Summary of Races

RACE 1: #Theraces Handicap 2000m

  • Crown Moss – began awkwardly and shifted out, resulting in Birds Of Tokyo being hampered and taken out onto Malleable, which was also hampered.
  • Northern Journey – slow to begin. Approaching the 1800m was steadied to avoid the heels of Mandalong Kiss (A Banks), which shifted in when not quite clear. A Banks was reprimanded and advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground. When questioned App. D Panya explained that her instructions had been to be prominent and to commence her run from the 700m. She added she was able to lead on her mount in the early stages and when pressured by Erika in the middle stages she relinquished that position to that runner near the 1200m. App. Panya further stated that near the 900m she shifted out and improved in accordance with her instructions. The Stewards advised App. Panya that given the above average tempo of the race she had erred by shifting out and improving to the outside of Erika near the 900m, which generated an increased tempo in the event which in the opinion of the Stewards was detrimental to the gelding's chances. App. Panya was told that she would be expected to show greater judgement than she had on this occasion and be mindful of the tempo in races.
  • Firebird Flyer – knuckled over on jumping. Overraced throughout the early and middle stages. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Firebird Flyer, App. J Innes Jr stated his instructions were to take up a midfield position, but he was specifically told not to go to the fence. He added as a consequence in the early stages he remained racing to the outside of Malleable and when that runner stayed one off he was obliged to race three wide without cover in the early stages, which resulted in Firebird Flyer overracing. He added throughout the early part of the back straight when Malleable stayed one off his mount continued to overrace until near the 1200m where he was able to obtain cover on the back of My Giuliano. App. Innes Jr further added that Firebird Flyer travelled comfortably from this point, however when the tempo increased from the 800m his mount failed to quicken despite his efforts and was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a small wound to the near-fore fetlock. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth stated that Firebird Flyer was disadvantaged by racing further back in the field than had been anticipated and at its next start the intention is to use the services of a senior rider. Mr Duckworth undertook to report back on the condition of the mare subsequent to the race.
  • Birds Of Tokyo – overraced in the early stages and when being restrained shifted out and was steadied away from the heels of Northern Journey near the 1700m. A Banks, rider of Mandalong Kiss, pleaded guilty of a charge of careless riding in that leaving the 1800m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Birds Of Tokyo, resulting in Birds Of Tokyo losing its rightful running. A Banks' licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Tuesday, 30 August 2016 and to expire on Friday, 9 September 2016, on which day he may ride. When questioned regarding her riding of Birds Of Tokyo, App. J Payne stated the connections had anticipated a more genuine tempo as compared to its last start at Randwick on 6 August 2016 and for this reason she was instructed to take up a position behind the leaders. She added, after commencing reasonably well and receiving interference soon after the start, she elected to take up a position to the outside of the early leader, Northern Journey, however when Erika pressed forward she was able to take up a position in accordance with her instructions. App. Payne further added that when she steadied Birds Of Tokyo near the 1500m it reacted quicker and lost more ground than she had anticipated. App. J Payne was fined $500 for using the whip on eight occasions (three additional) prior to the 100m (AR137A(5)(a)(ii)).
  • Erika – blundered near the 1600m. When questioned regarding the mare leading today, T Berry stated the intention was to ride the filly with cover, but after making the first turn when My Guiliano, which was positioned in advance of him, was checked by its rider, he then was obliged to shift out and consequently elected to press forward and take up the lead. Near the 200m rider T Berry dropped his off-side rein for a short distance before regathering.
  • My Giuliano – making the first turn near the 1500m when inclined to overrace had to be checked to avoid the heels of Crown Moss, which in turn had to be steadied away from Birds Of Tokyo (App. J Payne), which slackened the tempo after obtaining a position outside Northern Journey. App. Payne was reprimanded for excessively slowing the speed (AR137(d)).

  • Cocoexcel – hampered on jumping when Evacuation, which began awkwardly, shifted in. Rider H Bowman stated that the filly, which was stepping up in grade today, may not have run out a strong 1400m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth stated that Cocoexcel had pleased the stable since winning at Warwick Farm on 3 August 2016 and he agreed with the assessment of H Bowman that the filly did not run out the 1400m journey. Mr Duckworth advised the stable now intends to drop the filly back in distance at its next start. He undertook to report back on the progress of the filly.

RACE 8: Premier's Cup (Listed) 1900m

  • Magic Hurricane – slow to begin.
  • Ruling Dynasty – slow to begin. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, G Schofield stated that his mount travelled comfortably in the early stages, however when he shifted out to improve from the 800m and attempted to follow the winner, Sense Of Occasion, Ruling Dynasty did not respond to his riding from that point and was most disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr J Cummings stated that Ruling Dynasty had pleased the stable in the lead up to today's race and was at a loss to explain its disappointing run. The Stewards ruled that Ruling Dynasty must trial prior to its next race start.

Ms Englebrecht undertook to report back on the condition of the gelding subsequent to the race and the future race plans.
  • Conarchie – began awkwardly and shifted out, resulting in Ever So Natural and Labdien being hampered.
  • Labdien – for a short distance approaching the 1000m raced keenly. Rider H Bowman stated he followed Cannyescent into the straight and, after improving to its outside, Labdien worked to the line well and in his view was looking for further distance. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Ever So Natural – rider J Parr stated the only excuse he could offer for today's performance was that the gelding had raced like a tired horse. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying thumps and a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr C Bashford was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Ever So Natural racing again. Mr Bashford indicated the gelding will now be spelled.
