Yard to the Post @ San Domenico Stakes Day
Race Day: Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, 13 August 2016
It's back to the drawing board for Golden Slipper winner CAPITALIST after his colours were lowered by the towering colt STAR TURN (photo) at Rosehill Gardens today in the Group Three San Domenico Stakes. The Hawkes team's son of Star Witness turned the tables after running 6th in the Golden Slipper, stamping himself as a sprinter to watch this Spring.
STAR TURN jumped well and settled outside the lead, only to be joined by CAPITALIST on the turn and for a few moments it looked like there would be a stirring duel down the straight. But CAPITALIST weakened in the closing stages and could only manage 4th behind TANGO RAIN and KENTUCKY MISS.
His poor last 200 metres wouldn't have been a surprise for market watches after a late drift from $1.70 to $2.50 on track.
In other races, Godolphin's ALLERGIC showed his superior stamina to win Race 6 over 1,800 metres, striding clear of Waller's pair LOOPHOLE and MARENOSTRO. And both TESTASHADOW and HIS MAJESTY returned to the track with wins in Races 7 and 8, the latter stamping the quality of the Provincial Championships form last Autumn in an exciting blanket finish.
The track was in the SOFT range all day and played FAIR, giving all horses their chance.
A full review from the yard to the post will be online Sunday at 9am.

3 | Stilettoed Vixen | Terry Evans | Tim Clark | 1 | 54.0 |
In The Yard
EXTENSIBLE shining in the yard with a beautiful coat before the race. No knock most others, nothing obvious to note with TREE OF JESSE, who was backing up a week after a very tough run.
In The Running
LABDIEN was slow to begin and got back on the inside of EXTENSIBLE, while TALTARNI and BELLS OF WAR took up the running at a FAIR tempo. TREE OF JESSE was stuck wide on the pace.
The Result
LABDIEN (2nd) picked up through the pack, but she was no match for EXTENSIBLE (1st) surging down the outside. STILETTOED VIXEN (3rd) fought on up the inside to beat home BELLS OF WAR (4th) for a place.
The Interest
The progressive EXTENSIBLE simply too strong for these horses after being ridden quieter this time. She has a big finishing surge and is sure to get further. LABDIEN, STILETTOED VIXEN and BELLS OF WAR the only horses putting up any competition as the rest of the field struggled more than 7 lengths behind. Follow EXTENSIBLE.

3 | Farah | Peter H Bloomfield | Tommy Berry | 7 | 55.5 |
In The Yard
LUXURY looked fine and FARAH shone in the yard, good muscle and strength. NO WHEN TO HOLD EM OK, but not as powerful as many others. BESIDE YOU just an early season 3yo.
In The Running
VIXEN LASS went straight to the lead BESIDE YOU was restrained to the back. TIBIDABO was a bit wide early before getting a touch keen when restrained. FARAH got the box seat.
The Result
BESIDE YOU (1st) came to the outside and ran on to just get there from TIBIDABO (2nd), who fought on through the pack and FARAH (3rd) up the inside. It was a blanket finish.
The Interest
Not much between these horses and the winner was a two-year-old only a few weeks ago! BESIDE YOU clearly has more upside than the rest of these, trainer Frank Hayes talking her up after the race. And so he should after three straight wins to start her career, all swooping from last! TIBIDABO didn't run like a 100/1 shot and was even a touch unlucky. She'd won a trial before a scoring in a maiden at Coonamble and then finishing 12th of 12 at Gilgai. Follow BESIDE YOU.

3 | So Willie | Chris Waller | Rory Hutchings | 12 | 58.5 |
In The Yard
DUBAIINSTYLE and FIREBIRD FLYER both fine after running in the testing conditions last weekend. THUNDER DOWN UNDER and MAGICAL STANCE both nice muscular types. RED DUBAWI only a lean type not suited to Rosehill.
In The Running
EGYPTIAN RULER took up the running from LOUD DEBATE and controlled a steady tempo early. THUNDER DOWN UNDER and SO WILLIE got right back. MORE THAN FABULOUS was pushed out wide and MAGICAL STANCE over-raced early. LOUD DEBATE started an early sprint for home, ensuring a FAIR tempo overall.
The Result
DUBAIINSTYLE (1st) and FIREBIRD FLYER (2nd) both came from midfield and drove clear in the finish. SO WILLIE (3rd) ran on from last.
The Interest
This race was dominated by the early season form-line of DUBAIINSTYLE and SO WILLIE (big run from last) and the improving Waller stayer FIREBIRD FLYER. Not to mention the Waller stable (he trains all 3!). In a driving finish, DUBAIINSTYLE narrowly scored his second win in 7 days after FIREBIRD FLYER had peeled off his back. THUNDER DOWN UNDER and MAGICAL STANCE (over-raced) were just OK from the back. MORE THAN FABULOUS stuck wide and better away from Rosehill. DOUKHAN lame in the off-foreleg and DOC HOLLIDAY blocked when starting to wind up at the 200m mark. Follow DUBAIINSTYLE, FIREBIRD FLYER and SO WILLIE. Forgive MORE THAN FABULOUS.

2 | Lanciato | Mark Newnham | Koby Jennings | 3 | 60.5
3 | Zaunkonig | Richard & Will Freedman | Blake Shinn | 14 | 58.0 |
In The Yard
PIRATE BEN a flashy athletic type, DARCI'S AFFAIR leaner and GOT UNDERS a touch one-paced, are they suited here? LANCIATO seeming to hold condition deep into his campaign.
In The Running
GOT UNDERS was urged to the lead from ZAUNKONIG, who over-raced early on. PIRATE BEN was pushed three wide on the speed with DARCI'S AFFAIR just behind. LANCIATO a couple of pairs back on the rails. There wasn't much room for LANCIATO, MR DARCY and AURORA GLOW early in the straight.
The Result
GOT UNDERS (1st) maintained a good gallop to win clearly from LANCIATO (2nd), who ran on OK. ZAUNKONIG (3rd) and DARCI'S AFFAIR (5th) kept on. MR DARCY (4th) and AURORA GLOW (7th) ran on late.
The Interest
A clear margin to a very honest horse. GOT UNDERS doesn't win often, but the track staying well into the soft range helped him out-fight the younger and more brilliant horses chasing. Only his 5th win from 40 starts after debuting in 2012, Much deserved! LANCIATO (drier better?) seemed to have his chance, but MR DARCY and AURORA GLOW probably didn't quite find the room they needed. ZAUNKONIG still learning after visibly over-racing in the run. Forgive MR DARCY, AURORA GLOW and PIRATE BEN.

2 | Tango Rain | Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou | Kerrin McEvoy | 5 | 56.0
3 | Kentucky Miss | Joseph Pride | Brenton Avdulla | 1 | 54.0 |
In The Yard
STAR TURN a big dominant type and no knocks on the others. CAPITALIST looked fit enough to perform first-up.
In The Running
TANGO RAIN took up the running from STAR TURN, who jumped nicely, while KENTUCKY MISS was restrained to the box seat after jumping well. CAPITALIST right on the back of STAR TURN.
The Result
STAR TURN (1st) loomed up and was strong to the line, beating home a game TANGO RAIN (2nd) and KENTUCKY MISS (3rd), who was held up early in the straight. CAPITALIST (4th) weakened.
The Interest
A new 3yo star? Time will only tell, STAR TURN a big powerful type that seems to relish the Rosehill track. The reports are he's bigger, stronger and more genuine this campaign. STAR TURN and KENTUCKY MISS both very game. As for CAPITALIST, we've seen him do this before and bounce back so don't rule him out. The market drift $1.7 to $2.5 was more telling than Shinn's comments ("unbalanced in straight"). Perhaps he was just not ready? Follow STAR TURN.

3 | Marenostro | Gayna Williams | Koby Jennings | 2 | 60.0 |
In The Yard
SACRED MASTER and LORD DISICK toned staying types that may need further, ORBEC seemed OK (trainer suggested not fit yet). ALLERGIC robust and well. SONG AND LAUGHTER hot in the yard.
In The Running
MARENOSTRO led ORBEC (whipped around the field) at a STEADY tempo from ALLERGIC, who jumped well. LOOPHOLE just behind them. SACRED MASTER shuffled back to last after Waller suggested he may be in midfield. The pace picked up leading to the turn.
The Result
ALLERGIC (1st) drove clear late for a clear win from LOOPHOLE (2nd), who chased well. MARENOSTRO (3rd) was run down late.
The Interest
Such a strong robust type, ALLERGIC is handling O'Shea's training well and keeps getting better. Everything went his way here, but given his real strength is stamina and a finishing surge, the steady tempo didn't let us see the best of him. LOOPHOLE so honest, MARENOSTRO perhaps finding 1800m a touch too far (..only a touch though!) and no luck for SACRED MASTER at the back. Follow ALLERGIC. Forgive SACRED MASTER.

In The Yard
TESTASHADOW, SADLER'S LAKE and COSMIC CUBE all fit enough first-up. SENSE OF OCCASSION a light efficient type that might want it wetter over 1400m?
In The Running
OXFORD POET took over and TESTASHADOW pushed COSMIC CUBE out wider. MAGIC HURRICANE slow before being urged into the pack. SADDLER'S LAKE restrained to last.
The Result
OXFORD POET (3rd) fought on, but TESTASHADOW (1st) came off his heels and got past. SADLER'S LAKE (2nd) stormed home from last.
The Interest
Everything seemed right for TESTASHADOW in this race, the 51kg on his back thanks to Deanne Panya's claim and two good trials (the latest over 1250m) setting him up for a first-up assault. OXFORD POET tough as always, while Waller's pair of fresh horses had differing luck. SADLER'S LAKE stormed home and COSMIC CUBE struggled for 6th after getting pushed wider mid-race. Rory Hutchings was on the receiving end of a smart Deanne Panya move there! Follow TESTASHADOWN and SADLER'S LAKE. Forgive COSMIC CUBE.

In The Yard
EL SASSO athletic, a drying 1100m not ideal? SNOOPY well and ready to go, but not the biggest type. HIS MAJESTY and SARAJEVO powerful and well.
In The Running
HIDDEN WARRIOR went to the lead from KANAGIRILLA JOY and SNOOPY in the box seat. SARAJEVO and HIS MAJESTY restrained to the back. EL SASSO stuck wide just off the pace.HIS MAJESTY sprinted up the inside early in the straight but could't find much room and SNOOPY was right on the heels of the leaders early in the straight. MR ENTERTAINER also held up behind the pack.
The Result
In blanket finish, SNOOPY (3rd) got out and moved up to the lead, but HIS MAJESTY (1st) burst through the pack late and SARAJEVO (2nd) stormed home down the outside. SAVOUREUX (3rd) and DECISION TIME (5th) right up there in the finish too.
The Interest
Wow! 200 metres from home the big grey HIS MAJESTY was going to be the hard-luck story of the day! That was until Tim Clark found a needle-eye opening on the Wyong-trained gelding just in time. He has a big motor (high Spint and Surge over 1100m) and hit the line like a train. SARAJEVO also impressed. SNOOPY not far off and perhaps suited on a different track? KANGARILLA JOY unfortunately bled and will be banned for 3 months. Follow HIS MAJESTY. Forgive KANGARILLA JOY and MR ENTERTAINER.

2 | Encostanati | Bjorn Baker | Ms Deanne Panya | 15 | 61.5
3 | Conarchie | Clarry Conners | Tommy Berry | 12 | 59.0 |
In The Yard
First-uppers APPOINT PERCY and RHODIN DRIVE OK, some improvement to come. SALTHOUSE and WE'RE SURE athletic looking types. EVER SO NATURAL muscular and probably suited to a drying Rosehill track.
In The Running
RUTHERGLEN took up the running from ENCOSTANATI and CONARCHIE out three wide. TAKEWING and WE'RE SURE were slow and well back. NITE ROCKER a touch keen on the inside.
The Result
ENCOSTANATI (2nd) broke right away early in the straight and looked home, but WE'RE SURE (1st) surged the last 200m and arrived on the line. There was a gap back to CONARCHIE (3rd) and the pack.
The Interest
Rosehill saved the best finish 'til last. Deanne Panya kicked for home early on ENCOSTANATI and the mix of him tiring in the last 100m along with WE' RE SURE's finishing strength left us with a result that didn't look possible a furlong from home! Blake Shinn said he got the 'shivers' with 100m to go as they flew home. CONARCHIE brave after getting stuck wide. DRAGON FLYER 4th and no suprises there.. Follow ENCOSTANATI and WE'RE SURE.
