Horse of the Week: Eagle Way

Published: 15 Jun 2016

Storming home to win - Eagle Way signed off from his Aussie career with a big Group One victory

Raiders from Melbourne, Sydney and New Zealand continued to dominate the racing at Eagle Farm on Saturday, but the Queensland Derby was taken out by a local star. Bryan Guy prepared three-year-old EAGLE WAY perfectly for his target race and Tommy Berry delivered the big-striding son of More Than Ready at the right time to swoop home and win.

Waller's RODRICO couldn't keep up with him and Darren Weir's favourite HOWARD BE THY NAME only managed fourth, a performance worthy of Horse of the Week.

  • Purchased from the Segenhoe Stud Australia Pty Ltd, Scone at the 2014 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $200,000
  • His dam Wedgetail Eagle is a prolific breeder and now has four stakes winners
  • He's now off to Hong Kong to be trained by his owner John Moore
  • John Moore, son of George Moore, has been involved in Hong Kong racing for 35 years and has recorded more wins than any other trainer
  • John was left with the horse when an owner couldn't get a permit to race the horse in Hong Kong, he then kept the horse in Australia because trainer Bryan Guy told him "that I shouldn't sell this horse back to Hong Kong because it would win the Queensland Derby." He was right!
