Yard to the Post @ All Aged Stakes Day

Race Day: Royal Randwick on Saturday, 18 April 2015

Tough gallopers excelled on a well-used Royal Randwick track as Sydney's Autumn Carnival came to an exciting close.

The durable DISSIDENT (picture above) won the feature race of the day, the Group One All Aged Stakes, and the ever-reliable OUR BOY MALACHI out-fought the other sprinters in the Group Three Hall Mark Stakes.

They joined the likes of PASADENA GIRL and RUGGED CROSS on a day where a fierce will to win often made the difference.

PASADENA GIRL's win was dynamic in the Champagne Stakes for two-year-olds over a mile. She picked up and sprinted in a fashion that reminded us of Lucia Valentina at her best. A black-type career awaits for the well-bred daughter of Savabeel.

It's onto a different career for DISSIDENT. The multiple Group One winner increasing his fee before a lucrative career at stud.

A race-by-race review is provided from the yard to the post. The complete guide, from your team at the track.

Race 1 EGROUP SECURITY SPRINT

A flashy Lass sprints past

fair tempo
Bias: on-rails

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Dublin Lass Peter & Paul Snowden Hugh Bowman 1 55.5
2 Aussies Love Sport Peter Robl Blake Shinn 2 58.0
3 Mohave John O'Shea & Tom Charlton James McDonald 6 54.5

Dublin Lass was eased down on the line

In The Yard

PRIVATE SECRETARY looked well, with good power in her frame. BOSS LANE also looked good, a tougher type that enjoys Randwick. AUSSIES LOVE SPORT bit hot and some condition, while MOHAVE and DUBLIN LASS looked fit enough to run well first-up. BACHMAN has returned nicely, but needs further.

In The Running

MOHAVE drove forward, with BOSS LANE working up on his outside. OPEN BOOK was just in behind them. The early sections were a bit steady, but overall a FAIR TEMPO was set up.

The Result

MOHAVE (3rd) kept on, but was no match for DUBLIN LASS (1st), who threaded up the inside and AUSSIES LOVE SPORT (2nd), who ran on.

The Interest

It seemed there was a NEAR RAILS BIAS just for the first race, with the track cutting up throughout the day and evening out. You could forgive PRIVATE SECRETARY (she came to a lesser part of the track), but the shine has come off her a bit, especially given OPEN BOOK (similar form to her) also didn't measure up. DUBLIN LASS is a serious mare that just needs cover to show her best - she's only got a short sprint. AUSSIES LOVE SPORT is another one to follow after a strong return for Vandyke (now gelded). BOSS LANE bounced back at his favourite track with a respectable 4th. Follow DUBLIN LASS and AUSSIES LOVE SPORT. Forgive PRIVATE SECRETARY.

Race 2 JOHNNIE WALKER FRANK PACKER PLATE

McEvoy uses his options

steady tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Hi World Kane Harris Kerrin McEvoy 9 56.5
2 Wine Tales Chris Waller Tommy Berry 7 54.5
3 Merion Michael Moroney & Glen Thompson Steven Arnold 3 56.5

Hi World got a cheap lead and gave a kick

In The Yard

Most horses looked fine, but different types. MERION is a nice balanced galloper, while HI WORLD has a touch more power. WINE TALES is the most powerful, she looks more like a sprinter.

In The Running

HI WORLD worked across to lead and once he got there he dropped anchor, ensuring a STEADY TEMPO. MERION was a few pairs back and WINE TALES was last.

The Result

HI WORLD (1st) gave a good kick to hold off WINE TALES (2nd), who sprinted well down the outside with MERION (3rd). There was a big gap back to the pack.

The Interest

The top three were far superior and HI WORLD simply had more tools in his armoury than the other two, a horse that can race on-pace and sprint. WINE TALES may have enjoyed the slow speed even though she got back, a horse with a good sprint. MERION was fine and the rest weren't. Follow HI WORLD, MERION and WINE TALES (maybe back in distance).

Race 3 KARI J H B CARR STAKES

A Sweet finish for Kathy

strong tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Slightly Sweet Jason Coyle Ms Kathy O'Hara 3 56.0
2 Anyaas David & B Hayes & T Dabernig Christian Reith 1 54.0
3 Sebrina Bjorn Baker Glen Boss 7 54.0

Slightly Sweet swept past over the last furlong

In The Yard

Most fillies well. MATILIJA looked fit, while SLIGHTLY SWEET and PEEPING were both neat types that seemed suited to a tough Randwick track. ANYAAS was a bit hot, but Vandyke's horses almost always are.

In The Running

SEBRINA and SWIFT LADY were slowish to begin, while ANYAAS jumped best and got the box seat. NAYELI and SUPARA worked across with MATILIJA, and they duelled setting a STRONG TEMPO, with PEEPING just in behind. The leaders started to tire early in the straight.

The Result

ANYAAS (2nd) moved up the inside as the leaders drifted off the rails, but she couldn't hold out SLIGHTLY SWEET (1st), who finished hard through the pack. SEBRINA (3rd) made late ground down the outside.

The Interest

The pace was on and the leaner, but very genuine, SLIGHTLY SWEET loved every bit of it. She's a tough filly suited to Royal Randwick. ANYAAS and SEBRINA are two horses to follow as they progress through the grades, and don't be too harsh on PEEPING, who hung on solidly at the end. SWIFT LADY proved she is no mug (held up to 200m) and could have almost been in the finish at 100/1! TAHNI DANCER was the most disappointing after getting the perfect run. Follow ANYAAS, SEBRINA and PEEPING. Forgive SWIFT LADY

Race 4 MOËT & CHANDON CHAMPAGNE STAKES

What a little ripper!

strong tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Pasadena Girl David & B Hayes & T Dabernig Hugh Bowman 4 54.5
2 Street Rapper Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott Blake Shinn 2 56.5
3 Tarquin Kelvin Bourke James McDonald 3 56.5

Pasadena Girl flew down the outside to win

In The Yard

STREET RAPPER, a long-striding type, was just a little keen in the yard. TARQUIN (robust and 1600m suits) looked well along with TAKEDOWN (bit, strong and risk at 1600m). PASADENA GIRL was smaller than the rest, but no knock on her.

In The Running

ODYSSEY MOON jumped well and settled near the pace, with STREET RAPPER moving up the inside to take the box seat. THE BARRISTER rolled to the lead from TAKEDOWN, stretching the field out at a STRONG TEMPO.

The Result

THE BARRISTER (5th) set up a good break, but couldn't hold off STREET RAPPER (2nd), who kept grinding to the line and PASADENA GIRL (1st), who swept home down the outside. TARQUIN (3rd) wound up steadily and RHODE ASSASIN (4th) finished hard from the back.

The Interest

A good honest speed meant the class rose to the top and PASADENA GIRL deserved the win. She was dynamic over the last furling, just a touch of the Lucia Valentina about her! STREET RAPPER is a genuine stayer that can race well as a 3yo. ODYSSEY MOON and TAKEDOWN are both good horses, they might have been found out over the testing mile though - drier tracks and shorter distances for them next preparation. Follow PASADENA GIRL.

Race 5 JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION PLATE

The mare outshines the boys

fair tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Gypsy Diamond Peter & Paul Snowden Sam Clipperton 11 54.0
2 Leebaz Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes Tommy Berry 3 58.5
3 Singing Flame Kevin Moses Brenton Avdulla 8 54.0

Gypsy Diamond picked up and sprinted best

In The Yard

LEEBAZ big-striding and one-paced, but he did look well. GYPSY DIAMOND strong and classy looking, she just needs to prove 2000m is OK. INDEX LINKED and MALICE both looking fine in the yard. SINGING FLAME a bit hot in the yard.

In The Running

GYPSY DIAMOND was slow to begin (2L). MALAVIO showed his natural speed over this distance to go forward. SINGING FLAME moved up on-pace, with WORLD WIDE working up out wider. The two of them took over mid-race after some steady early sectionals, ensuring a FAIR TEMPO overall. OUR VOODOO PRINCE was stuck wider and LEEBAZ got the box seat. The pressure really went on from the 650m.

The Result

LEEBAZ (2nd) wore down SINGING FLAME (3rd), but they couldn't hold off the finishing sprint from GYPSY DIAMOND (1st) late.

The Interest

GYPSY DIAMOND produced a strong win at her second try up to this distance range (ran ok as Spring 3yo). She looks like a sprinter/miler, but there is some stamina in her dams side. On just 54kg, this may simply have been the right race for her though - LEEBAZ was lumping 58.5kg out in the lead. OUR VOODOO PRINCE has a good sprint finish and wasn't suited wide with no cover in the testing conditions. Forgive OUR VOODOO PRINCE.

Race 6 SCHWEPPES ALL AGED STAKES

Moody's warrior goes out with a bang

steady tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Dissident Peter G Moody & Katherine Coleman Jim Cassidy 6 59.0
2 Wandjina Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott Damien Oliver 12 56.5
3 Chautauqua Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes Tommy Berry 1 59.0

Dissident kept lifting to get the better of Wandjina

In The Yard

Very classy horses in the yard, no knocks. SCISSOR KICK shone, but just a tiny bit hot. LASER HAWK perhaps not a sprinting type, longer and leggier than the rest.

In The Running

DISSIDENT and WANDJINA jumped well and took up the running, with SCISSOR KICK leaving the barriers nicely too (raced near the pace). They controlled a STEADY TEMPO for this class of race. GENERALIFE, WEARY and LASER HAWK got right back. CHAUTAUQUA was a bit keen midfield off the steady speed and over-raced slightly, pushing TERRAVISTA wider before the home turn. LUCKY HUSSLER was even wider with no cover.

The Result

DISSIDENT (1st) moved up to WANDJINA (2nd) and prevailed in a two-horse tussle. CHAUTAUQUA (3rd) loomed out wider and stuck on OK. GENERALIFE and LUCKY HUSSLER made good ground down the outside and traded positions after a Stewards' protest. TERRAVISTA stopped quickly after looming.

The Interest

Two tough horses got a couple of cheap sectionals in the middle and that was the end of the story. DISSIDENT ends his career on a high and WANDJINA proves he is a serious galloper. As for CHAUTAUQUA, he was ridden aggressively, got fired up and couldn't quite muster his magic finish this time. GENERALIFE and LUCKY HUSSLER were enormous! They keep getting better every campaign. REBEL DANE and SHOOTING TO WIN were awful - two horses that often lack the 'heart' in a tough finish. TERRAVISTA pulled up sore and might not be tested over 1400m again. Follow CHAUTAUQUA and GENERALIFE. Forgive LUCKY HUSSLER.

Race 7 TICKETEK HALL MARK STAKES

The 'Rockhampton Rocket' hits the big time

strong tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Our Boy Malachi Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes Tommy Berry 11 57.5
2 Craftiness Joseph Pride Blake Shinn 3 56.0
3 Hidden Warrior Gordon Yorke Jim Cassidy 5 56.0

Our Boy Malachi showed speed, strength and determination

In The Yard

ROCK STURDY a lovely type looking well, but needs 1400m. CHARLIE BOY also in good shape, along with OUR BOY MALACHI and CRAFTINESS, who shone in the yard. The veteran DECISION TIME wasn't 100% fit and WOULDN'T IT BE NICE was hot and unsettled.

In The Running

DECISION TIME and VASHKA were slowish. RAIN AFFAIR sped to the lead at a STRONG TEMPO, with OUR BOY MALACHI, CRAFTINESS and HIDDEN WARRIOR (three wide) all chasing.

The Result

OUR BOY MALACHI (1st) out-fought CRAFTINESS (2nd), after they both took over early in the straight. HIDDEN WARRIOR (3rd) stuck on really well, while and CHARLIE BOY (5th) and FAST'N'ROCKING (4th) ran on. ROCKY STURDY warmed up late into midfield.

The Interest

They called it a 'mini Stradbroke' and who would be surprised to see OUR BOY MALACHI and CRAFTINESS fighting out that Group One in few weeks time. They dominated a competitive field after racing on a strong pace - both horses with amazing strike rates. A few good returns, including HIDDEN WARRIOR and ROCK STURDY. The big Jo Pride brute ROCK STURDY is one to watch next start up in distance. VASHKA might have been in the wrong race first-up, lets hope he can bounce back after a testing run. Follow OUR BOY MALACHI, CRAFTINESS and ROCK STURDY. Forgive HIDDEN WARRIOR (wide).

Race 8 TAB REWARDS ROYAL RANDWICK 100

A tough little battler dives late

fair tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Rugged Cross Darren Weir Brenton Avdulla 14 55.0
2 Ecuador Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott Tye Angland 7 57.0
3 Medcaut John O'Shea & Tom Charlton James McDonald 10 54.0

Rugged Cross (white nose) chased hard and just got there

In The Yard

ECUADOR and STRAWBERRY BOY fit enough first-up for Waterhouse and Waller, the latter a big-striding type that might not be suited on the shifty track. RUGGED CROSS small and tough, TALES OF GRIMM lean, while MEDCAUT and MONTON are strapping types with good muscle.

In The Running

TALES OF GRIMM slow to being (again!) with SAN DIEGO. BURBERO and LUCK LAGO got back too. STRAWBERRY BOY rolled to the lead from ECUADOR and MEDCAUT out wider.

The Result

The on-pacers staged an epic battle with ECUADOR (2nd) coming out on top, until RUGGED CROSS (1st) dived through the pack late. MEDCAUT (3rd) stuck on bravely in a tight finish, with SAN DIEGO (4th), STRAWBERRY BOY (5th) and MONTON (6th) all close behind.

The Interest

Pure toughness and will-to-win made the difference as the resilient ECUADOR and super-genuine RUGGED CROSS were left standing at the end of a tough battle. MEDCAUT, STRAWBERRY BOY and SAN DIEGO might be the ones for the future though, all horses with the scope and strength for better grades. MONTON was way over the odds and ran well. BURBERO got held up slightly, but is ready for the paddock now (probably was before this race). LUCKY LAGO lost some ground on the turn and is ready for a mile next start. Follow STRAWBERRY BOY, SAN DIEGO and LUCKY LAGO Forgive MEDCAUT (wide).
