Summary of Races

RACE 1: Happy 70th Birthday Martin King Handicap 1200m

  • Hair Trigger – bumped at the start by Decorated Soldier, which shifted out after being bumped by Walk Right In.
  • Thronum – jumped awkwardly, shifted out, made contact with Seventhchic and lost additional ground. When questioned regarding his riding of the colt, T Berry stated that his instructions had been to endeavour to find cover preferably behind the leader. He added Thronum jumped awkwardly and then made contact with Seventhchic, resulting in his mount losing ground at the start. He further stated he was then able to ride his mount along to take up a forward position in the early stages. When questioned whether there was an opportunity to maintain his position on the back of Tango Rain in the middle stages, T Berry stated that he had walked the track prior to the running of the first event and had formed the view that the inside running was inferior and for this reason it was his intention to remain racing one off. He added that he had anticipated Tickling, which had improved to his outside, to take up a position outside the leader Tango Rain, but when Tickling did not continue to go forward as expected he was obliged to come back, as Tickling then took up a trailing position on the back of Tango Rain. After considering all the evidence, the Stewards advised T Berry that in their view he had erred in not maintaining a position directly behind Tango Rain.
  • Cudabeen – overraced in the early and middle stages and, after being crossed near the 100m by Tickling, commenced to race fiercely and was checked from the heels of that runner. Again near the 800m Cudabeen, which continued to race fiercely, had to be checked from the heels of Tickling.
  • Tickling – steadied near the 600m when briefly tightened for room by Seventhchic, which shifted in slightly.
  • Decorated Soldier – making the home turn was hampered and taken wider when Vienna Waltz hung out. Inclined to lay out under pressure in the straight and inside the 200m was brushed by Hair Trigger. Over the concluding stages had to be steadied when crowded for room between Hair Trigger and Thronum (T Berry) which, after being initially taken out by Tango Rain, shifted out abruptly away from that runner. Stewards were satisfied that in the circumstances T Berry had reacted to endeavour to stop his mount from shifting ground.
  • Seventhchic – rider B Avdulla stated in his view his mount did not handle today's heavy track conditions. He added, although Seventhchic had been successful at its last start on 6 July 2016, he felt today's surface was slightly inferior and in addition the filly may have come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr C Waller stated in his opinion Seventhchic may have come to the end of its preparation and would now be spelled.

RACE 2: TAB Highway Handicap 1250m

  • Rubymay – shortly after the start was steadied to avoid the heels of Dylan's Dynasty, which shifted in. Near the 100m had to be steadied when disappointed for a run between Attainment and Ocean Grand. Rubymay was then directed back to the inside of Attainment to obtain clear running.
  • Ocean Grand – raced keenly in the early stages.
  • Loyal Toast – leaving the 600m when the pace steadied had to be checked to avoid the heels of Lasszou.
  • Raised A Legend – rider K McEvoy could offer no explanation for the performance, although his mount did travel comfortably on the heavy track conditions in the early stages, but was most disappointing in its failure to respond to his riding in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed an abrasion to the near-side hock and a laceration to the lip. Trainer Mr M Milton expressed disappoint with the performance of the gelding and advised it is now his intention to have Raised A Legend undergo a thorough veterinary examination, including a full blood count, the results of which he will forward to the Stewards, at which time he will give consideration to the gelding's immediate racing future.
  • Cheeky – rider D Pitomac stated he was able to obtain the lead on the gelding in the early stages, however after his mount blundered in the going leaving the 600m it failed to travel from that point and consequently weakened in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr C Maxwell advised that in his view Cheeky did not handle the heavy track conditions, however in light of today's performance would now be spelled.

RACE 3: Schweppes Handicap 1250m

  • Salerno – as R Hutchings failed to arrive on course by the prescribed time, C Reith was substituted as the rider of the gelding. R Hutchings was fined $100 (AR91).
  • Art Nouveau - on jumping became unbalanced when bumped by Pioneering, which shifted out.
  • Ocean Tempest – inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight.
  • Dee Nine Elle – when questioned regarding his riding of the filly, T Clark stated he had been instructed to take up a forward position, and with a lack of perceived tempo in the event he had anticipated leading. He added as the start was effected Dee Nine Elle became unsettled and as a consequence was slow to begin. He said that he endeavoured to ride his mount along early to take up a more forward position, but when Salerno and Helensburgh Ham, which were positioned to his outside, took up a more forward position in advance of him he was obliged to race in a position behind the leaders with cover.

RACE 4: tab.com.au Handicap 1900m

  • Get On The Grange –despite being ridden along in the early stages, failed to muster speed and consequently settled back in the field. Near the 200m was struck over the head by the whip of H Bowman (Loophole).
  • Springbok Flyer – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 5: #Theraces Handicap 1550m

  • Thunder Down Under – a veterinary examination of the colt after arriving on course found a laceration to the near-hind heel. Thunder Down Under was passed suitable to start.
  • Can Dominate – jumped awkwardly.
  • Lanciato – over the final 200m could not be tested when held up between Got Unders and Magical Stance.
  • Gambler's Blues – bled for the first time. Trainer Mr T Martin was advised the gelding would incur the mandatory three month ban from racing (AR53A).

RACE 6: TAB Rewards Handicap 1100m

  • Bayview Emperor – shortly after the start was tightened for room by Isorich, which shifted out.
  • Raido – when questioned regarding the gelding being ridden in the lead, K McEvoy stated his instructions had been to endeavour to find a position off the pace with cover. He added when his mount jumped well and runners to his inside, particularly Isorich, did not go forward as he had anticipated he allowed Raido to continue to stride forward and ultimately lead.

RACE 7: July Sprint 1100m

  • Gold Symphony – tightened for room on jumping between Shamalia and Wouldnt It Be Nice, which shifted in. Leaving the 1000m was crowded for room when Shamalia (G Schofield) got onto the heels of Hurrara and had to be checked to avoid the heels of that runner. Stewards accepted that G Schofield had endeavoured to relieve the tightening to Gold Symphony and therefore no action was taken.
  • Shamalia – a post-race veterinary examination of the mare, which raced disappointingly, did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 8: TAB More Than Just Winning Handicap 1250m

  • Dylan's Rojo – rider B Avdulla stated that after striking a softer section of the track near the 600m his mount became under pressure and weakened out of the race from that point. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Avonaco – rider H Bowman stated that his mount travelled well in the early and middle stages and near the 500m when travelling keenly he shifted to a one off position to be racing on the back of Dylan's Rojo. He added that soon after when Dylan's Rojo commenced to give ground and Ultima Chance had improved around his outside he elected to come back to the inside of Typhoon Jolie to find clear running. He said, after being ridden along making the home turn, his mount initially responded, but over the final 200m was somewhat disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer's representative Mr C Duckworth concurred with the views of rider H Bowman and undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of the gelding subsequent to the race.

RACE 9: Myboycharlie @ Vinery Handicap 1100m

  • Rose Of Man – slow to begin.
  • Lot Three Four One – began awkwardly, shifted out and lost ground.
  • Shahrazad – raced keenly in the early and middle stages and proved reluctant to settle.
  • Awasita – near the 600m was steadied to avoid the heels of Shahrazad (G Schofield), which shifted in when not quite clear. G Schofield was advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground. When questioned regarding his riding in the middle stages and as to whether there was an opportunity to hold a position on the back of Thorsborne, which would have resulted in the favourite Shahrazad remaining racing three deep without cover, B Avdulla stated his instructions were, as the mare was out of form, to endeavour to have Awasita ridden quieter today to see if it was able to finish the race off. He added, as a consequence of obtaining a position outside of Mad About You, he elected then to come back and take up a position behind that runner rather than contesting a position behind the lead, which Shahrazad ultimately was able to obtain.
