Summary of Races

RACE 1: Hyland Race Colours Handicap 1500m

  • Dynastic Lady – slow to begin.
  • Salsonic – slow to begin. When Magicalease shifted in at the start and made heavy contact with Harper's Choice, Harper's Choice became unbalanced and shifted in, resulting in Fanfaron being taken in onto Salsonic, which was steadied after being slow to begin. In the incident Fencourt was bumped on the hindquarter.
  • Magicalease - shifted in at the start and made heavy contact with Harper's Choice. Magicalease, which was inclined to lay in away from Golden Organic, raced greenly and made contact on a number of occasions with Enterprise Mount passing the 1300m. Magicalease continued to race ungenerously and got its head up for some distance thereafter. On the first turn, while continuing to race ungenerously, shifted out away from the heels of Golden Organic and hampered Sugar Bella and High Mist. Laid in under pressure in the straight.
  • Fencourt – slow to begin. Bumped on the hindquarter at the start. Approaching the 100m was hampered when bumped by Magicalease, which shifted in.
  • Black On Gold – slow to begin. Then raced ungenerously for some distance approaching the first turn and was restrained off heels. Making the home turn was held up on the heels of Fencourt. Black On Gold was then disappointed for clear running between Fencourt and Fanfaron near the 300m and as a consequence had to be checked to avoid the heels of Fencourt. Black On Gold then continued to race greenly, was inclined to lay in and again over the concluding stages could not be tested when unable to improve between Sugar Bella and Fanfaron.
  • Shazee Lee – overraced in the middle stages. Held up for clear running in the early part of the straight.

  • Magical Stance – making the home turn was placed in restricted room between Springbok Flyer, which was commencing to give ground, and Red Dubawi (T Clark), which shifted out to improve around the heels of Lie Direct. T Clark was advised to exercise more care.
  • Lie Direct – making the home turn had to be steadied when disappointed for a run between Loud Debate and Rock Mylady. Raced greenly in the straight and was inclined to shift its ground.
  • Zayam – when questioned regarding his riding of the gelding, H Bowman stated that Zayam is a one-paced front runner and for this reason when the tempo steadied in the middle stages he commenced to ride forward leaving the 1000m to give his mount the best opportunity of finishing the race off. He added when he shifted off to improve Springbok Flyer, which was positioned in advance and to his inside, shifted off, which resulted in Zayam being obliged to race four wide throughout the middle stages without cover. H Bowman said, although he had to cover ground, Zayam was still disappointing in that it was a beaten horse on the home turn and finished tailed out. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr M Smith could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance. Stewards ruled that Zayam must barrier trial to their satisfaction prior to racing again.

  • About Time – when questioned regarding the gelding leading today, rider A Cavallo stated his instructions were to have his mount in a forward position, but after commencing well from his wide barrier he elected to ride forward and take up the lead so as to avoid being caught wide. He said he attributed today's improved performance to the fact that Magnajoy was able to obtain a position outside the lead in what was only a moderately run race and consequently ran on strongly.
