Yard to the Post @ Rosehill Gardens

Race Day: Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, 21 May 2016

Drama in the last at Rosehill Gardens, only a small on-track crowd able to watch the last race live after a reported satellite link failure caused all Sky radio and television coverage to be lost. There was no news from the track until about five minutes after the race was due to finish. Everyone paused to wait for the result in what felt like a throw-back to times gone past.

Perhaps the best performance on a quiet day came from the young Bryce Hey three-year-old SPIETH, a strapping son of Thorn Park that showed rapid acceleration to dash clear of the Arrowfield colt KING'S TROOP in the straight. He was stepping back to 1,100 metres today and could be a Group-level 1,200 sprinter in the future.

It almost seems normal that Waller walked away with three winners, DANCE OF HEROES just beating stable-mate and short-price favourite HIPPARCHUS early in the day, before TSARITSA and MARENOSTRO won too. TSARITSA came from a tricky position off a steady tempo and looks like another one to follow.

Tye Angland rode both MARENOSTRO and new Tim Martin recruit PINDAN PEARL beautifully to win at good odds. And it was the final day for Rory Hutchings as an apprentice, officially out-riding his claim and entering the senior jockey ranks.

Overall the track was quite fair, some better ground out wide evening out what could have been a day of on-pace bias. Getting off the rails late in the day was the place to be.

A full review from the yard to the post will be on-line Sunday at 9am.

Race 1 LES CARLYON AC PLATE

This Sepoy filly can gallop

fair tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Chipanda John O'Shea Brenton Avdulla 9 54.0
2 Legerity Clare Cunningham Christian Reith 2 57.5
3 Argie Bargie Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou Mr Lester Grace 8 54.0

In The Yard

2yos all well behaved, OMIYA impressed in the yard. LEGERITY looked neat and very fit, CHIPANDA OK just a touch keen.

In The Running

LEGERITY went to the lead and got some mid-race pressure from VIRGILIO, who had to work up on the outside. A FAIR tempo was set-up overall.

The Result

Others tired and LEGERITY (2nd) battled on, but CHIPANDA (1st) found space late and surged straight past up the inside. ARGIE BARGIE (3rd) made some ground out wider.

The Interest

A small field and the classiest 2yo got the prize. Daughter of Sepoy CHIPANDA covers the ground beautifully and was simply too good once she found room. LEGERITY a nice run too and the others had their chance. MURRMAID was very well beaten after winning a trial and starting at $12. Follow CHIPANDA.

Race 2 LEILANI AND LUSKIN STAR HANDICAP

Tempo tricks over the middle distance

steady tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Dance of Heroes Chris Waller Rory Hutchings 3 58.0
2 Hipparchus Glenn Thornton Brenton Avdulla 6 56.5
3 Ghost Protocol Paul Perry Sam Clipperton 5 60.0

In The Yard

Stayers as you would expect, DANCE OF HEROES looked strong and well, DEFROST MY HEART also quite well, GHOST PROTOCOL OK, HIPPARCHUS toned and fine - does he have the sprint?

In The Running

CANDELARA led from DANCE OF HEROES and they controlled the tempo mid-race, setting a STEADY speed. HIPPARCHUS was on the back of DANCE OF HEROES. All horses had to be actively restrained and didn't over-race too badly. HIPPARCHUS started his run 3W on the turn.

The Result

DANCE OF HEROES (1st) sustained his sprint home to just hold off HIPPARCHUS (2nd). GHOST PROTOCOL (3rd) ran on strongly late up the inside, getting onto heels late.

The Interest

Admirable runs from all horses in the top four. SECATEUR (4th) wouldn't go straight for Winona Costin and ran through the line nicely once she got the whip in the right hand. DANCE OF HEROES just too good on the day, he was in the right spot while GHOST PROTOCOL and HIPPARCHUS weren't suited by the tempo. CANDELARA and DEFROST MY HEART very weak. No Follows or Forgives.

Race 3 MERMAN AND SYDESTON HANDICAP

Power and speed is all you need

fair tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Spieth Bryce Heys Sam Clipperton 1 58.5
2 King's Troop Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou Brenton Avdulla 4 60.0
3 Pioneering Chris Waller Christian Reith 7 58.5

In The Yard

SPIETH was simply the most powerful in the yard, KING'S TROOP, BITBURG and NOBLE JOEY all looked neat and professional. WIDE ACCLAIM and PIONEERING both looked fine (want further?)

In The Running

BITBURG took up the running early before FOR ME DAD took over with NOBLE JOEY getting shuffled into an awkward spot without much cover just behind hem. KING'S TROOP took the box seat with SPIETH behind him.

The Result

SPIETH (1st) worked into the clear and dashed to the lead, from KING'S TROOP (2nd), who fought on well up the inside. PIONEERING (3rd) and WIDE ACCLAIM (4th) ran on out wider, the latter laying in over the concluding stages.

The Interest

He's good! SPIETH is a powerful type that relished the Rosehill track and delivered a convincing victory. Nothing could match his sustained sprint, but WIDE ACCLAIM did go as quick as him for a furlong before his run tapered and he laid in towards the end. KING'S TROOP going well and PIONEERING going very well. The right race over 1200m or 1300m next start could see a win in conditions that suit more (she's good in the wet). Follow SPIETH and PIONEERING.

Race 4 TAB HIGHWAY HANDICAP

Grinding the rest into the TAB Highway

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Correspondent Graham Payne Ms Deanne Panya 10 54.0
2 Le Cavalier Norm Gardner Mathew Cahill 2 56.0
3 Pure Choice Danny Williams Jake Pracey-Holmes 1 53.0

In The Yard

A few of these looked well, ZIGANUI, LE CAVALIER, NAGGING and HANGOVER MONDAY all in good order with some strength. ERIKA (neat) and SUPREME LAD looked ok, COTTONWOOD GROVE looked hot and CARIBBEAN CONCERT a bit light.

In The Running

CORRESPONDENT went to the lead with the blinkers on and set-up a massive margin from PURE CHOICE and COTTONWOOD GROVE. NAGGING was forced to chase with no cover and HANGOVER MONDAY was pretty wide too. The pack let young Deanne Panya stride clear without much chasing.

The Result

CORRESPONDENT (1st) held on easily from LE CAVALIER (2nd) and PURE CHOICE (3rd) who both chased through from the inside. ZIGANUI (4th) and ERICA (5th) only running on fairly.

The Interest

There were some questions over stamina in this race and many of the country gallopers couldn't see out the 1500m. Deanne Panya and CORRESPONDENT putting in a mighty effort, streaming to a big lead and holding on. He's been sold to go to WA now and his NSW finale was a good one. Forgive the wide runners, especially NAGGING. HANGOVER MONDAY was galloped on too. Follow CORRESPONDENT (out west!). Forgive NAGGING and HANGOVER MONDAY.

Race 5 PAT HYLAND HANDICAP

Another good filly from the Waller stable

steady tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Tsaritsa Chris Waller Rory Hutchings 3 58.0
2 Royal Tudor Rodney Ollerton Christian Reith 5 58.5
3 Dreamforce John Thompson Sam Clipperton 6 55.5

In The Yard

Waller's fav' TSARITSA looked good, SERIOUS SATIRE quite well from NZ, TREMEZZINA is a muscular type, HIGH SPIRIT and DREAMFORCE looked well. SEEKING ASYLUM is tough and prefers a wet track, so does MORE THAN FABULOUS.

In The Running

ROYAL TUDOR got to the lead and controlled the race from DREAMFORCE on his outside and HIGH SPIRIT out wider. Only a STEADY tempo set-up with fav' TSARITSA stuck back on the rails.

The Result

TSARITSA (1st) got to the outside and revved up, sprinting very well to catch ROYAL TUDOR (2nd) and DREAMFORCE (3rd). MORE THAN FABULOUS (4th) made ground from the back.

The Interest

Another talented youngster from the Waller yard, Hutchings pumping his fist as he crossed the line as he out-rode his claim. Looking at the sectionals this was a big effort and she is well up to black type racing on what we've seen. Her form-lines last prep were black-type given how well others (e.g. Dixie Blossoms) have gone since. MORE THAN FABULOUS delivered a surprising effort for 4th. A horse with 1 win from 20 is hard to get excited about though! Follow TSARITSA.

Race 6 NOEL MCGROWDIE HANDICAP

Taylor takes charge and gets the win

fair tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Our Renaissance Jason Deamer Taylor Marshall 9 58.0
2 Shadow Force Kylie Kennedy Jake Pracey-Holmes 11 58.5
3 Shadow Lord Joseph Pride Sam Clipperton 6 59.5

In The Yard

SKIP COURSE looked big strong and very well, AWASITA was ready to go, muscular, touch of a winter coat first-up. OUR RENAISSANCE solid speedy. No knocks in the yard.

In The Running

SHADOW FORCE took up the running from OUR RENAISSANCE and SHADOW LORD out wider. A FAIR to STEADY tempo was set-up.

The Result

OUR RENAISSANCE (1st) just edged out SHADOW FORCE (2nd) with SHADOW LORD (3rd) sticking on OK.

The Interest

A disappointing race all around. SKIP COURSE unfortunately breaking down straight after the race, the jockey mentioning something felt amiss during the home straight. Aggressive rides from Jake Pracey-Holmes and Taylor Marshall paid dividends. AWASITA and I CAN ROCK only plain. SHADOW LORD and MAD ABOUT YOU ran on as well as anything else, the latter posting a 10.99 for the last 200m, although the overall time was a second slower than SPIETH earlier in the day. No Follows or Forgives.

Race 7 NEVILLE BEGG HANDICAP

Waller the maestro gets yet another winner

fair tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Marenostro Gayna Williams Tye Angland 10 57.5
2 Ryker Peter & Paul Snowden Ms Winona Costin 4 54.0
3 Spy Decoder Anthony Cummings Christian Reith 3 56.0

In The Yard

Not many knocks, GREAT ESTEEM and ROCKOLICIOUS looked well, SPY DECODER OK but touch one-paced? JIAYUGUAN needs further, MARENOSTRO needs softer? LOOPHOLE needs further/softer?

In The Running

RYKER went forward and ended up in the box seat as FOREIGN PRINCE came across to lead with GREAT ESTEEM in 2nd spot. MARENOSTRO was just behind him in a good spot. LOOPHOLE was wide at the back. ROCKOLICIOUS shuffled back in midfield.

The Result

MARENOSTRO (1st) came to the outside while ROCKOLICIOUS (4th) was getting held up on the inside. RYKER (2nd) fought on solidly and SPY DECODER (3rd) had every chance.

The Interest

Waller is a maestro and this horse is getting better and better. A bigger and stronger animal over the last year MARENOSTRO proved that he is no 'wet tracker' today. Favourite ROCKOLICIOUS without much luck on the inside. RYKER yet another place! BERRY DELICIOUS and LOOPHOLE hit the line well enough too. Follow MARENOSTRO. Forgive ROCKOLICIOUS.

Race 8 CECIL GODBY HANDICAP

Melbourne mares measure up in Sydney

fair tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Pindan Pearl Tim Martin Tye Angland 6 57.0
2 Distraught John O'Shea Taylor Marshall 13 59.5
3 Sebrina Bjorn Baker Ms Deanne Panya 2 63.5

In The Yard

HARLEM LADY scopey and nice (will get further), LOFIEL looked neat strong and fit enough, SEBRINA athletic and ok. No real knocks in the yard.

In The Running

DISTRAUGHT was urged to take up the lead from MUY BIEN with no cover and LOFIEL in the box seat. PINDAN PEARL was held together at the back of the field. HARLEM LADY very slow out the back.

The Result

DISTRAUGHT (2nd) kept going well in the straight, but couldn't hold off PINDAN PEARL (1st), who dashed down the outside. SEBRINA (3rd) sustained a decent run and she locked in SONG AND LAUGHTER (4th) and DREAM LANE (5th) on her inside, who both could have placed with more room.

The Interest

Tim Martin gets a good one from Melbourne. She was racing very well down south before coming here, often a bit keen in her races so the winkers off and an honest tempo helped. She also seemed to relish the big Rosehill track. The time was good for a BM 78. DISTRAUGHT very good too and no knock SONG AND LAUGHTER and SEBRINA. They can progress now over 1600m on a soft track. Follow PINDAN PEARL, DISTRAUGHT, SONG AND LAUGHTER and SEBRINA.

Race 9 JOE BROWN MBE HANDICAP

Bright yellow silks appear from the darkness

fair tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Le Cordon Bleu Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes Christian Reith 10 59.0
2 Powerline Kris Lees Ms Samantha Clenton 7 60.0
3 Caped Crusader Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott Adam Hyeronimus 8 61.0

In The Yard

Some nice sprinters in the yard, MOHAVE and SHE'S MISS DEVINE had nice shine to coat, SEBRING SUN a powerful type ready to go, LE CORDON BLEU also looked big and strong.

The Result

LE CORDON BLEU (1st) was too strong to the line, POWERLINE (2nd) ran on up the inside and CAPED CRUSADER (3rd) stuck on and beat home GRUNDERZEIT (4th) who had loomed up strongly.

The Interest

Drama for those watching off course after all coverage was lost 10 seconds into the run. Sky ran a race replay 5 minutes later once the 'satellite issue' was resolved (ok... who kicked the cable!?). LE CORDON BLEU produced a good finish fresh from the in-form Hawkes stable. CAPED CRUSADER very brave up on the pace and GRUNDERZIET weak again over the last 50m, laying in just when he looked like the winner. SHE'S MISS DEVINE very poor. FIGTREE not finding much room again. Follow CAPED CRUSADER and FIGTREE.
