The Winning Moves at Rosehill

Published: 09 Feb 2015

Just gets there - You needed a bit of luck to collect on Tales of Grimm on Saturday

How did you go on the weekend? A few winners, some hard luck stories or a few lessons learnt?

In a sport that has more hard luck tales than most, working out if you made the wrong move can be a tricky science.

The Race Guide takes a look at the Winning Moves for Rosehill Gardens. Did you need more info, or a bit of luck, to find that winning bet?

Race 1

Race Rating - Very Winnable

Marple Miss came into this race with the best credentials after two recent wins and was weighted nicely given the 3kg claim for Samantha Clenton. Trainer Kris Lees could have gone up in grade with his improving filly, but the decision to pick up another Benchmark race was too tempting, adding almost $50,000 to her winnings.

Winning Move - Betting on an in-form mare that was placed to perfection

Race 2

Race Rating - Very Winnable

There is an old adage in racing, stick with trainers in form... None fit that bill more than young Sam Kavanough at present. Punters who took the shorts on Centre Pivot were relying on him to relish the step up in class and distance. And that he did, winning with ease.

Winning Move - Betting on trainers in form will fill the pockets

Race 3

Race Rating - Winnable

The quick backup again proved to be a good recipe for Joe Pride and Adorabeel as she box seated and went one better than last week. The well-backed favourite Pajaro is a tough type, but not a dominant sprinter with the turn-of-foot needed to guarantee a win.

Winning Move - Betting against the favourite at "unders" and taking the in-form mare on the back-up

Race 4

Race Rating - Bit of Luck Needed

Two-year-old races often throw a Strong Tempo and that is what punters had to watch in the Inglis Classic. Lady Jivago is a tough filly that showed resilience and fight in her one race win to date. She enjoyed a nice drop on hot tempo. If you backed the favourites in this, it just wasn't your day.

Winning Move - Betting on a filly that showed form and toughness, and the chance of a Strong Tempo

Race 5

Racing Rating - Winnable

There were two classy six furlong horses in this race and one of them, Delectation, had shown himself to be less than genuine in races before. Backing the more professional Scissor Kick turned out to be the right bet after he paraded in good fashion first-up.

Winning Move - Sticking to a classy professional that was ready first-up

Race 6

Race Rating - Very Winnable

Catkins is a Group One mare who under set weights and penalties conditions was very well placed. Her fight and courage was on display for all to see as she pounced late under a confident Bowman ride. Lilliburlero was brave, she has come back as good as ever.

Winning Move - Simply backing the best under favourable conditions

Race 7

Race Rating - Bit of Luck Needed

It was that man again, Sam Kavanagh, as import Tales of Grimm asserted his class and beat the sprinters at his first up Aussie assignment. Although not a sprinting type, he raced away with this in style after good trials in the lead up.

Winning Move - Ignoring the fact he didn't look like a sprinter and following an import with a touch of class

Race 8

Race Rating - Winnable

It was in the yard where you had to split three in form horses Burbero, Mighty Lucky and Diametric. It was the favourite Diametric that was unsettled, parading nervously while the other two were turned out a treat. Add in a little bit of Bjorn Baker magic and the recipe for a win was with Burbero.

Winning Move - The mounting yard will often show you when to not jump into the 'fav'
