, resulting in both runners becoming unbalanced.
  • Old North – near the 350m was crowded when tightened for room by Sovereign Nation, which shifted in.
  • Man Of Choice – checked approaching the 250m when taken out onto the hindquarter of Alfden, which became unbalanced. M Walker pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that he directed his mount out around the heels of Hierarchal near the 250m and, in so doing, made heavy contact with Man Of Choice, which was taken out and had to be checked when tightened for room between Sovereign Nation and Alfden. M Walker's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Monday, 28 March 2016 and to expire on Friday, 8 April 2016, on which day he may ride. Rider B Shinn explained he had to make some use of the gelding in the early stages, however, it was under pressure from as far out as the home turn and, although Man Of Choice sustained interference in the straight, it was a beaten horse. B Shinn added the gelding may not have run out a strong 2000m in Group 2 company. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr L Price undertook to report back on the condition of Man Of Choice and future race plans for the gelding.
  • Sovereign Nation – held up in the early part of the straight.
  • Balmain Boy – over the final 50m was obliged to race in restricted room to the inside of Manhattan Son, which was inclined to lay in under pressure over the concluding stages.
  • Predator – rider D Oliver explained his instructions had been to lead if possible, however, from his wide gate and when unable to do so, he elected to take a trailing position. He added his mount overraced slightly in the run and failed to finish the race of and, in his opinion, may have come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have aggravated speedy cuts behind.

In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account that there was contact between Almoonqith and Mongolian Khan just prior to the shift in from Our Ivanhowe. Rider O Bosson stated, in his opinion, his mount has not come up this preparation and, although checked on the first turn and obliged to cover ground throughout, was disappointing in its failure to run on.
