Yard to the Post @ Rosehill Gardens

Race Day: Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, 30 July 2016

A memorable day at Rosehill Gardens with Chris Waller breaking his own record for Sydney winners in a season. The record now stands at 169 and only the masterful Kiwi has a hope of matching that incredible figure in the near future.

He's been a revelation for Australian racing and his superstar Winx is only weeks from returning to the track.

One of his three wins on the day came from MARENOSTRO in the feature Listed Winter Challenge over 1,500 metres. The big strong son of Duelled was given a perfect run on a steady tempo by Tye Angland and grabbed the leader OXFORD POET late in the race.

The most impressive winners weren't Waller runners though, John Sargent's ESTEBAN continued to destroy middle-distance fields with a five length victory in Race 2 and Gregory Mcfarlane's SUPER TYCOON scorched clear up the rails to win Race 7 by a widening 3.8 lengths. It was the fourth win in a row for ESTEBAN and third in a row for SUPER TYCOON, both gallopers more than capable of showing up at Group level.

SUPER TYCOON will be freshened up and ESTEBAN could be an Autumn contender for next season, Sargent indicating that the improving galloper had "done enough" this campaign.

A full review will be on-line Sunday at 6pm..

Race 1 HYLAND RACE COLOURS HANDICAP

A golden ride gets this youngster home

fair tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Golden Organic Matthew Vella Tye Angland 12 57.0
2 High Mist Chris Waller Hugh Bowman 13 58.0
3 Lord Macau Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott Tommy Berry 1 58.0

In The Yard

The experienced 2yos well. HARPER'S CHOICE & GOLDEN ORGANIC both sleek coat, fit. HIGH MIST, SALSONIC & FANFARON nice types. LORD MACAU solid type. ENTERPRISE MOUNT heavy type & OK.

In The Running

SALSONIC and BLACK ON GOLD were slow to begin. LORD MACAU led from GOLDEN ORGANIC. SUGAR BELLA just off them wide and HIGH MIST four wide in midfield. A bit of a start, stop and start again tempo, but FAIR overall. MAGICALEASE was a touch keen behind the leaders at times and SHAZEE LEE was unsettled at the back. BLACK ON GOLD was held up making a run and FANFARON couldn't find much room at a key point either.

The Result

In a bunched finish GOLDEN ORGANIC (1st) fought on best on-pace to hold off a surge from HIGH MIST (2nd) out wider and SALSONIC (4th) up the rails. LORD MACAU (3rd) kept on.

The Interest

Only 3.1 lengths from 1st to 12th thanks to the stop-start ride (..a smart one) from Tommy Berry on the leader. Perhaps a touch of ON-PACE bias too. The Anthony Cummings yard can get their horses fit early and GOLDEN ORGANIC showed strength at only his third start, also well ridden by Tye Angland. The best run of the race was clearly HIGH MIST out wide though, while BLACK ON GOLD was unlucky. FANFARON, SALSONIC and HARPER'S CHOICE all found the line well enough. Even SHAZEE LEE (11th beaten 2.8 lengths) wasn't terrible from the back. Follow HIGH MIST. Forgive BLACK ON GOLD.

Race 2 SCHWEPPES HANDICAP

The money train continues

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Esteban John Sargent Rory Hutchings 8 56.0
2 Magical Stance Ron Quinton Jason Collett 9 58.0
3 Lie Direct Steve Englebrecht Ms Deanne Panya 1 54.0

In The Yard

ZAYAM looking OK, a strong type. MAGICAL STANCE robust strong and likes this track. ESTEBAN strong and still well, only a slight sweat. LIE DIRECT big strong well, but is he a bit dour? LIE DIRECT looking good.

In The Running

LOUD DEBATE led and ESTEBAN came across to sit outside with LIE DIRECT in the box seat. MAGICAL STANCE snagged back to last. SPRINGBOK FLYER and ZAYAM both took off early and put the pressure on.

The Result

ESTEBAN (1st) booted clear when the pressure was on and strode clear by a big margin. MAGICAL STANCE (2nd) ran on from the back. LIE DIRECT (3rd) kept on.

The Interest

Odds of $6, $2.25, $4.6 and $2.25 have been offered up about ESTEBAN for wins by 7.5L, 6.8L, 6.8L and 4.8L his last few starts. Unbelievably he was layed today from $1.5 to $2.25 so there must have been some whispers around about him not being 100%. On form ratings he was simply the best and proved that. Odd rides from Brenton Avdulla (SPRINGBOK FLYER) and Hugh Bowman (ZAYAM) to take him on early, they were both in the market and were flogged by 14.4 lengths and 34.2 lengths after starting early runs. That's even more evidence that ESTEBAN is a star - he breaks other horses hearts. Might and Power in racing style, we will see how far he goes after a spell! Follow ESTEBAN.

Race 3 TAB HIGHWAY PLATE

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 About Time Gavin Groth Anthony Cavallo 16 59.0
2 Akiko Gold Richard & Luke Clarke Tommy Berry 2 57.0
3 Grand Rouge Terry Robinson Hugh Bowman 15 57.5

Race 4 CASINO PRINCE @ VINERY HANDICAP

Waller's lady finally gets the win

strong tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Harlem Lady Chris Waller Brenton Avdulla 4 55.5
2 Frill Seeking Matthew Smith Nick Heywood 6 57.0
3 Extensible Peter & Paul Snowden Kerrin McEvoy 9 55.0

In The Running

ZELDA was slowish then kicked through to lead and got them rolling. EXTENSIBLE had to do some work to get outside the leader. HARLEM LADY not too far off them, she didn't miss the start this time. ZELDA put pressure on and set up a STRONG tempo.

The Result

HARLEM LADY (1st) wound up, got to the outside and finished best. FRILL SEEKING (2nd) and LYCIA (DH 3rd) made their run together and just couldn't sustain it. EXTENSIBLE (HD 3rd) stuck on and hit the lead for a period.

The Interest

On paper it was a steady tempo, but a change of tactics on ZELDA changed the dynamics of this race. HARLEM LADY was ready for 1500m and surged home best. EXTENSIBLE very brave in defeat, she slowed down from 11.65 to 12.14 for her last two sections while HARLEM LADY posted 11.47 and 11.73. The winner and RUSTIC MELODY (7th beaten 3.6 lengths) the only horses to hit the line in less than 12 seconds at the end. Follow EXTENSIBLE, HARLEM LADY and RUSTIC MELODY (at Randwick?).

Race 5 TAB REWARDS HANDICAP

This Kiwi is simply too tough

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Interstellar Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes Tommy Berry 11 58.5
2 Tremor John O'Shea & Tom Charlton Andrew Adkins 2 58.5
3 Rock On Zariz Barbara Joseph, Paul & Matt Jones Ms Winona Costin 9 58.0

In The Running

REWARD FOR FASHION sped to the lead from INTERSTELLAR and they rolled along at a STRONG tempo. FLEETEOR stuck out wide on the pace. ROCK ON ZARIZ and MODHA got right back.

The Result

INTERSTELLAR (1st) fought on from the pace to hold off TREMOR (2nd) and ROCK ON ZARIZ (3rd), who surged through and ended up on the leaders heels for the last 50m.

The Interest

This was a big win, the Kiwi import for the Hawkes team INTERSTELLAR riding a strong pace and still hanging on at the finish. ROCK ON ZARIZ was a bit tight late but wouldn't have won and MODHA never got a shot at them, but she does have a short burst so we'll never know if she would have got there. FLEETEOR (9th beaten 2.8 lengths) absolutely no chance wide on that speed and one to forgive also. Follow INTERSTELLAR. Forgive MODHA and FLEETEOR.

Race 6 MCGRATH ESTATE AGENTS PLATE

Bowman lifts the topweight to the win

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Pioneering Chris Waller Hugh Bowman 1 58.5
2 Dee Nine Elle Tony Gollan Tim Clark 2 55.5
3 Art Nouveau Garry Neale Brenton Avdulla 5 57.0

In The Running

DEE NINE ELLE took up the running and controlled a STEADY tempo with PIONEERING finding the box seat behind. ART NOUVEAU behind PIONEERING in midfield and ZAUNKONIG wide on the speed.

The Result

DEE NINE ELLE (2nd) kicked and got a break, but PIONEERING kept lifting (1st) and was too strong over the last 50m. ART NOUVEAU (3rd) chased home a couple of lengths behind.

The Interest

The same trifecta in the same order as a week ago! These three gallopers all couldn't resist the temptation of a Set Weights race where they were very well placed against he rest of the field. DEE NINE ELLE looked home and simply stopped the last 100m as PIONEERING kept coming. Other runs to note were WE'RE SURE (looked bad, but probably not suited and not much room late) and ZAUNKONIG (just a bad ride from Winona). Waller broke his own record for a season of Sydney winners with this win! No Follows or Forgives.

Race 7 WINTER CHALLENGE

On-pacers control the feature race

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Marenostro Gayna Williams Tye Angland 3 56.5
2 Oxford Poet Kim Waugh Tim Clark 6 57.0
3 Ruling Dynasty Darren Weir Glyn Schofield 5 57.0

In The Running

OXFORD POET controlled the speed at a STEADY tempo and MARENOSTRO moved up on the outside. RULING DYNASTY and ZIN ZAN EDDIE just behind them. ALEGRIA slow to begin and got back.

The Result

MARENOSTRO (1st) got the better of OXFORD POET (2nd) over the finishing stages. RULING DYNASTY (3rd) stuck on to narrowly beat ZIN ZAN EDDIE (4th).

The Interest

The top four in running were the top four over the line in this race, OXFORD POET with every chance in the lead and MARENOSTRO turning the tables from two weeks ago. Good runs from all the stayers resuming and they may have finished on top with a more honest tempo. RULING DYNASTY (4th), ALLERGIC (6th) , SACRED MASTER (8th) and ALEGRIA (9th) all finding the line. ALEGRIA the subject of a big betting plunge that came unstuck as soon as she missed the start. HIMALAYA DREAM also disadvantaged by the very steady speed, he produced a rapid 11 seconds flat between the 400m and 200m before peaking on his run and finishing 5th just 1.4 lengths away. Unfortunately TALES OF GRIMM broke down in the run home. No Follows or Forgives.

Race 8 TAB.COM.AU HANDICAP

A super effort to win three in a row

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Super Tycoon Gregory McFarlane Glyn Schofield 3 56.0
2 Tower of Song Matthew Dale Kerrin McEvoy 7 54.5
3 Dragon Flyer John Thompson Tye Angland 8 55.5

In The Running

SLATE ON EDGE rolled along at a FAIR tempo with NITE ROCKER on his outside. BOLD CIRCLE was stuck wide in midfield. SUPER TYCOON jumped better this time and was midfield on the rails..

The Result

SUPER TYCOON moved up on the inside and surged best the last 200m to stride clear by a big margin. TOWER OF SONG (2nd) and DRAGON FLYER (3rd) ran on to just get NITE ROCKER (4th).

The Interest

This horse is flying! The way he hits the line over 1350m you'd have to suggest longer distances are on the cards soon. He jumped much better this time which was key and that's three city wins in a row now. Good runs from TOWER OF SONG and NITE ROCKER, while DRAGON FLYER scored yet another place. Forgive poor old BOLD CIRCLE after racing wide again (second time in three starts), he can race better at Randwick after a freshen-up now. Forgive BOLD CIRCLE.

Race 9 NSW RACEHORSE OWNERS ASSOCIATION TROPHY

Quaddies sunk by a roughie in the last

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Magnajoy Michael Costa Mr Lester Grace 18 57.5
2 Rose of Man Terry Robinson Tye Angland 6 56.5
3 Coolcraft Gwenda Markwell Hugh Bowman 1 59.5

In The Running

I'M A JET led from MAGNAJOY and they managed to get a cheap section mid-race. NO BAD BLOOD out wider with no cover. ROSE OF MAN with cover behind him.

The Result

MAGANJOY (1st) kicked and fought on to hold ROSE OF MAN (2nd) in the finish. COOLCRAFT (3rd) ran on from midfield to just grab a place.

The Interest

An easy lead made the difference for the winner with the track specialist ROSE OF MAN unlucky off the slower speed. Follow that horse next time on a good track with more tempo. COOLCRAFT produced a nice return too. Horses like CHEEKY BABE and I CAN ROCK didn't have much chance from the back. Follow ROSE OF MAN (at Rosehill).
