Race Day Review - Run to the Rose Day at Rosehill Gardens
Race Day: Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, 30 August 2014
Bart and James Cummings took the honours at a sodden Rosehill Gardens as their professional colt Hallowed Crown (widest in red above) won the "Run to the Rose" with a withering burst down the outside. Every now and then you come across a horse that has great heart to fight on at the end and it looks like Grandfather and Grandson have an exciting prospect for the Spring.
The other feature race of the day - The Premier's Cup - was dominated by Gai Waterhouse with her two most recent imports, Greatwood and Bonfire. The latter was very strong right to the line and the plans are to take him south for the big Carnival Cups.
The track was wet and had the usual 'fast lanes' that occur on the cambered Rosehill straight. Early races were dominated by horses on the rails, before the bias evened out later in the day.
A race-by-race analysis of the day is provided from the mounting yard to the finish. The complete guide from your team at the track.

Race 1 TAB EARLY QUADDIE HANDICAP
Godolphin unveil a Spring Champion hopeful
Place | Silk | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Gate | Kgs |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Sweynesse | John O'Shea & Tom Charlton | Kerrin McEvoy | 7 | 55.5 | |
2 | First Seal | John Thompson | Hugh Bowman | 1 | 55.5 | |
3 | Hampton Court | Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | Tim Clark | 5 | 56.5 |
Sweynesse stayed on strongly late to win
In The Yard
BURNING PASSION, FIRST SEAL and ECHO PRINCE were the best in the yard. IDYLLIC SCENERY seemed fit enough and looked well. SWEYNESSE nice, but lacked the power of the others.
In The Running
FIRST SEAL jumped best and took the box seat as the Waterhouse horses rolled forward and set an EVEN TEMPO. HAMPTON COURT led from ECHO PRINCE. SWEYNESSE went right back.
The Result
HAMPTON COUIRT (3rd) drifted wider and gave a kick. SWEYNESSE (1st) stayed on very strongly up the rails to win and FIRST SEAL (2nd) worked home well.
The Interest
Some of the horses drifted wider and the top few took advantage by sticking to the rails. SWEYNESSE has great staying potential and it is a big help that he can handle wet tracks. One to follow. FIRST SEAL looks a nice type and can be followed also. A strange ride on BURNING PASSION, and even though she was too short in the market, she could be forgiven due to being taken very wide down the home straight. Follow FIRST SEAL and SWEYNESSE. Forgive BURNING PASSION.
Race 2 MORE THAN READY HANDICAP
Survival of the fittest in a real heavy track slog
Place | Silk | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Gate | Kgs |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Ambivalent | Ken Lantry | Jason Collett | 1 | 54.0 | |
2 | Zazparella | Michael Moroney & Glen Thompson | Brodie Loy | 3 | 57.5 | |
3 | Miss Venus | Les Bridge | Taylor Marshall | 7 | 55.5 |
Ambivalent handled the mud best to get the prize
In The Yard
SCARLETINI, BLAZING DRAGON, ROYAL AMATI, AMBIVALENT and DON'T TELL LINDA all looked good in the yard. FAIRYLAND was not as efficient as the others and a bit stocky. CASINO GIFT looked poor in comparison.
In The Running
SCARLETINI and CUBAN STAR were both slow to begin. MISS VENUS rolled to the lead and set a GOOD TEMPO, from DON'T TELL LINDA, SENTA HELGA and ZAZPARELLA.
The Result
MISS VENUS (3rd) pushed on and pinched a break, but tired late. AMBIVALENT (1st) moved up from midfield and stayed on best, while ZAZPARELLA (3rd) stuck on gamely.
The Interest
We got to find out the women from the girls here. AMBIVALENT handled the wet best along with ZAZPARELLA to fight out the finish. MISS VENUS did a great job and she can perform on the dry, so could be the one to follow. ROYAL AMATI didn't go forward this time and she got stuck wide before staying on well late. CUBAN STAR showed how strong she is by coming wide on the turn and maintaining a strong run to the line. Bring on a 3000m race soon! Note that the grade of this race was pretty low so it will be hard for some of these to bob up in a Saturday race over the Spring. Follow MISS VENUS. Forgive ROYAL AMATI.
Race 3 SCHWEPPES HANDICAP
Georgey and Hughie glide across the mud
Place | Silk | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Gate | Kgs |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Georgey Aeroplane | Chris Waller | Hugh Bowman | 1 | 56.5 | |
2 | Forever Crazy | Chris Waller | Tye Angland | 7 | 59.5 | |
3 | Khalid | Paul Perry | Thomas Huet | 8 | 54.0 |
Georgey Aeroplane cleared out for a big win
In The Yard
TOHUNGA, ZATAGLIO and AY NO DIGAS paraded best. No knock PRINCE OF SOFIA. FOREVER CRAZY looked very well but doesn't look like a stayer
In The Running
PRINCE OF SOFIA wasn't too slow this time and he was stoked up to lead. TOHUNGA did some early work to come across and MULLET MAN was in the box seat. They rolled along at a GOOD TEMPO. PENTOMETER got right back.
The Result
GEORGEY AEROPLANE (1st) edged up closer to the inside and stormed away. FOREVER CRAZY (2nd) stayed on solidly up the inside until tiring late. KHALID (3rd) was the best of the bunch that came wider.
The Interest
Waller is the master of these stayers and he got GEORGEY AEROPLANE in great shape to win. The track was favouring horses near the inside and the runs of those that came wider could be better than they looked, including AY NO DIGAS and KHALID. KHALID especially was staying on strongly late and he looked a nice type in the yard. FOREVER CRAZY did an amazing job considering the is more of a 1600m - 2000m type. Jo Jo Girl just wasn't up to it today with the bigger weight and you just hope the tough girl can bounce back. Follow GEORGEY AEROPLANE, AY NO DIGAS, KHALID and FOREVER CRAZY (over shorter).
Race 4 CELLARBRATIONS HANDICAP
A nippy filly proves too quick
Place | Silk | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Gate | Kgs |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Maroon Bay | Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes | James McDonald | 7 | 54.5 | |
2 | Runway Star | Phillip Stokes | Kerrin McEvoy | 1 | 55.0 | |
3 | Maysoon | Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes | Taylor Marshall | 9 | 58.0 |
Maroon Bay got to the lead and gave a kick
In The Yard
RUNWAY STAR was the best in the yard. JEMERICA and MAROON BAY were also good. MISS ALIBI was keen as usual, looking a bit unsettled.
In The Running
MAROON BAY moved up to the lead and set an EVEN TEMPO. RUNWAY STAR took the box seat and MAYSOON raced on-pace in second. OH SO ADORABLE got stuck wide just off the leader with JEMERICA on her back.
The Result
MAROON BAY (1st) quickened well enough to hold them off. RUNWAY STAR (2nd) pushed out late from the box seat but couldn't pick up fast enough after a slight bumping duel with MAYSOON (3rd), who wasn't far away.
The Interest
The biggest interest was so many jockeys coming wide when the inside was racing well. MAROON BAY deserves her win, but she did get the breaks and a few had excuses, including JEMERICA. The run of STOLEN KISSES was interesting. She is usually a grade below these, but she put in a run well beyond expectations storming home out wide. She qualifies for easier races so could be one to follow on a Heavy track midweek. RUNWAY STAR looked great in the yard and raced strongly, a mare that could be ready to win soon in the right race. MAYSOON also was very solid and has more explosive speed when it is dry. Follow RUNWAY STAR and MAYSOON. Forgive JEMERICA.
Race 5 TAB QUADDIE HANDICAP
Waller runners come back to Sydney with a bang
Place | Silk | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Gate | Kgs |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Rugged Cross | Darren Weir | Tommy Berry | 5 | 55.0 | |
2 | Tougher Than Ever | Chris Waller | Tim Clark | 3 | 58.0 | |
3 | Eigelstein | Chris Waller | Tye Angland | 4 | 58.5 |
Rugged Cross sped home best after recent racing in Melbourne
In The Yard
MIGHTY LUCKY, TOUGHER THAN EVER, BEYOND THANKFUL and RUGGED CROSS were all well. DEANE MARTIN looked a leaner type that would need further.
In The Running
BEYOND THANKFUL jumped best to lead and set a SLOW TEMPO. MIGHTY LUCKY strode up to second and TOUGHER THAN EVER took the box seat.
The Result
RUGGED CROSS (1st) peeled out from just off the speed and sprinted best, from TOUGHER THAN EVER (2nd) , who made a solid run from the box seat. EIGELSTEIN (3rd) sprinted well from the back half.
The Interest
The favourite BEYOND THANKFUL got completely out sprinted by some faster short-course types. Conditions suited TOUGHER THAN EVER and RUGGED CROSS, but they are not the most reliable commodities to follow going forward. GALLATIN is interesting and is warming up nicely this prep, as is LUCKY CHAPPY. Don't be too harsh on DEANE MARTIN, who will need longer distances, a more genuine tempo and far better rides than the "exploratory mission" that Brenton Avdulla took him on out wide. Not convinced the race will be a good form reference going forward. No follows or forgives.
Race 6 MTA NSW RUN TO THE ROSE
A pure professional shows his class
Place | Silk | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Gate | Kgs |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Hallowed Crown | Bart & James Cummings | Joshua Parr | 7 | 58.0 | |
2 | Kumaon | John O'Shea & Tom Charlton | Sam Clipperton | 4 | 56.0 | |
3 | Ygritte | Darren Weir | Tim Clark | 10 | 54.0 |
Hallowed Crown stormed down the outside to win
In The Yard
ALMALAD, NOSTRADAMUS, SARAJEVO and YGRITTE all looked good. HALLOWED CROWN was in nice shape with an athletic frame, but lacked the power of others. SCRATCH ME LUCKY had some condition. SNIIPER FIRE looked well, but was smaller than the others.
In The Running
SNIPER FIRE moved to the lead and set an EVEN TEMPO. YGRITTE moved up to second. ALMALAD and NOSTRADAMUS had a bumping duel early on as they looked for their positions. MODOC and SARAJEVO got well back.
The Result
HALLOWED CROWN (1st) pulled out widest and stormed home to win. KUMAON (2nd) ran home very solidly and YGRITTE (3rd) hung on for a place.
The Interest
Every now and then you get a horse that just is a pure professional from day one. HALLOWED CROWN is a cracker of a horse. There are some questions about whether he has the power to sprint on a fast surface, but we can find that out soon. KUMAON looks ready for a big preparation too after a strong first-up run. Don't want to be too hard on ALMALAD and NOSTRADAMUS, but you would have hoped for better, even though the track was heavy. LAW once again over-raced and he will prove a continued headache for Waller has he tries to get him to settle. SARAJEVO was only ok, and while he may improve back to a dry track, he may simply be a level below the hopes of the Godolphin stable. Follow HALLOWED CROWN and KUMAON.
Race 7 PREMIER'S CUP
Waterhouse keeps things in control
Place | Silk | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Gate | Kgs |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Greatwood | Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | Tommy Berry | 1 | 54.0 | |
2 | Bonfire | Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | Tim Clark | 3 | 58.0 | |
3 | He's Your Man | Chris Waller | Hugh Bowman | 16 | 56.5 |
Greatwood set a slow tempo and kicked away
In The Yard
There were no standouts in the yard. CIRCLE OF FAME looked poor in comparison to others, while ORIENTAL LADY lacked power and WHO SHOT THEBARMAN was unsettled. TUPAC AMARU had a nice glow to his coat. BONFIRE and GREATWOOD were bot fit and well, as they were first up.
In The Running
GREATWOOD jumped from the inside gate to soft lead from HE'S YOUR MAN and BONFIRE. CELTIC PRINCE was posted three wide near the pace. A SLOW TEMPO was set up with no early pressure.
The Result
GREATWOOD (1st) kicked to win. BONFIRE (2nd) and HE'S YOUR MAN (3rd) kept fighting from their on-pace positions, while WISH COME TRUE (4th) ran on well from midfield.
The Interest
GREATWOOD was ridden perfectly and had the others chasing as he gave a kick off the slow tempo. BONFIRE was strong on the line, and as a more impressive animal, he could be the one to follow. WISH COME TRUE did well to get so close first-up on the Heavy track. Don't dismiss some of the horses that were back in the pack that never got a chance, the best of which seemed to be OPINION. TUPAC AMARU also is known as a horse with no acceleration, which meant he was hopeless to compete down the straight. Follow WISH COME TRUE and BONFIRE. Forgive OPINION.
Race 8 HYLAND RACE COLOURS HANDICAP
Power and athleticism win the last
Place | Silk | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Gate | Kgs |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Weinholt | David Brideoake & Matt Jenkins | Ms Linda Meech | 11 | 56.0 | |
2 | Cluster | Peter & Paul Snowden | Joshua Parr | 13 | 57.0 | |
3 | Mount Nebo | Allan Denham | Ms Winona Costin | 6 | 57.5 |
The Moody trained Weinholt was too strong late
In The Yard
MOUNT NEBO looked in good shape on the back up. CLUSTER, WEINHOLT, MURDER OF CROWS and MASTERSTROKE also looked well. TWO BLUE had some condition, while PAEDEROS lacked power in comparison to the others.
In The Running
SCANDIVA jumped best, but FORT SUMTER sped across and took over the lead, setting an EVEN TEMPO overall. MOUNT NEBO was stuck three wide near the pace and CLUSTER got back to the tail.
The Result
WEINHOLT (1st) stormed home up the inside to win, from CLUSTER (2nd), who sprinted well down the outside. MOUNT NEBO (3rd) fought on solidly as usual.
The Interest
The two strongest 1200m sprinters got the top two spots here, despite the wet weather. MOUNT NEBO did have a tough run on pace, but given he enjoys the wet conditions, the top two seem the best bet going forward. MURDER OF CROWS was very solid running on and REFLECTANCE caught the eye running on from the back. The latter will be better suited on a dry Royal Randwick and trialled very well before this campaign. Follow CLUSTER, WEINHOLT and REFLECTANCE.
