Race Day Review - Missile Stakes Day at Royal Randwick
Race Day: Royal Randwick on Saturday, 09 August 2014
The classy gallopers started to come back as the 'early Spring Carnival' kicked off at Royal Randwick. The Anthony Cummings trained 'As Needed' sparked the day with a track record breaking performance in Race 2, winning over 1300m with ease in the sizzling time of 1 minute and 15.4 seconds. His Spring targets include the Epsom Handicap and he retains an entry into the Cox Plate.
The main event of the day was won by the most genuine of sprinters, Sweet Idea. She parades like a barrel, with solid muscle right through her frame, and Messene just couldn't force past her in a close tussle to the line. Tommy Berry (pictured above) rode her perfectly and made it two wins for the day, which were in tribute to his late brother Nathan.
Some exciting gallopers failed to fire in the other feature race. Scissor Kick stayed on best in a lacklustre 'The Rosebud' and the much touted Sarajevo was only plain.
A race-by-race analysis of the day is provided from the mounting yard to the finish. The complete guide from your team at the track.

2 | Tohunga | Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | Tim Clark | 1 | 56.0 | |

Saigon Tea wound up very strongly to win
In The Yard
SAIGON TEA and TOHUNGA paraded best, while LUCKY LIAISON was just a little unsettled.
In The Running
PHRASES jumped best, but TOHUNGA kicked up and took the lead setting an EVEN TEMPO. LUCKY LIAISON made a mid-race move to sit up second.
The Result
SAIGON TEA (1st) wound up down the outside and stayed on best, from TOHUNGA (2nd) who kept on solidly. GEORGEY AIEROPLANE (3rd) ran on also.
The Interest
No real excuses here in the small field. The top two both prefer a bit of chop in the track, so can be followed if they get even more suitable conditions in the future. SAIGON TEA was soft on the line, but she will go up in weight again now. Follow SAIGON TEA and TOHUNGA.

As Needed kicked off his spring campaign with style
In The Yard
YOU'LL NEVER and AS NEEDED paraded best. HUNTER JACK still had some condition and ROCK HERO looked like needed further, a more rangy type than the others. SOCIETY MAN was a touch keen.
In The Running
YOU'LL NEVER was slow to jump and ended up at the back and COOLRING didn't jump that well. SOCIETY MAN pushed on setting a GOOD TEMPO and gave a nice trail to AS NEEDED.
The Result
AS NEEDED (1st) moved up and outclassed SOCIETY MAN (2nd) who kept on bravely. YOU'LL NEVER (3rd) ran on late for a place after being blocked to the 200m.
The Interest
AS NEEDED is simply a better animal than these and he broke the track record for good measure (track was racing fast). He hasn't grown to be as big as potentially hoped, but he remains a classic looking type with scope to be a group level performer. SOCIETY MAN did well and the form will stack up. You'll Never was advantaged by the good tempo, a factor that was balanced by him being blocked for a run. Follow SOCIETY MAN, AS NEEDED and YOU'LL NEVER (over further).

2 | Cocktail Time | Peter Mills | Ms Winona Costin | 9 | 54.0 | |
3 | Specific Choice | Cody Morgan | Tye Angland | 4 | 56.5 |
Bouzy Rouge was just too tough
In The Yard
SOLEMN, CORRYVRECKAN, SPECIFIC CHOICE and. COCKTAIL TIME paraded best . EXPRESS POWER was as usual, just ok. It was noted that CORRYVRECKAN is more of a sprinter, a bulky type.
In The Running
WILD AND PROUD jumped best and IMPERIL was a bit sluggish, but the latter pushed up to lead. He gradually eased back the mid-race sectionals, setting an EVEN TEMPO overall. CORRYVRECKAN moved up to sit second, while SOLEMN was stuck wide near the tail.
The Result
CORRYVRECKAN (4th) quickened to take the lead at the top of the straight, but he tired late and was swamped by BOUZY ROUGE (1st), who ran on through tight gaps. COCKTAIL TIME (2nd) and SPECIFIC CHOICE (3rd) stayed in solidly. As IMPERAL tired, he caused interference to WILD AND PROUD and SLIVOVITZ.
The Interest
The time was fast but not sure the form is great here. BOUZY ROUGE was just too tough for the boys as they all crossed the line pretty tired. CORRYVRECKAN did very well at an unsuitable distance and can be followed back in trip. WILD AND PROUD and SLIVOVITZ looked a bit unlucky, while SPECIFIC CHOICE and COCKTAIL TIME had every chance. Follow CORRYVRECKAN.

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Mr Scary | Ron Quinton | Tim Clark | 2 | 56.5 | |
2 | Tarangower | Paul Messara & Leah Gavranich | Sam Clipperton | 9 | 58.5 | |
3 | Ragtime Cowboy Joe | Matthew Smith | James McDonald | 1 | 58.0 |
Mr Scary stayed on best in a tight finish
In The Yard
Not a bad looking field for a lowered grade race. PENTOMETER, RAGTIME COWBOY JOE, RUNHARDASUN and SAINTLY LAD best, but no major knocks.
In The Running
PRINCE OF SOFIA missed the start hopelessly. RAGTIME COWBOY JOE pushed up to lead and set a GOOD TEMPO, from THE BARONET, MAGNA AMICA and RUNHARDASUN, who were all on-pace. TARANGOWER slid up three wide on the turn and had to work hard as the pace kept up.
The Result
RUNHARDASUN (4th) moved up the inside to take the lead and looked home, but he got tired and MR SCARY (1st) and TARANGOWER (2nd) stayed on better. RAGTIME COWBOY JOE (3rd) fought back for a place. PLENTY SPECIAL (6th) got onto heels late has he tried to wind up.
The Interest
SAINTLY LAD was poor and far from genuine in the run home, laying in for most of the straight. A terrible run as a well-backed favourite. RUNHARDASUN did well after hitting the lead very early in the straight, but RAGTIME COWBOY JOE was even more impressive. He paraded best and seems in great form. MR SCARY has talent, but he also has tricks and everything went his way in this race. PLENTY SPECIAL was unlucky, but he also had the right run. Follow TARANGOWER, RUNHARDASUN and RAGTIME COWBOY JOE.
Race 5 THE ROSEBUD
Angland slices through the pack
Place | Silk | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Gate | Kgs |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Scissor Kick | Paul Messara & Leah Gavranich | Tye Angland | 6 | 56.0 | |
2 | Better Land | Darren Weir | Kerrin McEvoy | 8 | 54.0 | |
3 | Inkling | Peter & Paul Snowden | Joshua Parr | 7 | 59.0 |
Scissor Kick pulled away from a good field late
In The Yard
INKLING looked fit and was the best in the yard. NAYELI was in good enough shape first up, but lacked the power of some of the others.. The strong burly colts SARAJEVO and BETTER LAND were carrying condition. ECHO PRINCE looked well.
In The Running
NAYELI pushed up to lead and set an EVEN TEMPO, from INKLING who sat in second. BETTER LAND was stuck wide near the pace.
The Result
SCISSOR KICK (1st) ran on best late to claim a good win, from a brave BETTER LAND (2nd). INKLING (3rd) had taken the lead early in the straight, but raced greenly in the closing stages.
The Interest
The time wasn't that impressive and they finished in a bunch so indicators are that there were no world beaters in the field. SCISSOR KICK will progress well enough given he looks like he will get further and BETTER LAND did a better job than SARAJEVO in the battle of the burly colts. Don't completely dismiss SARAJEVO though. INKLING was in the right spot mid-race and sprinted well, but once again his racing manners let him down. Follow SCISSOR KICK and BETTER LAND.

2 | Messene | Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes | James McDonald | 1 | 58.5 | |
3 | Rebel Dane | Gary Portelli | Blake Shinn | 4 | 58.5 |
Sweet Idea kept kicking right to the line
In The Yard
BOBAN and REBEL DANE are two of the better looking gallopers you will see and both in great shape. THUMP, WEARY and SWEET IDEA were all ok, the latter just carrying slight condition only. MESSENE had more of a winter coat than most others.
In The Running
SWEET IDEA jumped best to lead, from THUMP, who moved up outside her. An EVEN TEMPO was set up, with MESSENE and REBEL DANE stalking just off the speed. BOBAN missed the start and went back.
The Result
SWEET IDEA (1st) kept kicking as MESSENE (2nd) challenged up the inside. REBEL DANE (3rd) also ran on but couldn't get there. BOBAN (4th) weaved a passage home from the back.
The Interest
REBEL DANE looked well, but he seems to race best after a proper break. Wait until the Autumn for him now! SWEET IDEA is always a good chance, but best runs may be miler/middle-distance types resuming. BOBAN, MESSENE and WEARY are in for good preparations. Follow BOBAN, MESSENE and WEARY.

2 | Rifleman | Tony & Calvin McEvoy | Blake Shinn | 6 | 55.5 | |
3 | Mount Nebo | Allan Denham | Taylor Marshall | 5 | 57.5 |
Target In Sight finished best off a good tempo
In The Yard
MOUNTAIN VIEW and RIFLEMAN looked the standouts in the yard, but MOUNTAIN VIEW was a more athletic type that would be suited to longer distances. MOUNT NEBO, REFLECTANCE, MAYSOON, and SHIVARCHI we all well also. It was noted that TARGET IN SIGHT was carrying some condition, which was not a negative first-up over 1000m
In The Running
EARNEST ERNEST was slow and went back. NUCLEAR CLASS jumped fast and sped along at a GOOD TEMPO with TEXAN LAD. They strung the field out.
The Result
TARGET IN SIGHT (1st) got to the outside and finished best, from RIFLEMAN (2nd) and MOUNT NEBO (3rd) who both maintained solid runs. REFLECTANCE (4th) was blocked at the 200m and finished off well also.
The Interest
The class came to the top with TARGET IN SIGHT scoring a nice win. The other interesting runner was the MOUNTAIN VIEW (traded at over 100/1 on betfair) who paraded in great fashion and looks to have come back very well. REFLECTANCE also put in a good run after having to change course when blocked. MAYSOON probably didn't have things go her way when having to cut back to the inside, but REFLECTANCE's effort was a better run. RIFLEMAN was very solid, but has less progression than the others. Follow TARGET IN SIGHT, REFLECTANCE and MOUNTAIN VIEW.
Race 8 HYLAND RACE COLOURS HANDICAP
The flashiest of types wins the last
Place | Silk | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Gate | Kgs |

1 | I've Got the Looks | Peter & Paul Snowden | Blake Shinn | 1 | 59.0 | |
2 | Oh So Adorable | Garry Clarke | Ms Winona Costin | 4 | 58.0 | |
3 | Miss Promiscuity | David & B Hayes & T Dabernig | Jason Collett | 2 | 55.5 |
I've Got The Looks burst clear late to win
In The Yard
ANGEL BEE, MISS PROMISCUITY and MINEKO paraded best. It was noted that MISS PROMISCUITY was a compact sprinter, probably suited to Royal Randwick. OH SO ADORABLE was unsettled in the yard. ALL CERISE was fit enough, but looked much less powerful than the sprinting types.
In The Running
OH SO ADORABLE moved up to take the lead from ANGEL BEE and MISS PROMISCUITY just behind. A steady EVEN TEMPO was set up.
The Result
I'VE GOT THE LOOKS (1st) searched for room up the inside and exploded late to win from OH SO ADORABLE (2nd) and MISS PROMISCUITY (3rd) who both kept on solidly. MINEKO never found room in the straight to run on.
The Interest
A great win from I'VE GOT THE LOOKS. There were some speedy horses travelling very well on the turn, but she managed to run past all of them. ANGEL BEE had every chance. MISS PROMISCUITY had to cut back to the inside to make its run, which wasn't ideal. MINEKO had absolutely no luck and it simply wasn't the race for ALL CERISE. Follow I'VE GOT THE LOOKS. Forgive ALL CERISE and MINEKO.
