McEvoy moves on from Godolphin

Not getting the rides - Kerrin McEvoy was second-pick to James McDonald in recent weeks

Shock-waves were sent through the racing world this week as Kerrin McEvoy stepped down as Godolphin's stable jockey after 11 years as a contracted rider for H.H Sheikh Mohammed’s global operation. It was a decision that has played on his mind for the last couple of weeks as it became clear the top rides weren't going his way.

John O’Shea, the new boss after taking over from Peter Snowden, has always preferred to use the services of James McDonald if he is available.

McEvoy has been open about his feelings and not getting the level of support he had from Darley, under which he was number one in Australia. He sees it as no surprise given the changing nature of the jockey landscape, including the legendary Frankie Dettori stepping down as lead rider in the UK.

McEvoy insists there has been no bust up or hard feelings and hopes to ride for Godolphin operation in the future, which is proven by a book that includes the favourite in Race 1 today at Rosehill Gardens.

It is yet to be proven whether this is a short term gesture, and if McEvoy will slowly moved further away from the operation.

For now, the challenge for McEvoy is to go and find winners on his own. Known for his mental toughness, his ability to manage weight will be a key attribute and he has been below 50kg when needed.

With the Cups and Cox Plate coming up, expect the colours of Kerrin to be flying every bit as high as Godolphin.

McEvoy Darley highlights:

  • Sepoy's dominant two-year old year in Australia
  • 2nd in Epsom derby (three-year old classic race)
  • Winning the St Leger in the UK (three-year old classic race)

Better days - McEvoy after winning the Golden Slipper on Sepoy
