Summary of Races

RACE 1: tab.com.au Handicap 1100m

  • Legerity – knuckled over badly on jumping away, resulting in its rider, B Avdulla, becoming unbalanced.
  • Hammoon Dream – overraced in the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Baltic Whisper – briefly tightened by Aviator, which shifted in near the 1000m. Rider T Angland lost his whip near the 200m.
  • Archives – leaving the 800m made contact with the running rail and became unbalanced when racing tight to the inside of Baltic Whisper. Inclined to lay out under pressure in the straight.
  • Aviator – when questioned regarding the colt racing further forward, rider M Rodd explained he was under no specific instructions. He added that his mount began well, and with moderate tempo early, he allowed Aviator to stride forward and race outside the leader. He further stated Aviator, which was racing with blinkers for the first time today, then overraced. Rider M Rodd was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on six occasions prior to the 100m (one additional).
  • Lavender Hill – App. J Innes Jnr stated his instructions were to lead on the filly but, after being slow to begin and then when crowded between Archives and Legerity, both of which shifted ground, his mount settled towards the rear. He added that his mount did not appreciate racing in amongst horses, did not travel comfortably throughout the event and, when placed under pressure, was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. App. Innes further stated that, in his view, Lavender Hill would be better suited when being able to race in a more forward position. A post-race veterinary examination revealed filly to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Stable representative Mr A Bott confirmed the instructions were to be forward and agreed with App. J Innes Junior that the filly was unsuited by racing back in the field. Mr Bott undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of Lavender Hill subsequent to the race.

RACE 2: TAB Rewards Handicap 1200m

  • Sonic Swish – slow to begin. Overraced in the early and middle stages. Steadied when disappointed for a run outside Painte shortly after straightening. In the incident Sonic Swish and Grunderzeit made contact.
  • Well Hardly Ever – when questioned regarding the gelding being ridden back in the field, rider T Angland stated his instructions were to ride the gelding similar to when it was successful at Warwick Farm on 6 April 2016 and endeavour to take up a midfield position. He added, from his wide barrier, after commencing fairly, he was left with no option, other than to restrain his mount or take up a position towards the rear of the field, rather than cover additional ground and, as a consequence, settled further back than intended. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be mildly lame in the off foreleg. Stable representative Mr D Harris confirmed the instructions issued and advised there were no issues with Well Hardly Ever leading up to today's event. Mr Harris was asked to provide a veterinary clearance prior to the gelding racing again.
  • Grunderzeit – when questioned regarding his riding of the gelding, rider S Clipperton stated that, prior to receiving his instructions, he was of the view that, given the perceived average early tempo, he would be able to take up a more forward position today. He added that subsequently he received instructions to ride the gelding in a position handy to the speed and settle fifth or sixth. He added, after jumping awkwardly, he elected then not to ride Grunderzeit forward to comply with his instructions and, as a consequence, was caught four wide to the outside of Disgraceful. S Clipperton further stated that he then endeavoured to attempt to restrain his mount to take up a trailing position behind Disgraceful, but when that runner was also restrained by rider B Avdulla, he was caught four deep without cover. When questioned as to whether there was an opportunity to then ride forward and take up a position behind the eventually winner, Painte, S Clipperton stated that as he would have had to make too much use of his mount to go forward and for this reason he remained racing outside other runners. S Clipperton agreed with the Stewards that he had erred in the early stages in not riding positively from the barrier to take up a more forward position, which would have allowed him to race closer to the eventual winner, Painte, and not cover additional ground. Trainer Mr J O'Shea confirmed that the instructions had been to take up a handy position and Mr O'Shea agreed with the Stewards that S Clipperton had erred in not riding positively from the barrier. When questioned regarding the betting drift, Mr O'Shea advised Stewards that Grunderzeit had pleased him since its first up run at Rosehill on 23 April 2016 and that he was expecting Grunderzeit to race well. He added that, considering the additional ground covered by the gelding today, he was of the view the run was full of merit.
  • Turbulent Jet – trainer Mr L Curtis advised that the gelding bled from both nostrils on returning to the stables. As this was the second occasion, the gelding would now be barred from racing under AR53A. Mr Curtis advised that Turbulent Jet would now be retired.

RACE 3: TAB Highway Handicap 1200m

  • Supreme Lad – slow to begin.
  • Didyahearme – slow to begin. Approaching the 800m was steadied to avoid the heels of King's Officer when reluctant to hold its position to the inside of that runner.
  • Correspondent – on jumping was hampered when crowded between Pure Choice and Alone With You, which was taken in by Dylan's Dynasty. Leaving the 1000m was inclined to overrace and was inconvenienced when having to be steadied to avoid the heels of Dylan's Dynasty, which shifted in, and Circle Game, which shifted out. Near the 200m was steadied to avoid the heels of Circle Game (B Avdulla), which shifted out when not quite clear. B Avdulla was advised to exercise more care. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. When questioned regarding his riding in the early part of the straight and, in particular, as to whether there was an opportunity to improve between Circle Game and De La Hoya, App. J Innes Jnr stated that on straightening, whilst he observed a run had commenced to develop between those two runners, he was reluctant to ride his mount forward, as he was of the view that Circle Game would shift out, which would result in his mount being placed in an awkward position. He added for this reason he did not ride his mount forward and, once Circle Game then shifted out approaching the 200m, he elected to shift to the inside of that runner, where he placed his mount under pressure. He further added he was then obliged to shift further in near the 100m to the inside of Pure Choice to find clear running, whereby his mount finished the race off well. After considering App. Innes's explanation in the presence of his master, trainer Mr G Ryan, the Stewards found that App. Innes had erred in not placing his mount under pressure in the early part of the straight where there was sufficient room for him to improve between Circle Game and De La Hoya and he was advised in similar circumstances he would be expected to ride in a more competitive manner to give his mounts the opportunity to win or obtain the best possible position in the field. Acting under the provisions of AR92A, the Stewards referred App. Innes back to the Riding Skills Panel for remedial training.
  • Lipread – shifted in at the start and made heavy contact with Dylan's Dynasty, which in turn made heavy contact with Alone With You, which then shifted in and bumped Correspondent on the hindquarter. When questioned regarding being more forward today, rider H Poland stated she was instructed not to go forward, but when the mare commenced well and she was able to take advantage of her good get away, she elected to take up a more forward position.
  • Circle Game – H Poland, rider of Lipread, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 1000m she permitted her mount to shift in when not clear of Pure Choice, which was crowded across the running of Circle Game, which was checked and lost its rightful running. H Poland's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 15 May 2016 and to expire on Sunday, 22 May 2016, on which day she may ride. • Seltzer – when the tempo slackened near the 1400m commenced to overrace and was checked to avoid the heels of Romantic Maid.
  • Chandana – over the concluding stages brushed with Romantic Maid when both runners shifted ground.
  • Power Of Patch – rider C Reith advised that, after obtaining the lead making the first turn, he was able to control the tempo at only a moderate pace, but the gelding was most disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. He added, in his view, Power Of Patch may have come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr M Moroney advised that Power Of Patch had pleased leading into today's race, however, in light of the performance the gelding would now be spelled.
  • Romantic Maid – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

  • Multizone – A Cavallo (Surfin' Safari) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 1000m he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of Multizone, resulting in that runner losing its running and being checked. • Sir Bacchus – laid in under pressure in the straight.
  • Surfin' Safari – when questioned regarding the colt being ridden in a more forward position, rider A Cavallo stated, from his wide draw, he was instructed to ride his mount forward and take up a position behind the leaders if possible. Trainer's representative Mr S Perry confirmed the instructions and advised the instructions had been similar to those issued to App. T Marshall when the colt resumed at Rosehill on 23 April 2016 and on that occasion Surfin' Safari had settled much further back than they had anticipated. Nevertheless Mr Perry was reminded of his obligations under the provisions of AR135A that he must inform the Stewards of any change in the manner in which a horse is to be ridden.

App. Adkins' permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence at the expiration of a suspension incurred at Newcastle on 30 April 2016, namely Saturday, 14 May 2016 and to expire on Sunday, 22 May 2016, on which day he may ride.
