A small field takes on the mile and a half in what looks to be a tactical battle. Four mares line up, the most progressive of which is the Godolphin stayer Terai. She has shown the ability to sustain a long run to the line and after finishing hard in a Group 2 race last start is very hard to beat here. The likely Slow Tempo might be the only risk and Sam Clipperton will need to 'get on his bike' early from the 600m mark. Another mare, the Chris Waller trained Saigon Tea, also brings Melbourne carnival form. She has similar features to Terai, being not the most dynamic but able to maintain a strong surge to the line. Her stable-mate Reigning is just that little bit too dour on a dry track to win and his place chances look more likely. The best of the rest are Majestic Beast (likely leader) and Lucky Lucky Lucky (can improve after freshen-up), who both bring good midweek form. It's a game of chess and a well-judged mid-race move might pay dividends.
