Summary of Races

RACE 1: POWHF Louise Hope Handicap 1800m

  • Defrost My Heart – slow to begin.
  • Erika – rider T Berry stated that, although the mare has some wet track form, he felt it was not comfortable in today's Heavy (10) track conditions and attributed this to its disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 2: POWHF Roy Billing Oam Handicap 2400m

  • Storm System – blundered near the 300m.
  • Thurston – rider T Clark reported the gelding failed to handle the heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities, other than the gelding had abraded its hear-hind bumper.
  • Major Major – rider J Collett stated the only explanation he could offer for today's disappointing performance was that the gelding had not backed up from its last start at Warwick Farm on Wednesday, 3 August 2016. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr G Hickman stated Major Major had pulled up well subsequent to its Warwick Farm start and in his view the only excuse he could offer was that, whilst the gelding has some exposed wet track form, it was not on tracks as heavy as today. Mr Hickman undertook to report back on the progress of Major Major subsequent to the race.

RACE 3: Jockey Celebration Day Handicap 1000m

  • Don't Tease Me – began awkwardly.
  • Three Sheets – when questioned, rider R Thompson stated that making the home turn his mount lost ground on the winner Invitations when that runner shifted out to improve due to the fact that his mount was not handling the very heavy track conditions. He added that once the gelding balanced up in the straight it closed off reasonably well.
  • Texan Lad – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer Mr J Berry was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Texan Lad racing again. Rider C Reith was spoken to in respect to returning to scale in excess of 1 kilogram overweight (AR145). Having regard to the unfavourable weather conditions no action was taken against C Reith when it was established his overweight was due to the heavy rain.

  • Thronum – raced greenly inside the 100m and was inclined to shift ground.
  • Mediterranean – rider B Shinn stated that on straightening he placed his mount under pressure in an endeavour to improve and after briefly being awkwardly placed close to the heels of Thronum, his mount then did not respond to his riding in the early part of the straight as he had hoped. He added, after continuing to ride his mount along in the straight, it was not until the 100m after he found comfortable galloping room that the colt began to respond to his riding and finished the race off strongly. B Shinn said the only explanation he could offer for the colt's failure to initially respond when asked for an effort early in the straight in his opinion it was not entirely comfortable in the heavy conditions.

Acting on this assurance no action was taken.
  • Bayview Emperor – when questioned regarding his riding in the straight, R Thompson stated that leaving the 500m the gelding blundered in the going and soon after he commenced to ride his mount along. He added, after placing his mount under full pressure in the early part of the straight, he was then reluctant to continue to ride vigorously for some distance after the 300m in an endeavour to improve between Specific Choice and Ice Bucket as he was concerned that Ice Bucket would shift out into his running. R Thompson further stated that as his vision at this time was somewhat impaired due to kickback, he was cautious when continuing to proceed between those two runners. He added that about the 200m when he was clearly of the view was sufficient to proceed into, rode Bayview Emperor along and the gelding finished off strongly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a healing wound to the off-fore canon.
