Race Day Review - Saturday Racing at Rosehill Gardens
Race Day: Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, 31 May 2014
Chris Waller brought a strong team to the track and his runners didn't disappoint, bagging five winners out of the eight races. An impressive performance from Sniper Fire kicked off the day in two year old event, before the beautiful filly Mamwaazel followed up thanks to a canny ride from Jason Collett in Race 2, beating the well-fancied Gai Waterhouse runner Sugar Rush into second.
There was a bit of luck thrown in though. Amovatio had everything made to order in Race 3 when second favourite Blackboard Special raced liked he had never been to the track before and the well backed Scatcat unfortunately injured herself. And in the last, Tromso didn't have to raise a sweat when leading them a merry dance.
Trainers David Pfieffer, John Thompson, and Tony Newing managed to squeeze in wins amongst the domination of the kiwi magician. Tony's runner, Timeless Prince (pictured above), showed great determination in an exciting finish to Race 5, fighting off gallopers much bigger than him to claim a much deserved Saturday win. Cradle Me (David Pfieffer) and Transonic (John Thompson) were both ridden to their strengths by experienced jockeys Christian Reith and Jimmy Cassidy.
A race-by-race analysis of the day is provided from the mounting yard to the finish. The complete guide from your team at the track.

Sniper Fire led from start to finish
In The Yard
The two year olds all looked in quite good shape before the first, with COUNTRY WARRIOR very relaxed. The only negative was for LOVED UP, who was unsettled. It was noted that DIGGLER had good strength and a bit more muscle bulk than the other two year olds.
In The Running
DIGGLER was best to jump, SNIPER FIRE moved up out wider to take the lead and set an honest EVEN TEMPO. He rolled along freely, perhaps just backing off the speed only very slightly mid-race. DIGGLER over-raced once he was passed and was in the box seat. COUNTRY WARRIOR sat up 2nd outside the lead. EXALTED WARRIOR didn't jump that well and ended up in 6th, further back than most speed maps had him.
The Result
SNIPER FIRE (1st) kicked on early in the straight and held them all at bay late, from BRAZEN MOSS (2nd), who worked home well from the back. CRAMANT (3rd) took some time to pick up, but finished well late to get a place. EXALTED WARRIOR (4th) hung around the turn and was ok to the line.
The Interest
The time was quite good for the two year olds and the fact that the horses that sat second and third in the run both disappointed suggests this was no walk in the park. It had been noted that Jimmy Cassidy gave SNIPER FIRE an easy time at his previous start, but this time they got the momentum building early and he showed that he is quite a nice horse. BRAZEN MOSS is able to maintain a strong run to the line, even if he is not the most dynamic, and he proved that again here. As mentioned before the race, CRAMANT has a few tricks and he once again seemed reluctant to push on initially before succumbing to the jockey over the last 100m. LOVED UP clearly has talent but she looks a moody filly and it wasn't her day today. Follow SNIPER FIRE. Forgive CRAMANT, LOVED UP and EXALTED WARRIOR (maybe over further?).

Mamwaazel got a cheap couple of furlongs then kicked away
In The Yard
A couple didn't parade well, including DEVIL MISS and FEATURE, looking less impressive than the rest. VOCALISE was very fizzy and sweated up. MAMWAAZEL, SUGAR RUSH, MISS TENPINS and TAIL RISK paraded best. There was no knock on ROMANTIC MOON.
In The Running
MAMWAAZEL rolled across to take the lead after 400m, then immediately came under restraint. She managed to back off the tempo for a couple of furlongs, before gradually rolling again, overall setting up an EVEN TEMPO. PAPILON ROUGE worked up to second and MISS TENPINS was just behind the leading pair after it was announced she would go forward. VOCALISE missed the start again and was well back.
The Result
MAMWAAZEL (1st) got the field rolling on the turn and then gave a kick in the straight once asked to win, from SUGAR RUSH (2nd), who worked home solidly. ROMANTIC MOON (3rd) ran on well from the back to just beat MISS TENPINS (4th) in a photo for third.
The Interest
ROMANTIC MOON put in a strong finish and she looks like a filly that will get more ground - one to watch under the care of the Cummings stable. Both MAMWAAZEL and SUGAR RUSH clearly ran well and are nice types of fillies that can be followed in the future. SUGAR RUSH has more scope to her frame so perhaps could get a longer distance also. PAPILLON ROUGE was disappointing and is not racing as well as last prep. TAIL RISK looked quite impressive in the yard and finished off strongly in the straight. She qualifies for lower grade races than this and could be placed to advantage in an upcoming event, while KIWI KATE might be better suited up in distance at her next assignment. VOCALISE was very unsettled and also lacks the acceleration to compete at this level. They will have to have a rethink with her and perhaps go for longer distances or lower grades. DEVIL MISS is very genuine and can be followed in a provincial event in the future with confidence. Follow MAMWAAZEL, SUGAR RUSH and ROMANTIC MOON.

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Amovatio | Chris Waller | Jim Cassidy | 8 | 56.0 | |
2 | Skarsgard | Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou | Paul Hammersley | 7 | 54.0 | |
3 | Scatcat | Brett Cavanough | Jake Duffy | 1 | 55.0 |
Amovatio finished too well over the last 200m
In The Yard
KUDERO wasn't the most impressive in the yard. KNIGHT TEMPLAR looked well, along with SCATCAT and BLACKBOARD SPECIAL. AMOVATIO was fit enough, while ISORICH looked a level below the rest.
In The Running
BLACKBOARD SPECIAL jumped well and went forward, but KUDERO pushed up underneath and was keen to hold the lead. The two of them streaked away and set a GOOD TEMPO, a few lengths away from the pack, which was headed by KNIGHT TEMPLAR.
The Result
BLACKBOARD SPECIAL took the lead at the top of the straight, but started to roll out badly under pressure. AMOVATIO (1st) built up into the race and finished it off strongly, from SKARSGARD (2nd) who kept on solidly. SCATCAT (3rd) started to run on near the inside before her run tapered off (lame near foreleg), but she still managed to get past a wayward BLACKBOARD SPECIAL (4th).
The Interest
It might be a simple race to analyse, with the best three horses AMOVATIO, SCATCAT and BLACKBOARD SPECIAL, but only one of them could put it together on the day. BLACKBOARD SPECIAL must now trial to stewards satisfaction before racing again and will now be spelled by the trainer. Back to the drawing board for what is clearly a talented, but very green, galloper. Jake Duffy 'missed the boat' with SCATCAT at the home turn when he didn't actively respond to Jimmy Cassidy's early move. She built up into the race before something was amiss the last 100m, and came back to scale visibly lame in the near foreleg. Forgive SCATCAT and BLACKBOARD SPECIAL (if he trials like a greyhound).

Cradle Me sprinted best in a slowly run race
In The Yard
MOUNT NEBO, EARNEST ERNEST, SIR BERUS and YOU'LL NEVER paraded well. CRADLE ME looked a bit unsettled in the yard. WILD AND PROUD didn't parade as well as some of the others. It was noted that SIR BERUS and YOU'LL NEVER looked more like 1400m types and MOUNT NEBO lacked the power of some of the other runners. EARNEST ERNEST was keen, but he usually is once the jockey goes on.
In The Running
MOUNT NEBO took up the lead and CRADLE ME sat up second. No pressure was applied and an expected SLOW TEMPO resulted. QFIGHTER was stuck three wide with no cover midfield, but that wasn't much of a disadvantage given the slow speed the race was run at. FAUSTUS and EARNEST ERNEST were a bit slow to jump and over-raced at the back of the field.
The Result
CRADLE ME (1st) quickened at the top of the straight and streaked away with it, from YOU'LL NEVER (2nd) who chased gamely. QFIGHTER (3rd) picked up well enough in the straight to just hold off EARNEST ERNEST (4th) late for a place.
The Interest
She had the right run, but credit still goes to the winner CRADLE ME. The Rosehill circuit suits her and she is racing in great heart. She was little unsettled before the race, but that may even of helped get her to jump quickly and take up a forward position. Christian Reith did a great job to get her to settle and then kick away in the straight. EARNEST ERNEST put in a good performance and is finishing his races well, despite being keen. YOU'LL NEVER ran well and seems to be crying out for 1400m, along with SIR BERUS, who just couldn't sprint with them. Probably the most interesting run was that of MOUNT NEBO, who seemed suited by the tempo, but his small frame and lack of power means his top speed wasn't enough to hold off the challengers. It was farcically run race that proves most horses have to follow their pattern. Even though there was no pace in the race, the other jockeys still had to ride their horses quietly and were almost helpless to impact the result. No follows or forgives.

Timeless Prince tried his little heart out
In The Yard
FROZEN ROPE, TIMELESS PRINCE and AKAMAS paraded best before the event. First-up horses OUR DESERT WARRIOR, MISS ZENELLA and LETCHWORTH didn't look like they were 100% fit and still carried condition. FLYING BAY was looking a little flat and lean before the event, while LONGSHOREMAN was just a tiny bit unsettled and had the pony with him in the yard.
In The Running
OUR DESERT WARRIOR worked across and set a rolling EVEN TEMPO. LETCHWORTH sat up outside the leader, while LONGSHOREMAN was stuck wide with no cover near the pace. MISS ZENELLA missed the start, before working into midfield on the rails. RUGGED CROSS, TIMELESS PRINCE and FROZEN ROPE settled at the back. FLYING BAY tried to start her run early and had a bumping duel with LONGSHOREMAN around the home turn.
The Result
TIMELESS PRINCE (1st) tried his heart out and ran on with FROZEN ROPE (2nd) from the back, past a brave LONGSHOREMAN (3rd), who kept on strongly. ADORABEEL (4th) was blocked for a run until the 250m mark, but he wasn't 100% genuine in her run to the line once she was out.
The Interest
What a little champion this galloper is. He is about half the size of the second horse and they both ran on solidly from the back, while RUGGED CROSS couldn't find a run to join in and was badly blocked. The best run was clearly LONGSHOREMAN though, who kept on strongly despite a wide run. It should be noted that he isn't the biggest of gallopers either and will probably need to step up in distance soon to get another win on the board (a middle-distance type). ADORABEEL is a nice type that will improve over time, especially when she lets down more genuinely over the last 100m. FLYING BAY was disappointing and it looks as though she could be near the end of her preparation. Follow LONGSHOREMAN. Forgive RUGGED CROSS.

The very genuine Transonic was just too strong
In The Yard
Most of the runners looked in good shape in the yard., apart from CASINO DANCER, who has been parading a bit poorly of late. It was noted that she is a very tough type though. JUST AS COSMIC looked a level below the rest, with less size and strength than most others.
In The Running
KEEP COOL pushed on and I'M IMPOSING worked up wide then sat outside the leader in 2nd. They both pushed on early in the race before backing it off slightly, setting up a START-STOP TEMPO overall. TRANSONC and KURTLEY both had nice runs behind the leading two, while SENTA DESERT settled out the back after being slowly away. TRANSONIC came out three wide at 600m and made an early move.
The Result
TRANSONIC (1st) moved up at the top of the straight and sustained a strong run to the line. CASINO DANCER (2nd) ran on down the outside late and FULL OF SPIRIT (3rd) put in a solid performance to keep on from near the pace.
The Interest
A total of 2.5 lengths between the top nine finishers suggest the form should be treated with some caution. A lot of horses were taken out of their comfort zone by the fluctuating tempo. I'M IMPOSING is a horse that performs best when fresh, and after looking very well first-up, there was a risk he may be near the end of his preparation. He did do some work early, but overall was disappointing. There were some excuses for KEEP COOL also, but perhaps not enough given the winner did as much work as he did. The petrol that was spent by the leaders early probably helped a mare like TRANSONIC, who is just about as tough and genuine as they come. Another 'tough type' ran home into second from the back, CASINO DANCER, who just keeps on turning up and performing every week. FULL OF SPIRIT did well at her first try at the trip, while IRONSTEIN, SENTA DESERT and IGGI POP finished off ok. SENTA DESERT might have been the one that was a little unlucky not to finish closer, the big galloper didn't get as much room as he would have liked. KURTLEY layed in on the rails every time he tried to warm up and could of been a little bit closer also. ROWIE just doesn't get this distance. Follow TRANSONIC and FULL OF SPIRIT.

Kristy Lee was too fast for the other mares
In The Yard
DREAM EMPRESS and KRISTY LEE both paraded well, the former looking a touch fitter, while KRISTY LEE had more strength in her build. POMPIDOU was a nice type, but looked a bit flat in the yard. EXPRESS POWER, LADY LA DOUCE and URGENT BELLS looked well.
In The Running
DREAM EXPRESS went to the lead from LADY LA DOUCHE. She steadily built up the speed, setting an EVEN TEMPO overall. HOLY DELUSIONS and BOUZY ROUGE settled at the back, with KRISTY LEE in midfield.
The Result
KRISTY LEE (1st) built up good speed in the straight and finished well, to beat HOLY DELUSIONS (2nd), who sprinted nicely from the back. DREAM EMPRESS (3rd) kept on from the lead to hold on for a place.
The Interest
KIRSTY LEE did it quite easily in the end. She is a powerful type of mare that has a good finish when she is saved up in the run. Rosehill seems to suit her style, given she can often get off balance. HOLY DELUSIONS put in a strong run also, powering from the back, and has the armoury to pick up a win over the winter months. DREAM EMPRESS probably had her chance and maybe found the long Rosehill straight too long to sustain high speed. The interesting run came from EXPRESS POWER after she paraded well and didn't get the clearest of runs down the straight. One to watch this campaign. Follow KIRSTY LEE, HOLY DELUSIONS and EXPRESS POWER (over a touch further).

1 | Tromso | Chris Waller | Joshua Parr | 15 | 58.0 | |
2 | Honorius | Darren Weir | Ms Winona Costin | 4 | 59.5 | |

Tromso controlled the race and kicked away... again
In The Yard
HONORIUS carried some condition in the yard and it was noted that DARCI BE GOOD didn't have the power of some of the others. Most horses looked well, with BAGMAN and QUEENSTOWN looking fit enough first-up.
In The Running
TROMSO jumped quickly to take the lead and controlled a SLOW TEMPO. QUEENSTOWN came across and found a spot outside the leader quite easily. COUP AY TEE was a bit slow to jump and went back with HOYLONNY to the tail of the field. MIGHTY LUCKY over-raced wide with no cover in midfield. The sprint went on around the home turn.
The Result
TROMSO (1st) kicked nicely into the straight and kept going to the line, from HONORIUS (2nd), who followed the leader through and maintained his speed. QUEENSTOWN (3rd) kept on ok for a place.
The Interest
A professional performance from what must be said is a very lucky galloper. TROMSO has now led up a SLOW TEMPO at his last four runs (18th Jan, 1st Feb and 10th May). He has still had the acceleration for two wins and a second during that period (the other run was in a higher grade), but he is creeping up in the weights and the run of luck must surely end soon. HONORIUS was solid first-up given he carried condition and had a slightly checked passage in straight. The favourites looked disappointing on paper, but QUEENSTOWN wasn't suited by the sprint home and HAUSSMAN might be more effective on a slightly wet track (definitely not in a race with a 34.28 sectional anyway). QUEENSTOWN is such a genuine mare and so looked well in the yard that you can't go too wrong if you follow her. FULGUR was perhaps the interesting run in the race, squeezing through late to hit the line after a good run in transit. COUP AY TEE ran on from an impossible position at the turn and MIGHTY LUCKY was brave enough after over-racing and being stuck wide as they sprinted. Follow QUEENSTOWN, FULGUR Forgive COUP AY TEE and MIGHTY LUCKY.
