Vet Notes

  • In Her Time (Race 1) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly had suffered a second episode of cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer Mr B Smith was advised In Her Time will need to be subjected to a range of specialist tests, including cardiac troponin levels, an echocardiograph and the results of a stress test ECG. He was further advised that, subject to these tests being satisfactory, In Her Time will be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards. Mr Smith indicated the filly would now be spelled.
  • Mr Steal (Race 3) - late withdrawal when the Club's Veterinary Officer found behind the barrier the gelding to be lame in front. Trainer Mr B Baker indicated that both in its work on Thursday and light work on Friday Mr Steal had been free in its action. Mr Baker was advised a veterinary clearance would be required and the gelding would be examined on track prior to racing again.
  • Caribbean Concert (Race 4) – after arrival on course, trainer Mr D Williams reported a speck of blood inside the offside nostril of the mare. A veterinary examination of Caribbean Concert revealed there to be a small abrasion to the inside of the offside nostril and there was no evidence of any other injury. The mare was passed fit to start.

Penalties & Fines

  • App. J Innes, rider of He's Dreamin' – was fined $200 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on eight occasions prior to the 100m (three additional) and was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(i) for having used the whip on three successive occasions.
  • J McDonald, rider of Rhodin Drive – was fined $200 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on six occasions prior to the 100m (one additional).
  • J McDonald was fined $150 under AR120(b) after advising he could not make the weight to ride Jungle.  On  Wednesday, 20 April 2016 T Clark was substituted as the rider of the gelding. 
  • App. S Clenton, rider of Galaxy Warrior, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that she permitted her mount to shift in near the 1300m when not clear of Punton Bernardini, resulting in Punton Bernardini being checked and losing its rightful running. App. Clenton's permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 1 May 2016 and to expire on Saturday, 7 May 2016, on which day she may ride.
  • P Murray, Trainer of Darci Magic – was fined $100 under AR140A for presenting the gelding with blinkers, which were not part of its gear.
  • App. J Innes, rider of Himalaya Dream – was fined $200 under AR145 for weighing in 1 kilo overweight on the 5th placegetter. In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account App. Innes' prior good record.
  • J McDonald, rider of Mogador - was fined $300 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on seven occasions prior to the 100m (two additional).

Summary of Races

RACE 1: Hyland Race Colours Handicap 1200m

  • Wudang Mountain – jumped awkwardly, shifted out and bumped Sir Bacchus. Rider H Bowman reported his mount travelled well in the run, although he had to make some use of it in the early stages to cross Reincarnate making the first turn. He added, coming to the home turn, however, Wudang Mountain was immediately under pressure and he had some concerns with the colt's action. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable foreman Mr C Duckworth expressed disappointment with the performance and advised that the colt will now undergo a thorough veterinary examination, the results of which he will report to the Stewards, along with the future racing plans for Wudang Mountain.
  • In Her Time – jumped a patch on the track leaving the 800m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly had suffered a second episode of cardiac arrhythmia.   • Surfin' Safari – approaching the 1100m had to be steadied away from the heels of Reincarnate. Surfin' Safari then was inclined to overrace for some distance in the middle stages until obtaining cover on the back of Reincarnate near the 700m. Laid out under pressure in the straight.
  • Reincarnate – approaching the 1000m was obliged to race in restricted room between Dark Steel and Wudang Mountain (H Bowman), which directed Reincarnate in. H Bowman was spoken to and told to ensure he leaves sufficient racing room for runners to his inside.
  • Sir Bacchus – overraced in the middle stages and approaching the 600m had to be steadied away from the heels of So Willie.

RACE 2: Pluck @ Vinery Handicap 1100m

  • Aviator – overraced approaching the first turn.
  • Alliterate – overraced approaching the first turn.
  • Mooshakissa – rider T Angland reported that he was not happy with the filly's action in the straight and desisted from riding his mount out. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mr Paul Snowden undertook to present the results of a full veterinary check.

RACE 3: James Boag's Premium Handicap 2400m

  • Mr Steal - late withdrawal when the Club's Veterinary Officer found behind the barrier the gelding to be lame in front. Stewards subsequently ordered that all monies wagered on Mr Steal be refunded in full and with regard to betting with bookmakers all successful wagers made prior to 1.09pm to be subject to the following deductions in the dollar on the face value of the ticket: 1st) Murphy's Delight less 13ȼ win and 12ȼ place 2nd) Rhodin Drive 15ȼ place Trainer Mr B Baker indicated that both in its work on Thursday and light work on Friday Mr Steal had been free in its action. Mr Baker was advised a veterinary clearance would be required and the gelding would be examined on track prior to racing again.
  • He's Dreamin' – inclined to lay in at the entrance to the straight. App. J Innes Junior was fined $200 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on eight occasions prior to the 100m (three additional) and was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(i) for having used the whip on three successive occasions.
  • Doc Holliday – rider S Clipperton stated that the slow tempo did not suit the gelding, as it performs best when able to be held up, whereby it can finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr B Baker indicated Doc Holliday will be spelled.  
  • Lucky Liaison – trainer Ms K Buchanan undertook to report the results of a full vet check following the disappointing performance.
  • Rhodin Drive – rider J McDonald fined $200 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on six occasions prior to the 100m (one additional).

RACE 4: TAB Highway Handicap 1500m

  • Jungle – on Wednesday, 20 April 2016 T Clark was substituted as the rider of the gelding when J McDonald advised he could not make the weight. J McDonald was fined $150 under AR120(b).
  • Street Savvy – the gelding, which had some soreness across the rump following its last start at Narromine on 16 April 2016 was inspected by the Club's Veterinary Officer on arrival on course and passed fit to start.
  • Caribbean Concert – after arrival on course, trainer Mr D Williams reported a speck of blood inside the offside nostril of the mare. A veterinary examination of Caribbean Concert revealed there to be a small abrasion to the inside of the offside nostril and there was no evidence of any other injury. The mare was passed fit to start.
  • Balametalica – bumped with Galaxy Warrior on jumping away and then again came into contact when crowded between Svavarsson and Laredo Hussler, both of which shifted ground. Held up for clear running early in the straight.
  • Galaxy Warrior – bumped with Balametalica on jumping away.
  • Allzin – slow to begin. Approaching the 200m was crowded when Street Savvy shifted in after being brushed by Galaxy Warrior, which shifted in to obtain a run after being held up in the early part of the straight.
  • Oh So Unfair – the gelding, which was held up, received a bump near the 200m when Allzin shifted in.
  • Punton Bernardini – dipped linking up with the course proper at the 1400m. Making the first turn had to be steadied when Laredo Hussler shifted in and away from Miss Tickles. App. S Clenton, rider of Galaxy Warrior, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that she permitted her mount to shift in near the 1300m when not clear of Punton Bernardini, resulting in Punton Bernardini being checked and losing its rightful running. App. Clenton's permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 1 May 2016 and to expire on Saturday, 7 May 2016, on which day she may ride.

RACE 5: Schweppes Handicap 1500m

  • Falkenberg – slipped behind badly on jumping away and was inclined to overrace in the middle stages.
  • Top Of My List – the filly, which was held up in the early part of the straight, was then inclined to lay in under pressure.
  • Chandana – when questioned, H Bowman stated that he was not particularly disappointed with the run, as the filly is looking for more ground and was not suited by the race developing into a sprint home. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth concurred with the views of H Bowman that the filly was looking for more ground. He undertook to report if there was anything amiss with Chandana subsequent to the race.

RACE 6: TAB More Than Just Winning Handicap 1400m

  • Sweet Kiss – got its head up and jumped awkwardly.
  • Amazon – dipped shortly after the start.
  • Parraay – on straightening briefly tightened when Sweet Kiss laid in.
  • Sort After - on straightening briefly tightened when Sweet Kiss laid in.
  • Unequivocal – held up for clear running until passing the 200m.
  • Tremezzina – A post-race veterinary examination of the filly, which weakened after racing three wide without cover, did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 7: Bowermans Office Furniture Handicap 1500m

  • Supreme Warrior – slow to begin. Passing the 1200m Supreme Warrior, which was overracing, had to be checked when tightened for room due to Spy Decoder (J Collett) and His Majesty (B Avdulla) shifting in. Both J Collett and B Avdulla were reprimanded and advised that they should have extended more care to prevent the interference to another runner.
  • Candelara – the mare, which was slow to begin, was checked shortly afterwards when Darci Magic shifted in.
  • Darci Magic – the gelding, which was overracing, had to be steadied off the heels of Spy Decoder at the 800m. Trainer P Murray was fined $100 under AR140A for presenting the gelding with blinkers, which were not part of its gear.
  • His Majesty – rider B Avdulla stated that his mount jumped particularly well today and, without having to be ridden along, took up a more forward position.
  • Himalaya Dream – App. J Innes Junior was fined $200 under AR145 for weighing in 1 kilo overweight on the 5th placegetter. In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account App. Innes' prior good record.

RACE 8: McGrath Estate Agents Handicap 1350m

  • Signposted – the gelding, which was fractious in the barrier, was unloaded and passed fit to start by the Club's Veterinary Officer.
  • Bring Luck – slow to begin.
  • Zedfast – held up in the early part of the straight.

RACE 9: tab.com.au Handicap 1100m

Freeze The Charges – blundered on jumping away.

Eminent Duke – an inquiry was conducted into Eminent Duke being severely checked at the 600m. It was established that Grunderzeit (App. S Clenton), which was racing fiercely and laying in, shifted in slightly and made contact with the shoulder of Eminent Duke. That contact had the effect of turning Grunderzeit in further across the running of Eminent Duke, which had to be severely checked. Whilst the Stewards advised App. Clenton that the racing manners of Grunderzeit had been the principal cause of the interference, she was nevertheless reprimanded and advised that in similar circumstances the Stewards would expect that she would make more effort to prevent her mount shifting in. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

Alart – hampered approaching the 600m.

Fiftyshadesofgrey – hampered approaching the 600m.

Grunderzeit – held up in the early part of the straight and then wanted to lay in and proved difficult to ride over the latter stages.

Our Renaissance – passing the 200m Palazzo Pubblico, which had been held up for a run, shifted in to take a run to the inside of Freeze The Charges and, in so doing, inconvenienced Our Renaissance.

Tahitian Black – rider T Angland stated he was not happy with his mount's action and, consequently, did not ride the gelding out in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr D Pfieffer undertook to report back on the immediate racing future of the gelding after consultation with the owners. Mr Pfieffer was advised that Tahitian Black would be required to trial if it continued to race on.

Mogador - rider J McDonald was fined $300 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on seven occasions prior to the 100m (two additional).
