Summary of Races

RACE 1: Widden Kindergarten Stakes (Group 3) 1100m

  • Let's Dream Big – slow to begin.
  • Prince Chabal – slow to begin.
  • El Divino – on straightening shifted out and made slight contact with Astern.
  • Geneteau – laid out under pressure in the straight and proved difficult to ride.

RACE 2: Carbine Club Stakes (Group 3) 1600m

  • Hierarchal – as M Zahra was unable to fulfil his engagement due to transport difficulties, Stewards permitted D Oliver to be substituted as the rider of the colt.
  • Queen Of Wands - He's Our Rokkii jumped away very awkwardly, crowding Queen Of Wands out onto Data Point.
  • Tatoosh – rider B Avdulla stated the gelding had raced closer with blinkers on today, but did not appear to back up from its run at Rosehill on 26 March 2016, particularly over the shorter 1600m journey. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr P Perry stated Tatoosh finishes its races off better when able to be ridden quieter and, in his opinion, this was the principal reason for the disappointing performance. Mr Perry undertook to report back on the progress of Tatoosh subsequent to the race and the future race plans for the gelding.

RACE 3: Schweppes Chairman's Handicap (Group 2) 2600m

  • Supercoach – bounded in the air on jumping and missed the start as a result. Had to be steadied when Alegria (S Clipperton) shifted out to improve at the 600m. S Clipperton was told to exercise more care.
  • Destiny's Kiss – knuckled making the crossing at the 1600m.
  • Dee I Cee – when questioned regarding the performance, T Clark stated that, with five weeks between runs and on today's soft surface, the gelding did not run out the 2600m journey, particularly when, without cover, it was inclined to race keenly in the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr A Bott confirmed that the run of Dee I Cee was disappointing and advised the Stewards that they will reassess the immediate racing plans for the gelding. He undertook to report back to the Stewards concerning how Dee I Cee pulled up subsequent to the race.
  • Alegria – S Clipperton, rider of 2nd placegetter, was fined $800 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on six occasions prior to the 100m (one more than permitted by the rule).

When questioned, rider T Huet stated he was obliged to cover ground throughout but, moreover, he felt the mare had not backed up from its run at Muswellbrook on 27 March 2016. In addition, he felt Ashjata did not appear to handle today's soft going

The filly was inspected by the Club's Veterinary Officer and passed fit to start. • Secret Agenda – shortly after being badly hampered at the 1000m, overreacted when Regatta Rebel (C Brown) shifted in when not fully clear. C Brown was told to ensure he is fully clear when shifting ground. In assessing the incident, Stewards accepted the evidence of rider C Newitt that Secret Agenda was unbalanced from the earlier incident.
  • Dawnie Perfect – which was slow to begin, was checked shortly after the start when tightened for room between Don't Doubt Marley and Secret Agenda.

  • Good Standing – laid in under pressure in the straight.
  • Omei Sword – bumped with Sparkle on jumping. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. He undertook to report back if there is anything amiss with Omei Sword subsequent to the race.
  • Yankee Rose – Z Purton, rider of the winner, was fined $2,000 under AR137A(5)(a)(i) for having used the whip in consecutive strides prior to the 100m contrary to the rule.

  • Vanbrugh – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be mildly lame in the near foreleg. RACE 8: Darley T J Smith Stakes (Group 1) 1200m

  • Flamberge – when questioned, rider D Lane indicated, after knuckling over at the start, his mount got on the wrong let at the 900m and again on the home turn and for that reason, when it was well beaten, he eased it down in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mr M Ellerton indicated that Flamberge would be returning to Melbourne and undertook to report back if there is anything amiss with the gelding subsequent to the race.
  • Terravista – on straightening came into contact with English as it shifted out to improve around Rebel Dane.
  • Fast 'N' Rocking – at the 1000m had to be steadied when tightened for room between English and Terravista, which was taken out marginally by Exosphere.

  • Exosphere – rider J McDonald stated he was able to secure a nice position in the run, but was disappointing and he could offer not explanation for the performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer Mr J O'Shea stated there had been no issues whatsoever with Exosphere going into the race. He concurred with the view of the Club's Veterinary Officer that the colt was significantly lame in the off foreleg subsequent to the race and undertook to report to the Stewards the results of a full veterinary examinations to be conducted on Exosphere. Aomen – briefly tightened for room approaching the 300m when Winx, which had been held up, shifted back to the inside of Kermadec and Stratum Star.
  • Stratum Star – ran out passing the 300m, briefly hampering the tiring Kermadec
  • Kermadec – shifted out passing the 300m, taking Turn Me Loose out onto Ecuador, which had to be steadied away from the heels of Good Prospect (C Newitt), which shifted in. C Newitt was told to make more effort to keep his mounts straight. When questioned, rider Z Purton stated his mount began well today and was able to take up a forward position without being pushed. He added that when he asked his mount for an effort at the 450m it did not respond and its run was most disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to have blood present in its mouth and was displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr C Waller stated Kermadec would now be freshened up and he would consider restricting the horse's future program to sprint distances.
  • First Seal – rider T Berry stated his mount travelled well, but when asked to quicken could not do so in the soft going and, after receiving a bump from Winx at the 300m, weakened quickly from that point. Trainer Mr J Thompson undertook to report back to the Stewards the results of a full vet check.

RACE 10: TAB Adrian Knox Stakes (Group 3) 2000m

  • Zasorceress – as Z Purton was overweight, Stewards permitted T Berry to be substituted as the rider of the filly. Z Purton was fined $200 under AR120(b). Jumped awkwardly.
  • Karaka Lass – hampered at the start when Shotgun Roulette jumped awkwardly.
  • Peggy's Cove – got its head up when being restrained in the early stages.
  • Daisy's Joy – hampered and taken wider when Rainbow Park was taken out by Diamond Made, which shifted out when improving. Rider B Avdulla stated his mount was not comfortable in the soft track conditions and, in his opinion, may have come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Seltzer – held up until passing the 300m.
  • Diamond Made – when questioned concerning the improved performance of the filly, as compared to its last placing in a maiden event at Kembla Grange on 19 March 2016, trainer Mr B Cross stated that the filly's previous form had been most consistent. He confirmed, as reported in the Kembla Grange Stewards' report, his instructions on that occasion had been to be midfield, but the filly overraced badly, pulled its way into the lead and raced far too keenly, resulting in it being left without any finishing effort. Mr Cross on that occasion informed the Stewards that the manner in which the filly had raced was against its established pattern and he would today be endeavouring to have it race with cover.
