Yard to the Post @ Royal Randwick

Race Day: Royal Randwick on Saturday, 06 June 2015

After some overnight rain to ensure a genuine SOFT track, the sun shone at 'headquarters' for the June Stakes meeting.

It wasn't the highest quality race of the day, but the two mile Stayers Cup provided the most excitement on track. Provincial galloper LOVETHEBEACHES (picture) strode more than 20 lengths clear of the chasing pack mid-race and was never headed. Jockey Paul King making the bold winning move just a couple of furlongs into the race.

The feature Listed June Stakes was taken out by tough Randwick specialist WOULDN'T IT BE NICE, who relished the chopped up track and strong pace set by speedy grey ZARATONE. French jockey Thomas Huet found the best ground nearer the rails on a biased Winter track.

That NEAR-RAILS bias resulted in more than a few 'forgive' runs, horses such as TARGET IN SIGHT unable to make the ground needed out wider.

A race-by-race preview from the yard to the post, will be online Sunday at 9am.

Race 1 AUSTRALIAN JEWELLERY LIQUIDATORS PLATE

Ryan and Avdulla sink a short-priced fav'

steady tempo
Bias: on-rails

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Spill the Beans Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou Brenton Avdulla 1 56.0
2 Yaboroo Joseph Pride Jason Collett 2 56.0
3 Holler John O'Shea & Tom Charlton Sam Clipperton 3 56.0

Spill The Beans held Yaboroo and Holler at bay

In The Yard

COYS and SPILL THE BEANS relaxed types, both calm in the yard. HOLLER the most powerful in the field.

In The Running

REMUNERATOR worked forward and stayed off the rails, setting a STEADY TEMPO from SPILL THE BEANS on the inside, who kicked up to join in. HOLLER took a trail early before coming wider and YABOROO railed up in behind. COYS was stuck wide throughout and hung badly in the straight.

The Result

SPILL THE BEANS (1st) lifted on the line to get the better of YABOROO (2nd), who fought on along the rails. HOLLER (3rd) peaked on his run in a close finish.

The Interest

SPILL THE BEANS won his Maiden impressively against holder horses and showed he is a talented horse. Avdulla kept his rhythm nicely and pushed the 'button' at the right time. The fav' HOLLER had a couple of excuses, coming wider proved to be the wrong move with the NEAR-RAILS BIAS and there will be more fitness to come - his run just peaked late. We've learnt YABOROO is a very tough type, fighting hard under riding in both his starts. KIMBERLEY STAR was solid and it was too bad to be true from COYS. Follow SPILL THE BEANS and HOLLER.

Race 2 DECORATIVE EVENTS & EXHIBITIONS HANDICAP

Waterhouse's big 'tank' dominates

steady tempo
Bias: on-rails

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Eisenhower Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott Joshua Parr 2 57.5
2 Avonaco Chris Waller Jason Collett 4 56.0
3 Disgraceful Dale Riley Sam Clipperton 8 55.0

Eisenhower got a cheap lead and gave a big kick

In The Yard

DUIBIO a robust type, looking OK up from Melbourne. EISENHOWER and FINAL DECISION a little on toes in yard. LIBERTY ISLAND looking well.

In The Running

EISENHOWER jumped straight to front and set a STEADY TEMPO. DISGRACEFUL worked forward to sit outside the leader. AVONACO and DUIBIO were in behind with LIBERTY ISLAND at the back.

The Result

EISENHOWER (1st) kicked and showed fight to hold off AVONACO (2nd), who made ground to grab DISGRACEFUL (3rd) near the line.

The Interest

EISENHOWER is a big strong boy and he controlled a STEADY TEMPO here. He's a galloper that shows fight when challenged, building a good winning record. It seems he wins or fails dismally! AVONACO and DISGRACEFUL crossed the line together as they did at Scone, the latter having every chance after racing on the pace with the winner. FINAL DECISION found better ground along the inside, unlike LIBERTY ISLAND, who had to make his run out wider in the worst ground. Forgive LIBERTY ISLAND.

Race 3 RANDWICK CITY COUNCIL HANDICAP

A Royal Blue Hurricane hits the bookies hard

fair tempo
Bias: on-rails

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Magic Hurricane John O'Shea & Tom Charlton Brodie Loy 3 54.0
2 Pajaro Peter & Paul Snowden Thomas Huet 5 54.0
3 Amovatio Chris Waller Joshua Parr 1 59.0

Import galloper Magic Hurricane was too strong on the line

In The Yard

AMOVATIO fit and well third-up from a spell. MAGIC HURRICANE a solid type that seemed fit enough to perform. PAJARO a tough well-defined type. MY SABEEL and KAYPERS plain-looking.

In The Running

MY SABEEL went forward to set a FAIR TEMPO after being trapped wide, while PAJARO moved up to sit outside lead. MAGIC HURRICANE and FINE BUBBLES took the trail.

The Result

PAJARO (2nd) took over and set off for home, but MAGIC HURRICANE (1st) finished best along rail late. AMOVATIO (3rd) quickened into the race along the inside.

The Interest

MAGIC HURRICANE attracted late support at his first Australian start and finished off strongly with the very light weight. He is a progressive, tough import with plenty of scope to get out to a staying trip. PYTHAGOREAN didn’t go forward, which put a few of the jockeys in limbo with tactics. MY SABEEL ended up setting a FAIR TEMPO after having to work forward. PAJARO put in a bold effort in favourable tough conditions and AMOVATIO did well enough with the big weight. There was a gap back to the pack. Follow MAGIC HURRICANE (over further).

Race 4 COURTENAY HOUSE HANDICAP

The Kiwis relish a muddy Randwick

fair tempo
Bias: on-rails

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Sir Mako Chris Waller Rory Hutchings 7 59.0
2 Word of Mouth Leon & Troy Corstens Taylor Marshall 1 56.0
3 Banksters Bonus Timothy Grace Brodie Loy 3 57.0

Sir Mako beat home the unlucky Word of Mouth

In The Yard

SIR MAKO and BANKSTERS BONUS fit and well, both efficient types. LUCKY LIAISON very relaxed. Others all OK in he small field.

In The Running

LUCKY LIAISON led out from THURSTON at a FAIR TEMPO. TOO HIGH TEK and BANKSTERS BONUS settled well in behind.

The Result

SIR MAKO (1st) drove through along the rail from last to beat the luckless WORD OF MOUTH (2nd), who finished off late. BANKSTERS BONUS (3rd) loomed, but couldn't match them.

The Interest

Mid-Winter racing got cosmopolitan for this lowly BM 78. A Kiwi horse, jockey and trainer proved too good for the Melbourne raider and Hong Kong import. SIR MAKO had been racing in Group class in New Zealand before a freshen-up and transfer to the Waller stable. He arrived in good order and was aided by a smart ride from Rory Hutchings, finding the better ground up the inside. WORD OF MOUTH was the hard luck story of the race, checked and losing momentum when going for a run at the 250m. He picked up late and ran home well to the line. BANKSTERS BONUS peeled out from the 600m and ranged up three-wide before grinding away late. LOOPHOLE was always wide and chasing, he's a one-paced type that finds it very hard to win. Follow SIR MAKO. Forgive WORD OF MOUTH.

Race 5 SYDNEY AIRPORT STAYERS CUP

Paul King leaves them high and dry

fair tempo
Bias: on-rails

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Lovethebeaches Steve Hodge Paul King 9 54.0
2 Our Voodoo Prince Darren Weir Joshua Parr 2 59.0
3 Husson Choice David Vandyke Jason Collett 1 54.0

Lovethebeaches set up a massive lead and was never headed

In The Yard

OUR VOODOO PRINCE and HUSSON CHOICE had a bit more muscle in their frame than others. PLANET PURPLE long and lean. SINDARIYA sweated up in the yard.

In The Running

LOVETHEBEACHES led out from ENDAXI who did the chasing with TURF SPEEDIE in behind. A FAIR TEMPO set up by the pack, but LOVETHEBEACHES strode clear from the rest, setting up an amazing 20 length lead mid-race! PLANET PURPLE over-raced early on.

The Result

LOVETHEBEACHES (1st) kept rolling and won by 5 lengths in the end. OUR VOODOO PRINCE ran on (2nd) with HUSSON CHOICE (3rd). PLANET PURPLE (4th) kept grinding away

The Interest

What were the jockeys doing here? Kerry Parker's stable runners (PLANET PURPLE and ENDAXI) had the job of taking the pack up to the tearaway, but Costin and Clipperton missed the boat completely. They were left high and dry as LOVETHEBEACHES strode clear to a big win... Paul King, take a bow! He got the best out of the grinding mudlark from Newcastle. OUR VOODOO PRINCE, HUSSON CHOICE, PLANET PURPLE and JO JO GIRL were all in a clump well behind. No Follows or Forgives.

Race 6 POWHF TOMMY RAUDONIKIS OAM JUNE STAKES

A nice ride sinks a brave mare

strong tempo
Bias: on-rails

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Wouldnt It Be Nice Paul Perry Thomas Huet 3 54.0
2 Avoid Lightning Les Bridge Joshua Parr 2 60.0
3 Zaratone Bjorn Baker Ms Kathy O'Hara 11 57.5

Wouldn't It Be Nice followed Avoid Lightning and pounced late

In The Yard

WOUDN"T IT BE NICE a strong athletic sprinter suited to the conditions. TARGET IN SIGHT a powerful type. OAKFIELD COMMANDS less power than most of the other sprinters. Most looking well.

In The Running

ZARATONE jumped and ran along at a STRONG TEMPO with HOLDER SUNSET putting some early pressure on. HURRARA and BARBED were next in the run, a couple of lengths behind.

The Result

WOULDN’T IT BE NICE (1st) saved ground along the rail and ran over the top of AVOID LIGHTNING (2nd), who had loomed up the inside. ZARATONE (3rd) held on for a place from TARGET IN SIGHT (4th), who made ground out wider.

The Interest

More winners up the inside lane... WOULDN’T IT BE NICE relished the conditions and beat the much classier AVOID LIGHTNING thanks to a big weight difference. Thomas Huet was patient at the back and followed the runner-up through before chasing her down. They put a gap on ZARATONE. TARGET IN SIGHT rattled home wide out, which just wasn't the place to be. Follow AVOID LIGHTNING. Forgive TARGET IN SIGHT.

Race 7 MARK MORAN HANDICAP

A breakthrough win for a talented mare

fair tempo
Bias: on-rails

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Private Secretary Gregory Hickman Ms Winona Costin 10 58.5
2 Idance Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes Brenton Avdulla 3 57.0
3 Alias Daniel Bowman Jay Ford 5 58.5

Private Secretary grabbed Idance right near the line

In The Yard

PRIVATE SECRETARY the most powerful sprinter in the field, a classy mare. IDANCE well, with a more athletic frame (further better?). FORGET looked relaxed, as did IMPULSIVE SPIRIT.

In The Running

IDANCE led ALIAS at a FAIR TEMPO with FAUSTUS and ALPHA BEAT taking the trail. FORGET was caught wide without cover. BLACK REVOLVER showed no early speed.

The Result

IDANCE (2nd) shook off the other on-pace gallopers, but PRIVATE SECRETARY (1st) got going late along the fence to score an impressive win. ALIAS (3rd) just held a place.

The Interest

Costin had put in a couple of questionable rides today, but she turned it around on PRIVATE SECRETARY. She found the inside ground and let the mare produce her powerful finishing burst - a talented sprinter that deserved a Saturday win, she's now won 7 of her 12 races. IDANCE is a super-genuine horse that races on the pace and gives his all, he looked the winner right until the closing stages. A mixed group of runs from the rest. FAIR CALL worked to the line OK and FORGET battled on after a wide run. The unreliable IMPULSIVE SPIRIT was well-backed and did nothing... he tends to do that. Don't be too harsh on BLACK REVOLVER, the conditions couldn't have been any worse for him. Follow PRIVATE SECRETARY. Forgive FORGET.

Race 8 EASTERN HEART CLINIC HANDICAP

Brodie's bold tactics win the last

strong tempo
Bias: on-rails

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Transfers John O'Shea & Tom Charlton Brodie Loy 5 54.0
2 Song And Laughter Richard Litt Danny Beasley 8 54.0
3 I'm in the Money Jeff Englebrecht Ms Linda Meech 7 55.5

Transfers led from start to finish

In The Yard

SENSE AND REASON and ALL CERISE athletic types. ELECTRIC POWER strong and muscular. BERRIMILLA relaxed and looking well in the yard, as she did first-up.

In The Running

TRANSFERS was pushed out to lead from I’M IN THE MONEY, who had jumped well, and they strung the field out at a STRONG TEMPO. RARE FRAGRANCE and SONG AND LAUGHTER had the trail a couple of lengths behind them with ALL CERISE who tracked up a touch wider.

The Result

TRANSFERS (1st) maintained her strong run and held off SONG AND LAUGHTER (2nd), who challenged late. I’M IN THE MONEY (3rd) fought on bravely. SENSE AND REASON and BERRIMILLA ran on late.

The Interest

Aggressive tactics on the winner broke the field up and made this mares race a proper contest. The NEAR-RAILS bias and low weight helped TRANSFERS get the prize, a mare that can maintain her run right to the line. SONG AND LAUGHTER ran well again and I’M IN THE MONEY raced to her strengths, a tough on-pace mare that had been out of form. SENSE AND REASON seemed to map perfectly before the race, but Collett took her back and then hooked wider - a poor effort from the young Kiwi jockey. BERRIMILLA did well and the form through SONG AND LAUGHTED stacked up. ALL CERISE put in an odd run, it didn't seem like she handled the track when let down. Forgive SENSE AND REASON.
